Man, this summer heat sure blows.
Next to spending time in the pool or the beach, i need some cool sounds to take the heat off.
Any of you think reggae makes for great summer soundtracks?

UB40's Labour Love is to my mind, one of the best reggae albums ever. While made up completely of remakes, the UBs truly made tese classics their own as well accessible to a new generation of reggae fans. And Doctor X's liner notes are tres cool.
Sublime's not bad. But i sorta like their current incarnation as the Long Beach Dub All Stars.
Anyone got Brownman Revival's Coming Soon? Bitin ha. While Vince Chacon appears on the album as a guest performer, I really miss his presence in the band. Anyone know why he left?

back in high school, i was asked by a friend from CSA to spin for a party of theirs. and i did.
at some point during the party, when things were winding down, i began to play some reggae and ska stuff. the hypnotic rhythms soon got people back on the floor. this girl then went up to the DJ's booth and said, "That Mexican music's great. Its just like the samba."
well ... if the shoe fits

the Police weren't exactly a reggae band, but i loved the Jamaican rhythm's impact on the band's music. Anyone got those reggae tribute albums to the Police, Regatta Mondatta? They released two volumes of that and if there is any tribute album you should get then make that Regatta Mondatta.
I love Musical Youth along with Burning Spear. Musical Youth may sound like a novelty (think a young Jackson 5 playing reggae) but they were cool.

If you like reggae, you have to watch Indio I, a Reggae band which released an album during the mid-90's. Keyboardist Enrique de dios is back from London, and they've added Ian Umali, original P.O.T. guitarist, to their line-up.
They play every Saturday at Xaymaca, a hip reggae joint along Timog, playing songs from reggae acts previously mentioned in this post (Amber, Santeria, Jamming, etc...), reggaed up songs (Hey Jude, etc.) as well as a set of excellent originals(Diwata, S on m Chest, 'Di Mo Lang Alam).
If you're a reggae fan, you absolutely must see them.
Cheers!

I saw Indio I a long time ago at Club Dredd. They did have quite a crowd (mostly Ateneans) that would faithfully watch them. In fact, Vince Hizon (who was a pal of Vic Facultad) was a frequent attendee when they would play.
Their song "Mikey Mikey" would get the crowd dancing but the band wasn't too fond of performing it (it didn't even make the album).
When I got their CD later on, I was somewhat disappointed because it didn't even begin to translate the energy that Indio I brought to their gigs. It sounded rather flat and uninspired.
Maybe they've gotten better. I will check them out as advised.

With the constant increase in prices, it's kinda difficult to shell out hard-earned cash for one's hobbies. in my case, CDs. nowadays, the disc has to be really good for me to purchase it.
in america, it has been acknowledged that the freebies such as the free DVDs, bonus videos and other features, or enhanced discs haven't done much to boost sales. the supposed slashing of the $20 price tag never materialized. here, i wonder too if it's wise that they initially release a single disc only to have a deluxe edition come out that features a video or live track or two. so you wonder if it's worth buying a CD upon its initial release. they've done this with john mayer, incubus, system of a down and (God help us) avril lavigne.
but after picking up metallica's st. anger, i saw this gem of a disc at music one greenbelt 3. bob marley's exodus. the deluxe edition. for P450 smackeroos, you get two discs. disc one contains the original ten tracks with an additional 5 tracks of 2 unreleased tracks, 2 b-sides, and a long version of "jamming" which was released on single only.
disc two has ten tracks of which 5 are previously unreleased live tracks from the exodus tour. the remaining five are from session with lee perry featuring members of aswad and another band. all the tracks are digitally remastered. and there's a nifty 28-page booklet. the whole package fits into this nifty plastic slipcase with a sticker boldly proclaiming the album as Time Magazine's album of the century. cool!
a real find for reggae fans! if you decide to troop over to M1 now, it ain't located in the woefully sparse reggae/ska rack. you can find it near the entrance at the racks close to the wall. unfortunately, there are like only two copies left.
reggae fans unite!
and oh yeah, there's a history of reggae music titled, bloodlines. it's available at book sale outlets for a measly 30 bucks. its over 200 pages with loads of pix and lotsa info.
and now we be jammin.
peace

here's another bargain for reggae fans. okay. i know it's been raining and reggae doesn't seem to be ideal with stormy weather but still ... its a good bargain.
Simply The Best Reggae Album.
yes, that's the title but no, it's not the best reggae album. methinks it's either Bob Marley's Exodus or UB40's Labour of Love.
what it is (definitely intended) is that it's a 2-disc set with 44 tracks from Big Mountain, Aswad, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, the great Melodians, and of course, Bob Marley and a whole mess of rastafarian rockin beats than you can shake a ganja stick at. all for Php 450 at Tower or M1.
stir it up, dudes.

One of the most simple yet best ways to spend some time off for me was to watch Brownman Revival.

Of course, who can not mention the latest RNB (Reggae Na Bisaya) group, Junior Kilat?
OPM Reggae is seemingly on the uprise nowadays, with Peace Pipe and this compilation called "Island Riddims." It contains a nationwide reggae bands. One of my favorites would be Island Joe.
I'm also a fan of Sublime and 311.
All hail Bob Marley.
