ATENEO WON AGAINST A SCHOOL ALONG RECTOR

A win is a win ika nga.

The Ateneo de Manila Blue Booters buckled down and managed to turn an ugly, listless game into a victory over UE, 1-0, thanks to a bicycle kick by veteran Roger Lastimado.

The game saw the Atenean football machine in pretty shaky shape, with offense and defense being erratic. Passing wasn't as sharp as in previous games, and the Blue Booters had to shake off whatever jitters they were having. The first half ended without much fanfare, with the Ateneans obviously frustrated with their bad play.

The second half saw the Atenean defense tighten, with UE being constantly denied opportunities to strike. Any UE push was met by strong pressure defense, forcing bad attempts or forcing the ball into the hands of the Ateneo keeper. The Blue Booters then started taking over the game, brushing aside the rough play by the UE team.

Well into the second half, Roger Lastimado hit a bicycle kick that bounced into the goal, giving the Ateneans the lead. This was Lastimado's third goal in as many games.

Subsequent play saw the Blue Booters, buoyed by their goal, playing aggressively, keeping the ball on the UE side of the pitch. All of UE's attempts were made in vain as the Ateneo defense congealed. The Ateneans held on to their lead and prevailed, 1-0.

Kudos to Roger Lastimado for the goal, and to the rest of the Blue Booters for their good showing. Kudos also to the BBB, which led the crowd in cheering (I cannot say outdrummed the opposition, because the opposition had no drums). The revival of "Animo Ateneo" saw some beginnings today (not as the traditional Animo Yell, but as something integrated with Go Ateneo).

This was a painful loss for UE.

ANIMO ATENEO!
ONE BIG FIGHT!

Congratulations, Manny Pacquiao!

Rest in peace, Fr. Fritz Araneta, S.J.

Hmmm... let me be honest... I do not like the way "a win is a win" comes out in the posts here. Our Blue Booters played their hearts well. It was not the fault of Siojo or anyone else that the game was out of synch at the start. Perhaps we just underestimated UE, and expected more from our team.

Nevertheless, let us be thankful for this 3rd straight win. We should be proud of these Blue Booters for they really play for Ateneo pride---that you can even see them sing the Song for Mary with us proudly is a much welcome sight.

Ika nga... I love you lang 'yan!

Yes, FEU is next. And they are not to be taken lightly. They just did an upset win over the San Beda hugot-squad of the suspended.

Great seeing Fr. Vic Salanga, SJ (President of the Loyola School of Theology) cheering beside us the San Miguel Boys Choir of atenean_blooded, Legal Eagle and Posterized. Sige na nga, si ikay din part ng boys choir. Hyukhyukhyukhyukhyuk!!! laugh.gif

FR. VIC SALANGA LOVES FOOTBALL. IT WAS FUN SEEING HIM AGAIN CHEERING FOR THE ATENEO TEAM.

God bless.

hey nice to hear that. now fr. vic can focus in other field like sports other than theology. this is his last term as the president of loyola school of theology. thanks and God bless.

Let me clarify my earlier post. It was not meant to blame Siojo and Reyes but rather the fact that it was the first time in the tournament that the 4 defenders had started together and it was obvious that they had not jelled yet.

Great win for Ateneo. Is it true that Lastimado scored 2 today? If so, 5 goals in 4 games na siya. I was able to catch the last 30 minutes of the game.

On other matters, we were not allowed to play the drums after some time. Apparently, we were disrupting classes. ph34r.gif

I'm waiting for atenean_blooded's blow by blow article for the game. Wawa naman kasi kaming mga online 6th Man! Sagabal the work! tongue.gif

I think someone from the loyola schools. When I got there, they werent drumming anymore. Although I did hear them from the CTC at around 1 when I still had class tongue.gif

WOW! Galing ng Ateneo...Ang sarap talaga maging Atenista...

yun lang nga tahimik ang babbles ngayon. got to go may class pa ako, hehehe.

Comm:

I only caught the last goal.

As far as I remember, Roger didn't have any goals today (that's also per Orange, who says the second goal wasn't by Roger).

The Babble was stopped daw because there was a class taking a test.

I hope it was not a PEP Test.

Ahihihihi.

Good bounce back game for Ateneo today after Sunday's listless game against UE. Coach Ompong continued to experiment with his lineup--a luxury he can afford after Ateneo's blistering start to the season. He flooded the midfield and left only Lastimado up front. In the beginning, all of Ateneo's forays into FEU's zone were easily thwarted with Lastimado being the only target, and it looked like Coach's strategy would backfire. It turns out Roger was the only one we really needed. The first goal came from yet another Mortillore corner. The second from another lobbed ball by Ingles (?) which Roger, 2 FEU defenders and the FEU goalie all went up for. Roger jumped highest and the ball took an agonizingly long time to cross the goal line. No offense to reigning MVP Ozaeta but with 5 goals in 4 games so far, Roger's my MVP.

Coach Ompong experimented some more in the 2nd half but instead of inserting defense to protect the lead, he went to the offensive and switched to a 4-3-3 formation with Wilson-Tiongson and Cancio up front. This produced a third goal from Mickey Ingles. So far Coach has pressed all the correct buttons. Even backup goalie Madrona made a good accounting of himself and Ateneo kept its clean sheet record intact. No Goals Against in 4 games.

After the 3rd goal, Coach Ompong exhorted his boys to "continue performing, hwag mayabang" something that you'd never hear from Mr. Suave.

UST on Sunday, let's go for the sweep.

The defending champion Ateneo de Manila Blue Booters completed a sweep of the first round of the UAAP Men's Football tournament with a 1-0 victory over last year's runner up, the UST booters. Today's goal came courtesy of Mickey Ingles, who kicked an awkward shot from the side which the UST goalie and defenders failed to deflect.

The first half was a see-saw battle for possession, with the Ateneans dominating ball possession and suffocating all of UST's attempts while managing to attempt at least six of their own. The second half saw UST raise their tempo and defense, but this failed in the face of the Ateneans' ball-handling and suffocating defense.

The referees were also determined to play the spoilers' role, calling stupid calls and missing out obvious ones. In my opinion, the most stupid was the one against Ateneo striker Roger Lastimado, who was given a yellow card for the heck of it, it seems. Lastimado has five points in five games, although he did not score in this match.

The Blue Booters are in familiar territory, with a two-win lead over the nearest contender, DLSU, whose Green Booters and Lady Booters scored twin kills today, with the Men's team defeating UE 2-1 and the Ladies defeating UST 3-1. The rebuilding Ateneo Lady Booters suffered their fifth straight setback, losing to FEU 1-0. The Ateneo Lady Booters are currently in last place.

The Ateneo Blue Booters, the winningest football team in the UAAP are seeking their third straight championship and aim to make history by bagging the first three-peat in UAAP Men's Football.

Kudos also to the Ateneo Blue Babble, who led the home crowd in outcheering the opposition this afternoon. The BBB also outdrummed the opposition despite being split between two simultaneous matches.

ANIMO ATENEO!

The Ateneo de Manila Blue Booters went on to their sixth straight victory, defeating UP and the football referees, 1-0, thanks to a free kick. I'm not sure who scored, since I arrived at the game pretty late. I just saw the ball hit the back of the UP net when I got to the field.

UP and the referees tried in vain to equalize. UP was awarded a dubious free kick, which Ateneo goalie Bellina ably caught. Happy birthday, goalie!

The BBB once again led the dominant home crowd in cheering.

The games are getting pretty violent. The Ateneans were on the receiving end of rough play again, which wasn't called by the 10th wonders of the world, UAAP football referees (the 9th being the UAAP basketball referees). It reached a point that Ateneo coach Ompong Merida was thrown out of the game. In later play, a UP spectator (or was he part of the coaching staff?) entered the playing area and shoved an Ateneo player.

The games are getting more intense.

And I second the call from a friend: Cancel all appointments. The games are starting to heat up.

I think it was MVP Pat Ozeata who scored the free kick.

Ateneo won the battle of penalty kicks in what turned out to be a very chippy game. Our team played well and pretty much dominated possession but somehow our finishing touch abandoned us. The ref awarded us a somewhat dubious penalty kick which Pat Ozaeta converted. Ref, later tried to even it out by calling an equally dubious penalty kick for UP which Man-of-the-Match birthday boy Jerwin Belina coolly saved. #6 Peralta looked a little out of position at striker, though he was the one who won us the penalty kick. Looks like some of our guys will be missing the next game due to yellow cards (Roger ?) but at least JP Merida will be back.

Elsewhere in the league the De La Salle - San Beda Green ArcherRed Lioncoalition is starting to jell, demolishing UE 4-0.

hope we can be more prudent and calm next time. God bless.

Yeah, he's coming off a slip-disk in his back. He's a potent striker, we just need him to get back in the groove. Galing yan.

Hats off to Jerwin. Good job, totoy!

The referee in the game sucked. I think he's to blame for the rough game. If he were more competent, none of the unneccesary rumbles would have occured. Dalawa talaga kalaban ng team, yung opposing side and the officials.

That explains why he seemed a step slow. I saw him play last year, in midfield, and I remembered him as the 'makulit' type of player.
