If there are, let us know about your fave NHL team, players, and hockey memories! Here are mine:

1. Fav team: The New York Rangers, baby!
2. Fav player (forward): it's a tie between Theoren Fleury and Mike Modano
3. Fav player (defenseman): Brian Leetch
4. Fav player (goalie): it's a tie between Mike Richter and Felix Potvin
5. Fav memory: Game 7 of the 1993-94 season Stanley Cup finals, when my Rangers beat the Canucks and won the Cup after a 54-year drought! biggrin.gif

I know my choices aren't the "best" in the league, but I've been watching the NHL for almost 10 years now and I really like these people smile.gif So who are your picks?
Cami
Fave NHL team: Edmonton Oilers!

Players: Pavel Bure (this guy can FLY), Tommy Salo, and Dominic Hasek. (I dunno what position Bure plays now. Salo and Hasek are goalies. Heh. I like goalies. biggrin.gif)

Fave memory: (April 1999) Skyreach Centre, Edmonton - The Oilers beat Colorado! SWEEEET! Tommy Salo was great that night. And yeah, nothin' like watchin' it all live and singin' Rock and Roll Part 2 whenever they made a goal. biggrin.gif

I was in fifth grade when that happened. I was SO crushed!!! I was a Canuck fan. biggrin.gif It was fun though, the way the Canucks got back from a 3-1 deficit. Oh man. Can't believe I still remember that one. biggrin.gif

Bure's a forward and he is awesome  even if I was rooting for the other team back in 94. (My brother was rooting for the Canucks, too; but then he always roots against me for some reason rolleyes.gif )

Nice to meet you, Thornclaw smile.gif
Cami
Would that mean that if I'm rooting for Edmonton you'll be rooting for Calgary?

PARIAH!! biggrin.gif

But hey, '94 was a blast. I still remember the NY crowd as they chanted "We want the cup! We want the cup!" There were less than 2 seconds left, and somehow, I was still hoping for a miracle. Oh well!

If there are Rangers that I'd remember, it would be Messier, Graves, and Richter. Gretzky too. And he was an Oiler too. biggrin.gif

And yeah, nice to meetcha too 5FootCarrot. Tayo lang ata may gusto ng hockey dito. smile.gif

Hindi naman smile.gif Aside from the Rangers, whom I really like as a team, I tend to root for individual players na lang and I must admit I'm not that familiar with the Calgary players ohmy.gif Is Doug Weight still with the Oilers, btw?

You may be interested to know that Messier, Graves and Gretzky were all former Oilers  Analysts were pointing out
during the 1994 finals that there were so many former Oilers on the Rangers -- besides Messier and Graves, I believe Stephane Matteau, Esa Tikkanen, Kevin Lowe and Craig McTavish (who's coaching the Oilers now?) were also Oilers. Ewan ko lang kung naabutan nilang lahat si Gretzky before Gretz was traded to LA.

I actually know a couple of other hockey fans from my batch in Ateneo, but don't know if any of them belong to the message board.

1. Fav team: San Jose Sharks!!! and Colorado Avalanche

2. Fav player (forward): Eric Lindross

3. Fav player (defenseman): Owen Nolan

4. Fav player (goalie): Patrick Roy

5. Fav memory: Last year, Sharks against the Avalanche in Western Division eventhoh the sharks didn' win it was the best series I've ever watched. biggrin.gif

can't wait for this fall!

I don't think so. Sadly, the Oilers aren't as rich as New York so they couldn't afford the great players. sad.gif I think they still have Todd Marchant, though. KAYA YAN! Plus, they still have Salo! biggrin.gif

Yeah, I know Gretzky and Messier were former Oilers. Just wasn't quite sure about Graves. And McTavish still coaches the Oilers. biggrin.gif

Hmm. I don' know any hockey fans from my batch. Puro basketball lang ata eh. I got it all from my brother, who's 10 years older than me -- kaya Grade 5 pa lang ako, na-brainwash na pagdating sa panonood ng sports. biggrin.gif

Yes, Graves and MacTavish were both Oilers. And I know that the Rangers have the biggest payroll in the NHL -- hopefully they'll get a good return this coming season.

The closest I ever got to a Toronto Maple Leaf was to have my picture taken outside of the Air Canada Centre in downtown Toronto; and the closest I ever got to a New York Ranger was to pass behind Madison Square Garden on my way to take the train to Niagara Falls tongue.gif ...but someday, I will have an NYR season ticket!

I did get to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto (it kicked ass! and I have a picture with the Stanley Cup! ) and I think my cousin went to school with Kris Draper before he (my cousin) moved back here smile.gif
Cami
Season tickets! *drool*

That Hall of Fame must've been awesome. *le sigh* Oh well! Least me and my sis have a picture with the statue of an Oiler Gretzky holding The Cup over his head. Heh heh. tongue.gif That was outside Skyreach. It rocked. biggrin.gif

Hmm. Pansin ko lang. The way we're talking about player "sightings", parang nakakita na rin ng celebrity. biggrin.gif

Damn. Can't wait for the next season to start! biggrin.gif
5FootCarrot
They are celebrities to hockey fans smile.gif

Yup, the Hall of Fame was cool. I also saw the net where Gretzky scored his 802nd goal (breaking Gordie Howe's all time NHL record) and I think you'll like the interactive area smile.gif

If you ever go to Toronto, go na rin to Gretzky's Restaurant on # 99 (where else? LOL) Blue Jay Way -- masarap yung food, and you can bring home a hockey puck from the souvenir shop.

Let's go OIILLLEEERRRSSSSS!!!!
Panoorin niyo nalang si Mike Comrie ng Oilers, the next Gretzky.....He shoots....he Scooooorrrreeeessssss!!!!! Oilers 2003 Stanley cup champs....

Dagdag lang pala...I just noticed some very interesting parallels between the 1994 Rangers and our 2002 Blue Eagles.

1. Title drought - 54 years for the Rangers, 14 years for the Eagles.

2. Nail-biter conference finals - 7 games against the New Jersey Devils for the Rangers, 2 games against UE for the Eagles.

3. Buzzer-beating wins - Stephane Matteau's game-winning goal in overtime of Game 7 against the Devils for the Rangers, Gec Chia's "The Shot" in Game 2 against UE for the Eagles.

4. Early leads in the championship series - the Rangers had a 3-games-to-1 advantage over the Vancouver Canucks, while the Eagles won Game 1 of the 3-game UAAP finals series.

5. Opponents force rubber matches - the Canucks rallied to tie the series at 3 games apiece, and DLSU won Game 2 of the finals.

6. Our heroes win the rubber matches - Rangers defeat Canucks, 3-2, in Game 7 of the Finals to win the Stanley Cup, and the Eagles down the Archers, 77-70 in Game 3 of the finals.

7. On the nights that they won their respective championships, both the Rangers and the Eagles were wearing white jerseys (Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup finals was held in Madison Square Garden).

Both were truly storybook endings that just had to happen

I'm don't really follow hockey a lot, but I watched an NHL game live some time ago.. Chicago Blackhawks vs. Phoenix Coyotes. I actually had more fun watching NHL than NBA if measured by "interesting stuff happening per minute" - body checks, solid hits, even fights. Para siyang cross between soccer and wrestling, only hockey is for real! He he he =P

That's why I love hockey -- you can hit people! Another of my fave memories was watching Pat Verbeek (siguro mga 5'9 lang siya) try to punch out Larry Murphy (6'4 or more)! LOL biggrin.gif

Just thought I'd revive this thread because THEO FLEURY IS BACK!!! Woohoo!

The Blackhawks lost to Anaheim on the night of the return, but he made an unbelievable behind the back goal during the game. If he kicks ass as unstable as he is, he'd probably become one of the all-time greats once he gets his act together.

He also had a very interesting statement in the Yahoo! article about his comeback: "My mental frame of mind is in really good shape." LOL biggrin.gif
Maverick
Carrot,

Am referring to your original questions at the start of this thread.

I used to follow hockey in the eighties when the Oilers were just about tearing up the league with the "Great One" Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Paul Coffey. When the Oilers started breaking apart and Gretz moved to a non-hockey town like LA, I knew something was lost in the sport.

Actually, following hockey in those days was pretty much a struggle since you could only catch the games on FEN and the reception was so bad that you couldn't make out the puck. You knew they scored when they raised their hands!

I was also privileged to see on TV the "Miracle on Ice" game in the 1980 Winter Olympics when the US team won over the Soviets. I originally wanted to watch the game to see the Soviet goalie, Rinat Dassaiev, who was known as the world's best at that time. I'll never forget the way it ended with the announcer yelling "Can you believe it!" into the mike over and over.

I probably followed hockey since it was an outsider thing to do at a time I felt that I was an outsider myself. Since it did not snow here, there was no chance of me or my friends actually playing the sport so the game had this unreality about it. It was a great exercise in following obscure sports. It never dawned on me that Filipinos would actually watch let alone play the sport.

Then, they built the malls and the rinks and ice skating became a thing to do on a date. Well, there it is.

GLEN SATHER IS AN IDIOT. WITH ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, HE SHOULD HAVE A STANLEY CUP CONTENDER RIGHT NOW. INSTEAD, HE HAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE UNDER ACHIEVING TEAM IN HOCKEY.

TEAM CANADA - BEST IN THE WORLD
CANUCKS - BEST IN THE NHL

no offense guys, i just happen to dislike the rangers a lot and it just so happens that the players i dislike a lot happen to be in new york now.

and by the way sophist, owen nolan is a forward

And it just so happens that a lot of the players I like are on the Rangers so I guess we're even tongue.gif

Whatever happened to Trevor Linden? Didn't he set some Iron Man (most games played) record? I can't quite remember.
Chipmunk
well, TREVOR LINDEN is back in VANCOUVER
which is really great because VANCOUVER is where he belongs

the thing is
messier came to vancouver
and out of respect, linden gave him the 'c'
then mess got keenan to coach the canucks
then they ganged up on linden
and eventually linden got traded

that got all of vancouver pissed. trevor linden - the greatest canuck player, traded, by our supposed coach and captain, who used to be our notorioius enemies (keenan and mess were on the 94 rangers). without linden, and with messier, the canucks never made the playoffs.

but now, linden is back and we're kicking ass

Hi Carrot.

Got turned on to hockey in a big way in this place. School I go to turns out to be a big hockey powerhouse and I spent an inordinate amount of time at the hockey rink. I even won an autographed hockey jersey for going to a game. Show it to you when I see you next. School has a new hockey arena going up and will be open by January next year.

Used to go to hockey games with my classmates, one of whom was a Californian who kept asking: "When's the kickoff?" (Actually, for the sake of comparison, my school is like the La Salle of this town -- urban school located beside a busy street with the trolley line going up and down the road. School stretches almost 2 miles up and down said street and it's a bother getting from building to building. Crosstown rivals are like the Ateneo of this place -- suburban, Jesuit-run, big leafy hilly and beautiful campus. School mascot is an eagle to boot. Main rotunda of rival school even has an eagle statue like our own campus.)

City is a big hockey-town too. Were terribly disappointed when the Broons contrived to lose to Les Habs after going up 3-1. City went into mourning. But, we're kind of used to that.

Wasn't really rooting for any team in particular in the Stanley Cup after the Black and Gold were bounced out but my sympathies were with the Flames. Couldn't bear the thought of the Cup going to a city with great weather.

Anyway, my Canadian classmate contrived to invite himself to my room to watch the Stanley Cup games. Had to endure double OT in Game 6 and ended up sleeping past midnight. For Game 7, he started inviting all sorts of people to my room for the game. Had to tell him that the party was off since I had to play in a softball game tonight. Caught the last 2 periods though.

Bolts won. Cup is in Tampa Bay. Enjoy it because it looks like the last hockey you'll see for a long time.
5FootCarrot
Hi, Mav. Yes, I've heard that quite a few of the pro players are alumni of your school. Anson Carter, one of the few black dudes in active NHL duty, is one if I recall correctly.

And of course Bean Town would be a hockey town -- the Bruins are an Original Six team! cool.gif There's a great hockey tradition in Boston. Oh, and speaking of Boston, a friend and I were kind of torn during the Bruins-Habs series, too. We were both cheering for the Canadian team, but we both loved Felix Potvin (Bruins goalie) too wub.gif

Carrot, Habs are the Yankees of hockey. All the more reason to hate.

Chris Drury was also a Terrier. Biggest collegiate hockey game in town is the annual Beanpot tournament which has been dubbed the BU Invitational. Favorite BU cheer to other teams: "Where's your beanpot?" Contempt is a vital component of college hockey.

Frozen Four was held in town last April. Hardest ticket to get hold off.

The Habs are so not the Yankees of hockey -- winning-streak-wise, anyway. Or at least not in recent decades tongue.gif At any rate, the only reason I was cheering for them was because I felt the Cup needed to come home to Canada.

The perennial winners I don't like are the Avalanche and the Red Wings. I was glad to see them eliminated this year, and I can say that without fear of karma -- as a Rangers fan, I believe I am suffering enough in terms of team performance!

5FootCarrot
Kaya nga sinabi ko "in recent years," eh! mad.gif tongue.gif

Unlike the Yankees, who have consistently achieved in the post-season, the Habs last won the Cup in 1993, if I recall correctly. They were the last Canadian team to do so up to the present. In fact, it's been years since the Canadian teams have gone the distance.

Now stop picking on the Yankees. It's a waste to be a hater cool.gif
BLUE HORSE
Mav & 5 foot carrot,

I was in Calgary last week and witnessed the rabid Calgarians celebrate the victory of their team. After a team victory during the whole playoff, the fans rushed to 17th Street and a mile stretch was closed by authorities so fans can celebrate. 17th street in Calgary is known for the cities restaurant, bar and club scene. Except for the drunken fans and fans walking with beer bottles and cans, there was no violence or looting. There was a show of force by the police but they did not prevent the revelry among the fans.

I was among the celebrants with my younger brother and witnessed a couple of oddities, the sighting of a Canadian white ass and a couple of boobies.

There was a group of 5 Canadian guys who I guess acted on a dare and streaked among the crowd in their birthday suit wearing nothing but tennis shoes and holding a can of beer. Their friends were following them with their clothes. Very amusing sight. Kung Canadians lang, hindi mapapahiya ang mga Pinoy! tongue.gif

Looking for my brothers friends, I almost ran smack into a young female Calgarian. This fine thing was acknowledging the cheers of the crowd to show her boobies, She flashed the crowd by pulling down her top and all the digital cameras came out. This was not an isolated case and the women were in their early 20's. That night I suffered whiplash! Heh heh heh. wink.gif Don't believe me, check out this website, www.flamesgirls.com.

I still like the scenery in South Beach!
5FootCarrot
Whoa. blink.gif BLUE HORSE, I was reading your account of the bacchanalia in Calgary and all I could think of was "Are they partying now?"

Thanks for sharing, tho; someday I want to be in the middle of something like that -- but not as the one streaking or flashing or mooning anyone! ohmy.gif

Anyhoo, so the Stanley Cup finals are over and next season seems uncertain, but another thing I'm looking forward to are the Hall of Fame inductions. I visited the Hall the last time I was in Toronto and it's really something. I can't remember if I got to touch the Stanley Cup, though unsure.gif

Ray Bourque (he made his name as a Bruin, Mav) and Paul Coffey are shoo-ins, IMO. I'd also like to see Larry Murphy and Esa Tikkanen make it.

Glenn Anderson and Rogie Vachon haven't made it into the Hall? *gasp* It's a travesty!
