hey!! haven't been posting here for quite a while! i'm glad there is a post about rich here, he's my fave player sa ADMU, even though im not an alumnus before when i watched yung benefit games sa Rizal, i tried approaching him kaya lang i chickened out kase nahihiya ako, a lot of people are saying na he's nice nad all pero pag nandun ka na pala kakabahan ka to come up and talk to him!! sana when the uaap games start this year i can work up my nerves to just ask for an autograph any advice from rich alvarez fans out there??

Rich played really well kanina sa MICABA game.. He made a slam that almost brought the whole house down! May sumabay na adamson player sakanya on his way to the ring pero nakabuwelo na si Alvarez so.. PERFECT SLAM! standing ovation for you there dude! PAti ako napatayO!

yup, kasi kanina wen I was watchin his pbl game, sbi nung sportscasters na he was playing hurt and yun nga, injured yung right ankle nya

The Eagles Have Landed!

Oct. 5, 2002 will go down in the country's sports history as the Ateneo Blue Eagles finally ended their 14-year title drought and became the champions in the Universities' Athletic Association of the Phillipines Men's Senior Basketball. Everybody cheered for them as if we all share the dream. They were hailed as heroes and became instant celebrities.

From a group of young men just trying to do their own thing and playing what is supposed to be just a game to a pandemonium that even the not so interested ones are now becoming fanatics. Now, their faces seem so familiar as you can see them almost everywhere, magazines, television shows/series, and not to mention those billboards we see on highways, and to think that it's been months since tha big day occured.

But even with all the fame that came along with their triumph, these guys remain to have a clear view of the whole picture, and that their studies is far more important than any of these. And yeah, did i fail to mention that some of them are as much of a pet lover as they are of a basketball player?

So if i mention Rich Alvarez, Paolo Bugia, Marco Benitez and Gec Chia I'm sure that you'll get excited and will want to know more what and who's behind those names. Well, I must be the envy of most girls now since I got a sneak peek on their lives, homes, hobbies... to sum it all up, their lives outside the hardcourt.

Rich Alvarez: The hard court's tough guy

Ok, if you see him during games you'll think that this guy is as hard as a rock. He slamdunks as if there's no tomorrow. And when it's defense time, he'll fight till there's no room for you to breathe, and there's no choice but to give up. A back to back UAAP Men's Senior Basketball MVP his feat has yet to have an ending. Can we say "King Eagle" next year? He can only blush and say, "we'll see."

Wonder how he is when he's not holding a ball and beating the buzzer?

Rich Alvarez is far from what you can see when he's inside the court. If you ask me, the things he does and the achivements he has are enough for him to intimidate anyone. But instead, he's too polite. He's one of the few players, who play the game because they enjoy playing and are good at it, nothing more, nothing less.

He's even too modest to talk about his other passion: Dogs. Since he'd lived abroad during his junior high, he already has pets, a German Sheperd, a Pekingese and a Japanese Spitz. He only chose small dogs because his parent's didn't like big dogs in the house. And when he transferred here for college, during his first three years, he lived with an uncle who has a Labrador. Dogs became part of his life.

"When I moved out, I guess I missed the dog", so he bought himself a pet, and if you think that he could have any dog he wants since he considers himself an adult now, think again. It's a Japanese Spitz. " I still live with my parents, I don't want it to become their responsibility", said Rich.

Just like his teammate Marco and Paolo, with their hectic schedule and studies, he still doesn't mind having pets around. In fact, if you ask him if his pets are a bother to him, he'll answer "I don't think so. It'll be fun. It's therapeutic. Even if she's a dog, she can be your company."

Though he admits that it's an added responsibility because you're the one who'll take her to the vet. "But if you really want to have a dog, I don't think it's a problem."

Rich isn't alone when it comes to his entusiasm with dogs, his girlfriend Alexi is also head over heels with these canine creatures. The truth is, when Lexi's pet Labrador died, she cried the whole day to Rich. I don't think a person with no interest in dogs can take that, but since Rich knew exactly how it felt, he bought her a Labrador. Now, the dog is almost six months old.

Mimi, a name he handpicked from a long list that Lexi gave her, stays in Lexi's house. The dog's in her prime. Young, restless and playful, qualities that neither Lexi, especially Rich possesses. According to Lexi, the dog loves Rich so much that she literally jumps up to him when she sees him. There's this one time that they gave her a collar with a bell on it, a few days later the bell is nowhere to be found, when Rich brought him to the clinic, they found the bell on his tummy, Mimi chew the whole thing.

Both softhearted, they find it doubly difficult to discipline the dog. Mimi makes it more difficult when their garden's grass dies because she loves peeing on it. Sometimes, they have to force themselves when it's needed. "It's not us to hurt a dog, even if it's for discipline", says Lexi. Though the dog seems to be afraid of Lexi's mom. Good thing, they're getting her a trainer soon.

Being devoted dog lover, you won't see him having any other pets, reptiles to be exact in the near future. "That's difficult to take care of."

Dogs are already part of Rich's system, just like basketball. He will not get over them, no matter what the odds are and will be. They keep him balanced in a world where toughness isn't the sole answer in surviving. It needs the same amount of modesty to get through.
