Two US Senators went on TV describing their push for a US Iraq withrawal in 4 to 6 months, full story here

What would an Iraq withrawal mean for the Philippines ph34r.gif ?

One thing that comes to mind are the lives of Filipino and Filipino American soldiers deployed in Iraq. A withrawal can be a detriment to world security since the "mess" that was started has become a petri dish for terrorism.

A U.S. Iraq withrawal is a very intense situation were choices on the table are all bad for the short and long term.

How would you characterize this situation?

As much as the nexus and specter of Islamo-Fascism is quite universal in scope, a United States withdrawal won't have a further detrimental impact on the Philippines. The republic is already embroiled in its problem of terrorism by its proximity to Indonesia and systemic neglect/apathy/animosity towards its muslim population. In other words, we have enough in our hands to last generations of conflict. In the meantime, a partition of Iraq is a more viable option. Since the Sunnis and Shiites are quite enamored at blowing up each other, separate the two parties and establish separate states for these jammocks. The Kurds, who incidentally tow the American line, will be more than happy to secede and create its own independent state (w/c for all intents and purposes are already enjoying the fruits of the Sadaam fall). They are the only prosperous and peaceful faction in Iraq.
As much as I'm a Republican and as much as the two democrats sounded like the Nixonian "peace with honor" during the Vietnam War, withdrawal is a great option this time. The reality is, the "war against terrorism" aspect of the Iraqi effort has been blurred by the reality of a civil war between the sunnis and the shiites which the Bush administration has flatly denied for the longest. The U.S. has been acting as a referee between these two idiotic factions instead of focusing its effort of routing out Al Qaeda in Iraq. Besides, the Iraqi effort should have never been a full-scale military action. It should have been a mere surgical Sadaam decaptitation effort by co-opting the generals who were already critical of Sadaam. The simple assasination/overthrow of Sadaam would have kept the Iraqi Army intact and made stabilization easier. But that's 20/20 hindsight quarterbacking.
There is no doubt that the withdrawal will just make things worse at least for the Sunnis and Shiites. Iraq, not including its Kurdish region, will become, no doubt, an even more potent breeding ground for terrorists after a U.S. withdrawal. The future is dismal and the prognosis is grim, but the essential first solution depends on a genuine sunni-shiite dialogue to end the factional strife. And if a clear understanding between the two takes root, then the talk about fighting terrorism may become possible. However, Iran also has its own hegemonic agenda. And since it considers the Shiite majority of Iraq its extension of its mideast sphere of influence, the hope for peace among factions has just become a more nebulous proposition.
The bottomline is, the U.S. should stop all this neoconservative agenda of "spreading democracy" in the world and should stop behaving like an Empire. One size doesn't fit all...and democracy is not for every mohammed el-kaboom. Besides, all these fratricidal wars are just evidence of natural selection at its finest. Let nature run its course.
