Used to play a couple of years ago...Want to get hooked again... Is there any organized badminton club for alumni?
Empress-of-The-Sun
A formal group? Yeah, that would be a nice thing to have. I haven't heard of any being formed yet.

I did see several flyers on a badminton tournament between ADMU and DLSU alumni. It was called "Smash for Smash" and I think it's starting this weekend. It was probably an offshoot of the UAAP Men's Basketball euphoria. smile.gif

I love badminton, even if it doesn't love me very much. I just really hate the endless quest for a vacant badminton court. rolleyes.gif

Ateneo-La Salle alumni tournament's over the next two weekends. First weekend at La Salle Greenhills, next weekend at Ateneo. It's an all-doubles event, I think. The turnout was so strong that they had to create a Class F category to accommodate all participants. Training semi-hard for it :-). I'm sure La Salle has a better selection of players to choose from (I know some of their better recreational players and they're entered in a class below me) but you can't beat Ateneo for spirit. At least that's what I'm hoping.

if you're in the south area, there's a new court in FTI (near C5 exit). the palce is called CAMP BADMINTON. they recently just had a soft-launch, but the 6 courts can already be played on. no membership. just call-in to reserve a slot. PM me if you want the contact info.
Upper Box
Lotsa new courts in the Makati area also. Badminton Central along Pasong Tamo is okay. Just don't play court 1 in the daytime because the sun can hit you in the eyes. In Quezon City there's new clubs in the New Manila area and, I heard, new courts somewhere near SM North.

The strategy for booking Moro is to get a bunch of alumni to book large blocks of time so a big group can play as long as it likes. You just need to get organized. Whether Moro's a good place to play is another question. The court surface doesn't feel right and shuttle movement in the air can be very irregular.
hazpafis
i play badminton at this court near sm north. marami na ring nakakaalam though kasi pag after work hours puno na rin. and theres a new badminton court sa may balintawak daw.
Kaiser8
i play badminton! has anyone heard of this badminton place (i dunno the name) along pioneer?
Upper Box
That would be Badminton Central -- turn right onto Pasong Tamo from Buendia if you're coming from EDSA. Looks like a former warehouse, rubber flooring over cement, I think, large-ish crowd. Awful parking up front though.

CHUTS? I've also been there. Ok naman ang courts.

Wonder where all these courts were 20+ years ago when I could have really cultivated my playing skill. Too bad for me, I really liked playing badminton when I was younger.

hmmm, i don't think that's it, my friend said that this new place was somewhere in mandaluyong.
Upper Box
Take it up again dude. The sport's beginning to boom in Manila judging by the number of courts coming up. I also know a friend who quit a good bank VP job to start a badminton distributorship. Another friend is looking into the feasibility of tying up with shuttlecock suppliers in China. Good a time as any to start. Plus you'll need a sport you can schedule around a smaller group when your basketball gang starts getting bogged down with middle aged commitments.
Upper Box
Whoops, sorry misread your post. Heard about that place in Boni too but no particulars. Friends say the ceiling is low, bit of a hassle when your shuttle hits structural features on high shots. But I've never seen it myself.

I've noticed that too. I resumed playing badminton last year. Bought a racquet and all. However, stopped playing when they tore down the company badminton court.

I now join my batchmates in their weekly basketball game at Moro. However, it is surprising to note that other batchmates (who I never thought played badminton) go to Moro for badminton and not basketball.
Kaiser8
yup, badminton is definitely booming nowadays judging by the number of people signing up for badminton lessons. also, i've noticed that some of my friends who didn't give a damn about sports before are now suddenly into it. weird.

M4U! please PM me naman the details of BADMINTON CAMP (place, contact number..) thanks!
my family's sooo into badminton. my parents, siblings, cousins, uncles and aunts. ang cute nga eh.. since my mom comes from a big family, once in a while they organize a tournament against one another. ako yung parang blacksheep kasi i'm not really into it as they are. hehe..
recently kasi it's very hard to find a place to accomodate such a huge group, even though they're members in a club in villamor airbase, ang hirap narin kasi ang dami ng naglalaro. they're (my mom, dad, aunts, uncles) planning to turn an old warehouse into a badminton club 'ata.. im not sure yet.. hehe.. biggrin.gif

My officemates and I used to play every week at crame. Haven't played since June though.

Funny... i just met another atenean this morning and we were talking about all the new courts that have been opening lately...
Empress-of-The-Sun
Woohoo!! Ang dami na natin. I like playing in Moro because of the "ambience"...hehe. But seriously, those open windows in Moro can really disrupt some shots with the draft they bring in. And there's something about the positioning of the lights.

As for that new court in Mandaluyong, it's actually along Boni Ave. It's called Shuttle Zone. They have 6 courts, and yeah, the ceiling's kinda low. So for those who love throwing lobs during service, it would be kinda irritating. Oh and, you have to personally go to the place to make reservations. But if you buy their pre-paid cards, you can reserve via phone. hehe, pati badminton, may prepaid na rin.

UpperBox and everyone else, thanks for the tips on new badminton places. So far, I've only played in Aguinaldo, Crame, Chuts, Valle Verde, Club Filipino, Moro and Shuttle Zone. Gah. Getting a slot after 4 pm in those places is next to impossible. It's a good thing new places are popping up.

M4U... I already sent you a PM

I LOVE WATCHING AND PLAYING BADMINTON!!! are there any sky subscribers who regularly buy the tv guides? if you can, please post the scheds of any tournaments. i'd really appreciate it! i tried checking out Star Sports/ESPN online, but somehow, the search functions haven't been working well. thanks a lot in advance! local tournament scheds are fine, too. also, if you guys are in touch with any of our varsity players, please ask them to post the scheds/venues of their tournaments. i'd be really interested to watch.

M4U, i'm curious about those new courts in the south! please PM me the details. ty!

Sh0rTie - you wouldn't happen to be part of the V family would you? The one that plays on court 3 in Villamor all the time? I don't really expect you to confirm this as it might give you away, but I've heard stories about them, mostly from club members amazed at how so many people from the same family could be so into badminton. I used to play in Villamor but had to give it up when I moved -- sayang because the competition there was pretty good. Even the casual players were very dangerous.

Empress: I know the feeling about being frustrated for courts (I was from the Villamor club after all!). I moved out of Manila some time back, but am still a frequent visitor, and when I'm in town I'm amazed at how long the lines are for courts. One of these days you should see the club I play in if you ever come by my part of the world. Six courts, available most of the time, blonde wood, padded basketball flooring. Has saved me a good pounding on my knees, and I think I'll live a longer life as a result :-).

yup, i also used to play (after office hours) in villamor but we often had to wait a while before we could get a court. anyway, CAMP BADMINTON is also a converted warehouse. there are 6 courts (2 matted/rubberized)and the rates (for now) are 150/hr for the matted and 100/hr for the standard courts. I think the official flooring will arrive in time for their full launch in December. there's also a mini-spa, a snack bar, a yonex counter, among other things. the place is still rather new so there may still be some work-in-progress around the facilities. but the courts are definitely playable (and no worries about ceilings either!).

You can call 838-4301 loc. 3915 and look for Mags or Arleen. Directions in getting there: As you approac the end of C5, take the right when you reach the fork (left would land you at the South Luzon tollway). make a left at the service road, and that will lead you straight into FTI (you can also take Pasong Tamo Extension if coming from Makati). As you enter the gate of FTI, you'll see a big green streamer to your left. That would be the entrance to the CB complex...

If you're also interested in setting up your own court or converting an old warehouse like you mentioned, just look for Arleen (the owner). She can share her own experience and give you a few tips, too! i.e. contacts with Victor (equipment specialist), etc.

P.S. I'll be there tom am. Hopefully, I'll get to meet some of you?!

Did anyone catch the La Salle-Ateneo games in LSGH? Couldn't go. Hope to catch the ones in Blue Eagle Gym, though.
Upper Box
We clobbered La Salle in most of the top classes but they beat us in the middle and lower. I think they're ahead on matches won overall. But the format will guarantee an Ateneo vs La Salle final at every level (Best 2 Ateneo knockout, best 2 La Salle knockout to determine the finalists in each class) so we can still win in terms of class championships. Next weekend's games at Loyola Center.

I think i know of the family you're referring to... "THE V" Family.

Since the opening of BADMINTON Central at Pasong Tamo, there are less people coming to Villamor (they said!) so less competition. I usually play at villamor on saturdays rather than during weekdays...longer playing time smile.gif My friends have already tried out FTI and it's ok daw.

badminton.... fun, makes you sweat like crazy, and you don't have to be tall or athletic [unlike in basketball] to excel in it! i swear, our country should support badminton --- it's great mental and physical exercise!!!

-------
sino nakapasok sa JVC quarterfinals? saw the game between south korea and indonesia. galing ng indonesia! cheered for them, even though yoo yung sin (from south korea) is my crush hehe.

-------
badminton organizations.... try smash_ph (yahoo egroup), PEX Badminton club - some ateneans are members, the different country clubs in MM and tagaytay - of course you have to be a member or at least accompanied by one to play, then there's also chuts- haven't played there, but some people from PEX have already, camp agui-bathrooms are not great, but lotsa great players strut their stuff there, so you can get a lot of pointers, st. benedict's college, up - i think this is where the UAAP games are held, moro lorenzo - a bit expensive and windy, rizal - air conditioned, and camp crame - haven't played there either.

------
from a reliable source : UAAP season for badminton is in january!!!!!!!!!

Hello blue blooded fellas! I'm Emerson Co, the current team manager and player for the Ateneo-Siemens Mobile Badminton Team. As you guys have mentioned, we had the alumni tourney against DLSU last november. This thing was long planned even before season 65 started this year. As for the alumnis and badminton afficionados out there. I would like to inform you that you may reach me through my email and send in comments, suggestions and questions regarding the newly formed ATENEO ALUMNI BADMINTON GROUP.. technically its a club in its own nature established last week. Currently, we could only reach those who participated in last year's ALL-ATENEO and this year's ADMU-DLSU tourney. And sadly we lost this year because of some technical stuff that did not go our way. My email is emerson@easycall.com.ph Soon my team will launch a website for our endeavor, the team and the alumni who support us. Incidentally, please watch our game in the UA&P Tournament this Jan 11-12 in Camp Crame 8am to 5pm. UAAP tournament in Rizal Jan 18-19, 24-25 and Feb 1-2 from 8am to 3pm. The Blue Babble will be there to lead, but the heart and soul of the team is in you, the supporters of our team. The team is pretty strong and can and may fight for 1st place. Please come! ONE BIG FIGHT!

AKo I love badminton kse it's much more faster and quicker than tennis. Atska mas convenient kse all you need is another player tapos kahit walang net at court pwd kahit sa tapat lang nang house e. Sayang wala pang magandang badminton covered court sa Las Pinas, lahat nasa Alabang e sobrang layo naman just to play.
eagle99
I didn't realize so many ateneans play badminton!!
I know of a new facility coming up in the Libis area. It will have 9 courts but has a membership fee... something like Badminton Central. They will have airconditioned lockers with shower facilities. Its called Yellow Feather Badminton Center. The courts will be of rubber matting called Mondosports from italy.
