a number of employees from my company were recently laid off by management.. operational redundancy - that's the new management term i learned last week. i'm glad i still have work, but what about those who got fired? and how do you reassure yourself you won't be the next?

are you working here in the US or in PI? operational redundancy...cute term huh? does it mean a certain number of workers do or proximately do the same set of tasks? you know, i've been "restructured" before that's why i work for the US gov't now to avoid the unnecessary stress of unemployment lines. but to answer your question -- i guess one has to broaden one's skills (even for an atenean). in your case, you should have a plan B -- self-employment or at least a some enterpreneurial acumen. if you're in PI, gov't can't be a choice because of its sorry state and atrociously low compensation.

I can't reassure myself that I won't be the next. I only hope that if my position is declared redundant (I doubt as of now, but not when I was still working for a newly-merged bank), they at least pay me more than the 100% of your monthly salary multiplied by the years of service... naka 8-years na din ako dun ah..

Now I'm starting fresh but things are quite different, in a sense... my job deals with hirings and terminations and such... among others...

I recently got retrenched from the production company I used to work for. It felt awful ofcourse, but now I'm freelancing and the pay is really good. I don't have to work 14 to 18 hours a day pa. "When God closes a door, he opens a window..."

it's always a good idea to go back to school when you get laid off

honestly, i don't know how to react. but i'd probably teach math in high school/college. luckily (or unluckily, i really don't know how to say it) my company lays off employees from top positions before going down to us (consultant levels). magsisimula na lang akong kabahan kapag yung team leader ko na nasipa!!!

Speaking about lay offs have you guys heard about the ENRON issue? Those people who invested stocks and already retired are in some really deep sh!t. They had from 700K to 1.3M dollars worth of stock and ready to be cashed in when ENRON's stock values hit close to zero just like that! not to mention the top officials were actually cashing in before the company crashed.

mods,

It might be a good idea to move this thread to the "current events" forum.
