Thanks for welcoming me at Atenista.net...
Last Sunday was the 1st time i've witnessed a UAAP game live at the bigdome... Happy to say that it was worth the travel... For one, i've always been an ateneo fan... two, i have a "kababayan" who's an ilonggo and a true blooded atenean (from Ateneo de Iloilo) in the person of Emman the "mighty mouse" monfort as you now call him... and even Ajeet "magic" Singh of NU is also a native from iloilo... He even had a brief stint at Ateneo de Iloilo in his early high school years before graduating at St. Joseph School Iloilo City...
Not biased or anything, but i can safely say that these two guys are doing well for their respective teams the past two games... NU lost to UST though...
For now, hoped that the blue eagles can carry their momentum going into sunday's game vs UST... they're one of the darkhorse's in season72...
But something has to be done with that starting unit... For two games, offense had been a major suspect at the start, and that carries the defense along with it... Adjustments will have to be made... What do you think Coach?

I think some questions were answered in this game against UST... Ateneo started off pretty well and the bench was superb... 50 pts! Result: 93-77 rout... ADMU 3-0...smile.gif
Mighty Mouse Monfort career best 20pts... 6 of 9 treys, 5boards and 2 asst... not bad huh for the littlest guy on the court? except for 2 TOs and a technical foul, almost a perfect game... there is only one weakness in his game though... how to break pressure defenses of opponents... as you can see, he was pulled out halfway thru the 4th qtr by Jai when UST started their full court press... he had a turnover then... hopefully he can adjust in time before the widely anticipated game against archrival lasalle on aug. 9... DLSU is known for their vaunted full court pressure defense...
As for Jai, I know you're the leader of this team and will step up everytime your team needs you... That's why you finish games...
And to the rest of the guys... CONSISTENCY... one or two games will be testy...
Congratulations Blue Eagles... 11 more games to go... take it 1 game at a time... So far the coaching staff has done a great job...

It’s not always a Rabeh Al-Hussaini show for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

With the opposition’s defense locked on its chief gunner, Ateneo scoured on its deep bench for reinforcement and found a virtual “unknown” itching to bare his arsenal after a one-year hiatus.

As it turned out, a slow-reacting UST defense fixated on Al-Hussaini gave Eman Monfort his moment and the comebacking Ateneo guard returned the favor -- to the Tigers' surprise.

Pruned in Ateneo’s second team last season, Monfort underscored his UAAP return with aplomb as he exploded for a career-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc to help the Blue Eagles fashion a 93-77 annihilation of the UST Growling Tigers and remain undefeated in the Season 72 cage wars yesterday at the Philsports Arena.

The victory propelled Ateneo to the top of the standings with a 3-0 win-loss record. The Tigers meanwhile fell to 2-1 and shared the second spot with UE which earlier disposed of NU, 73-59, in the first game.

“I’m happy that he’s (Monfort) a part of the team again. We actually asked him to play in Team B to hone his pointguard skills and he did a pretty good job there,” Black said of the 20-year old former Ateneo de Iloilo high school standout who also logged in five rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes of action.

“Nobody respects his shooting because nobody knows him. He’s always been able to shoot.”

Monfort backstopped Black's words as he flaunted his shooting proficiency from afar, nailing three triples in a dizzying 15-5 second-quarter attack that provided Ateneo a sizeable 52-35 halftime advantage and enough offensive leverage to parry the Tigers’ comeback attempts in the second half.

The Tigers opened the third frame with a 9-5 run sparked by a Dylan Ababou triple to cut the deficit, 44-57, with 5:40 left. But Monfort’s fourth three-pointer triggered an 11-5 run to erect a 68-49 Ateneo buffer that kept the Tigers at bay going into the payoff period.

A Juami Tiongson triple eight minutes into the fourth quarter catapulted Ateneo to its biggest lead, 74-51.

UST unleashed a 15-6 countersalvo, highlighted by a Khasim Mirza dunk, to inch closer at 80-64 with four minutes remaining in the game.

But an Eric Salamat trey and an Al-Hussaini freethrow restored the lead back to 20, 84-64 with 3:11 left and the Tigers never seriously threatened from there on.

Unlike in their last two games when they started out flat, the Blue Eagles zoomed to an early 30-18 lead with Ryan Buenafe and Al-Hussaini each pouring nine of their 14 and 13-point outputs in the first quarter alone.

Asked of Ateneo’s good start, Black said: “I just challenged them to get into a better start. We did a good job moving the basketball today. We got a chance to run against UST because while they can score a lot of points, we know they can also give up a lot of points.”

Ateneo posted a 55-34 edge over UST in bench scoring even as the Tigers dominated the second-chance points department, 18-2.

Eric Salamat also chipped in 14 markers for Ateneo.

Allein Maliksi led UST with 20 points on 4-of-5 shooting from rainbow country while Ababou, who was shut down in the second quarter, and Mirza added 17 and 13 points, respectively.

The scores:

Just got back from Manila through an early morning flight... wheeww... TIRING!

Phil. Airlines Econolight fares, COMPLIMENTARY game tickets at Araneta and a 50% discount on accomodation at Katipunan (courtesy of a friend) made it possible for me and my companions to watch yesterday's ATENEO/LASALLE game live at the BIGDOME for the first time... Another cherished experience...

I flew from iloilo to manila saturday with six others including Mrs. Nemia Nicolau Monfort ("NENENG" as everyone calls her), the ever loving and supportive mother of Blue Eagle Emman Monfort... We visited her son at Ateneo and we were able to watch part of the BLUE EAGLES practice at MORO LORENZO SPORTS CENTER... My FIVE other companions, four student athletes and a coach, had a brief pictorial with some players thereafter... "enjoy na enjoy sila" with the experience...

The blue eagles were on a positive note... knowing that this year, they can always beat lasalle on any given day...

True enough, they did... but they needed an extra period to shake off one tough customer... Storming back from a ten-point third quarter deficit and leading by four with 23.2secs left in regulation, rookie Bringas hit a trey from top of the key to bring dlsu within one... after 2 made foul shots by ryan buenafe, lasalle had one last chance at overtime... After dribbling the ball and using most of the clock, Hyram Bagatsing eventually tied the game with his own version of a three with 0.8 of a sec to go... Eric Salamat, who was brilliant the whole game, had his moment of blunder when he threw an ill-advised long court pass that hit the green and yellow crowd behind the ateneo bench... leaving the archers one last crack at the basket and maybe steal one from ateneo... fortunately, Bringas missed a desperation attempt at the buzzer when he recovered the looseball after the inbound pass hit the side of the backboard... Overtime... Nonoy Baclao, an able replacement for the injured Rabel Al-Hussaini and the man responsible of handcuffing Joshua Webb in the 4th qtr & OT, scored the first four points... then... everything was history... Final score... 76-72 in favor of Ateneo...

Another CLASSIC battle between two archrivals...

Again... it was worth the travel... especially when you're watching the game from behind the bench of ateneo...smile.gif

see you in the FINALS!
