I will be moving to Manhattan this coming June to start my medical residency at NYU. I am hoping to secure a junior one-bedroom somewhere on the east side since my NYU housing will take at least a year to go through. Laundry facilities and elevator are musts. Doorman optional. If anyone has any info on solid leads for available apartments, please respond. By solid leads I mean, "I have a cousin moving out of his junior one-bedroom on 60th and 2nd... great space with fantastic sushi bar across the street... a block away from D'Agostino's and an affordable gym." Others would be, "I used this broker and she got me a one-bedroom with cathedral high ceilings, exposed brick, and a fireplace just blocks away from the park for next to nothing." I know that I may be setting my standards too high, but it can't hurt to dream. I have already made plans to live with someone so no roomies needed. Thanks in advance.

So to all the boys AHS batch '93 living in NY or NJ, I will be seeing y'all soon.

Congrats are in order I guess, Hoya Doc. A few years back, I looked at 1 'beds around 1st and York ave. You might find some apts of interest there since you'll need to stay near NYU med (btw, my godson was born there two years ago). It's pretty residential, lots of restaurants and watering holes. A gym is always around the block within the city.

Looking forward to catching up on a few of the lost golden hours on the East Side. Regards to the boyz back in Manila.

JG1,

Any new leads regarding apartments in the city? I have been informed that due to the events of 9/11 and the Iraq war, more and more people are moving away from Manhattan, and so resultingly has led to an more flexible real estate market. Is it true that landlords are now offering first month's rent for free? Sure they are... and they are also giving away free green cards to all newcomers in Ellis Island.

I'd appreciate any news. I will be heading up there in a week or so before graduation to finally look for a place. By the way, doing anything the weekend of May 18th?

Later.

Hoyadoc,

I think only for the few months after 9-11, net departures status was true. The marketplace replaced departures rather quickly with people who have wanted to live in the city for a long time attracted by (temprarily) lower rates. The rental market may have softened up a bit, but not by much at all. I've heard of free 1st and 2nd months, but that's about it. Maybe landlords might be more open to negotiate deals.

I wasn't sure what your timing and preferences were so I haven't really checked. I'll get back to you if I hear something.

Actually, i was going to ask you what your plans were. We might actually be in DC that weekend. Like you, my older bro is finishing up at GU and might walk on the 18th as well.

We were able to get 3 months off our lease agreement in our building: We love the location since it's only three avenue blocks away from where my wife works, but not sure if it's right for you. New building, fantastic amenities, right by Port Authority and very near Times Square so subway trains and buses are easily accessible.

Check out our building at The Victory at 41st and 10th

Any similarities to my username here in Atenista.net and in PeX are purely coincidental! smile.gif

We are loving every minute of our stay here in New York City!

If you're still looking, try Normandy Court at 95th st: excellent amenities (doorman, security, ensuite laundry in some units, central air/heat, not a hint of ghetoness, lots of hot professional chicks, upscale but reasonable;VERY CLOSE to the trains 4,5,6; restaurants galore; few blocks away from Central Park, short walk to a Catholic Church or one-stop train ride to St. Ignatius Loyola Church (86th and Park)if you're in the mood for the typical liberal jesuit sermon; one-stop train ride to Spanish Harlem (98 to 125th st)if you want to get hispanic feel (and if you're brave enough)

Thanks for the info. I will be heading up to the city in week and may look into some of these properties. Just keep in mind that though I may be moving to New York with MD in hand, I'm not exactly throwing away MD type cash just of yet (or will I ever considering I'm planning on a career in academic medicine).

Looking forward to bumping into familiar faces up there.
