--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeffrey Cariaso is set to sign a fresh three-year contract worth P13.2 million with Coca-Cola today as the Tigers apply the finishing touches to their PBA All-Filipino Cup title-retention bid.
Cariaso and Coke management would be sealing the contract that is the best that could be offered the nine-year veteran guard under the new league rules regarding the maximum monthly salary a player can receive.
Coach Chot Reyes said they are giving Cariaso P400,000 a month for the year before the player falls under the P350,000 monthly limit in the contract's final two years.
"We would have offered him more, but he understands that we can't," Reyes said.
It is not only Cariaso who is set to sign up today. Raffi Reavis, also instrumental in the Tigers' win over Alaska in last year's finals that wound up at Christmas Day, is also inking a new three-year deal.
The amount Reavis would be getting would not be disclosed, but Reyes said it is 30 percent less than the P300,000-plus monthly salary the 6-foot-8 Fil-Am used to get.
Cariaso missed last year's finals due to a groin injury he suffered in the semifinals against San Miguel Beer. Although he was willing to play in the Tigers' pre-season game against FedEx yesterday, Reyes opted to sit him out.
Still, the Tigers pounced, pounded and pummeled the hapless Express in a 101-77 rout before an appreciative crowd that packed the CEU Centrodome in Malolos, Bulacan.
That the Tigers did it minus a number of key players spoke well of their capability to do a title-repeat.
Aside from Cariaso, Johnny Abarrientos, Estong Ballesteros, Freddie Abuda and Chris Bolado skipped the game as they're still nursing different injuries. But the Coca-Cola shock-troopers, plus a couple of
TRYOUTS in
Jeck Chia and Rob Wainwright, still proved too much for FedEx which also played without key players Yancy de Ocampo and John Ferriols. Ryan Bernardo sat out the final half after suffering a bad fall in the second quarter.
The Express lost their two assignments in this PBA pre-season series as they also suffered a blowout at the hands of the Purefoods Hotdogs last week at the Rodriguez Sports Center in Marikina. The Tigers next play the Shell Turbochargers on Feb. 16 at the Nene Aguilar Gym.
Though starting their buildup only two weeks ago, the Tigers displayed amazing form and completely outplayed the Express. They raced to a 30-20 lead in the first quarter, stretched that to 57-40 at halftime and held huge double-digit spreads in the final half.
Former MBA star Reynel Hugnatan, the No. 7 pick overall in the recent draft, scored 20 points to pace the Tigers who also drew double-digit outputs from Poch Juinio and Reavis. Rudy Hatfield played only a few minutes and scored only one point.
Ren-Ren Ritualo, Vergel Meneses and Jerry Codinera combined for 52 points for the Express.

As you can see, Jeck Chia is not yet assured a slot in the Coke roster. He was given a chance to play because several Coke players are in the injured list. If you include Chia and Wainwright, there will be a total of 15 players in the Coke line-up and only 12 will make it to the active roster.
If Chia does make it to the roster, hecan only play Shooting Guard in the PBA because he's too short for a Small Forward and doesnt have the ball handling skills of a Point Guard. With the likes of Jeffrey Cariaso, Leo Avenido, Ato Morano and Jojo Manalo playing ahead of him, he would be the 5th option.
Dont worry. He will surely get a lot of minutes as a practice player.
