Where do AdMU sports teams get their funding?
atenean_blooded
Hmm, if I'm correct, they get it from the following sources:

1. Direct funding from the University's annual budget
2. Funds raised by the Ateneo Sports Fund Campaign
3. Funds from the Ateneo Annual Fund
4. Alumni/Booster donations
5. Sponsors

Adroth (whom I assume is a fellow Davao folk), atenean_blooded's post basically is the backbone of the Ateneo Sports Fund or the Blue Eagle Fund or whatever its name is.

Let me just add... As for our Ateneo de Davao (I am an alum of the Ateneo de Davao High School), some members of its Board of Trustees (led by Benjie Lizada) have been in consultation with some administrators and alum of Ateneo de Manila on how to generate funds for sports/varsity programs.

By the way, are you presently active in the affairs of Ateneo de Davao? Maybe you can share to the citizens of Atenista.net how the sports program of Ateneo de Davao is currently doing. Thanks.

Yup, Davao born, raised, and educated (although I haven't lived there for some time).

I'm just an observer. Too far away to really be involved smile.gif

Someone was ranting on the Ateneo de Davao forum about the administration's alleged lack of support. I tossed in the idea that maybe instead of asking for more funds from the school (which really should go to teacher's benefits and facilities improvement), the sports department should explore external funding.

Given the AdMU's active sports program, I figured it would be best to ping the folks here about the matter.

Thanks Atenean_blooded.

Would you know how much AdMU sports / gets per year, and the percentages attributed to the above sources?
atenean_blooded
Sorry, adroth. I don't have those kinds of figures (yet, hehe).

the annual budget for teams in ateneo is very small. thats why they get boosters and sponsors because the annual budget is barely enough to go by one semester. most of the other funds go to the basketball team of course and they get the most sponsors. the budget is really a big issue. sana the basketball team can share
adroth
How do these "boosters" work? Are these donations in cash, or in kind? Typically where do they come from?
joescoundrel
Boosters are typically a volunteer group (sometimes they are not even an organization per se). They can provide anything from cash to equipment to water / sports tonics for games.

Our UAAP Men's basketball program, expectedly, has the best-organized and most generous boosters. This booster organization provides everything which may include air fare for foreign training.

Other varsity teams may not get as much support as the men's basketball team but they get by with funding from the school (or sports fund), help from parents, other relatives and friends, and sometimes the diehard fans of their respective sports (usually alumni who were varsity players in those sports). It isn't unheard of for certain varsity teams to actually spring for their own uniforms or Gatorade for instance.

Thanks for the clarification Joe. I hope you don't mind, I copied your answer to the Ateneo de Davao forum. We have a related discussion there.

What AdMU entity interfaces with these boosters? Is it the AdMU athletic department, or is it the alumni office? I assume that before any varsity can accept assistance from an external entity, it needs to get school approval, right?
BLUE HORSE
Adroth,

I'll take myself as an example. Like you, I live outside of the Philippines but I find ways in helping out specific sports program of ADMU. I have supported financially the womens varsity basketball team and team Glory Be. On one occassion, my donation through a third party was coursed through the sports office and I was issued an official Ateneo invoice for my donation. One other time, it was through team management.

I am not alone as there are others who do the same. Some Ateneo sports teams that are not well funded actually make periodic request for assistance in this fora. My suggestion to you is to get your fellow ADDU alumni and pool your resources in helping the various sports team of ADDU. Use a third party that you guys trust to handle the financial transactions in your behalf. Better yet, if your alumni association is registered with the IRS and has their own tax exempt status, your donations to ADDU can be tax deductible when you file your yearly taxes.

I think it is misleading to say that varsity teams get by with the budget that ateneo gives or from outside sources and that they do not bring out of their own pockets to buy stuff they need like gatorade or uniforms because they do this all the time. i wont mention any specific team or names but some teams can only afford to get a set of uniforms per year and their money is gone.

please do not mislead people to think that varsity players do not bring out money from their own pockets because most of the time they do. try asking the other teams who do not get mentioned that much or do not win and you will know what goes on

Hi BatangBlue,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Earlier in the thread, Joescoundrel actually mentioned that athletes also had out-of-pocket expenses. So, IMHO, no one is being mislead in that regard. Here is an excerpt from Joe's post:

Thanks for the tips BLUE HORSE

The setup you advocate will also be useful when sending donations for other non-Sports related purposes as well. This'll come in handy for all-Ateneo organized projects like last year's OPLAN SAGIP BAGYO.

I hope you don't mind, if share your post on the AdDU forum.

Hi Adroth,
You might want to PM me your email address. Perhaps I can give you some info on how you can help the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Office start the sports fund campaign for the Ateneo de Davao.

Thanks pare.
