The Ateneo Grade School golf team spoiled La Salle’s attempt for a clean sweep of all divisions in the 6th Samsung Golf Interscholastic Championship held on 22-24 January 2006 at the Tagaytay Highlands and Midlands Golf & Country Club.
The AGS team was the only team to win in the five to play thee to count format in the team division, beating La Salle Greenhills by a big margin of 20 points after three days of competition that started at the Highlands and moved to the Midlands on the second and third days.
It was a sweet victory and revenge for the Ateneo grade school jungolfers to come back and beat their La Salle rivals. The trio of Paeng Vera Cruz, Nico Evangelista and RJ Banzon went through weeks of training to support Jungolf standouts Marcel Puyat and Bino Dela Paz.
Marcel Puyat, Grade 6 student of the Ateneo Grade School, also won the championship in the individual play of the grade school division while teammate Bino dela Paz was first runner-up. Puyat led Dela Paz by 15 points, while Dela Paz had to fight it out in a close battle to the end to win by one point over La Salle’s Miggy Yee.
The AGS golf team was supported by the Ateneo Golf Foundation’s Andy Dumlao and Iggy Clavecilla, including ADMU Athletics Director Junjun Capistrano and Alumni Relations Director Jun Dalandan.
The 7th Samsung Interscholastic Golf Championship will be held at the Canlubang Golf and Country Club in September 2006.
