There was also a time when the cafeteria used chits. You can use this to pay for the purchases you made although money was also acceptable. But unlike in other schools where chits were usually made of laminated paper, ours were plastic chips that were just a little bigger than today's twenty five centavo coin. These chits were phased out later on though as I don't remember using them in the latter part of my grade school years.
Cubao Fleahouse
i'm almost certain the plastic chits got phased out after numerous complaints from parents whose sons went home bearing different kinds of red, white, and blue "pitsa" that become absolutely worthless the moment they step out of ateneo grade school. count my mom as among those who raised bloody hell about them "stupid" chits biggrin.gif

oo nga naman, sa tingin mo ba tinatanggap na pamasahe ang mga yun? panu pa kung mauhaw ka sa labas, pwede mo bang ipamili ng coke o sago hetong mga puņetang chits na yun?

that's my mom's voice ringing in my head tongue.gif
cortinahack
Well I'd definitely agree with your mom.

Do schools use chits because they run out of loose change? Do other schools still use them?

Remember the Cow Label, sio mais, slurpies (or was it hush puppies?) sold at the cafteria beside the swimming pool? How about Blu Tac which was sold at the merchandising section of the main grade school cafeteria?

When Voltes V, Daimos, Mazinger Z, Mechanda Robot, etc. becasme a craze, we couldn't stop discussing the episodes day in and day out. Pagandahan pa ng drawing and sikat ka pag meron kang latest stickers, toys and merchandise specially during exams when you get to boast all your latest toys and games.

Can't forget those two giant slides near the rubber tree and rock garden. Madaming napasayang grade schoolers ang mga slide na yan.
cortinahack
Sikat ka nga if you actually had a toy Voltes V robot smile.gif

What about transfer fast? Does anyone remember those?
cortinahack
And mararming nainis kay Marcos when he banned those Japanese robot cartoons due to the violence they exposed the kids to.
cortinahack
Marami tuloy ang nabitin nung nawala ang Voltes V. It was only in the late 90s when we finally found out how that cartoon series ended. This was when Butch Jimenez of GMA 7 released a movie that showed the concluding episodes of Voltes V. And even though I was in my early 30s already, nanuod pa rin ako! tongue.gif

Cow Label & Chivalry Pusit are still being sold at the SM Snack Exchange.

The Slush puppies vendo machines are still available at the grade school canteens. wink.gif

Do you remember how we were assigned as cleaners for the day/week?
Do you remember using the reminders on the blackboard for our kodigo?
Doyou remember picking a fight by saying "square tayo" or going to the washroom?
Do you remember chanting "No classes!" after our basketball team won the high school title?
Do you remember hanging out by the track oval just to watch the college women's football team or track team practice?
Do you remember attending your first soiree and keeping close watch on the food rather than the girls?
Do you remember throwing water bombs on your CAT/CMT officers after graduation rites?
Do you remember when the college quad was the hub of all activity (well, it isn't anymore as I understand and see it)?

Well, there's an Ateneo/La Salle game today at Loyola (let's not call it BEG in this thread now). So do you remember when was the last time they played that here?

Was it during the Richie Ticzon years? Because I seem to recall that when they had Vince Hizon or even Rainier Sison later on, it would always be held at Araneta.

Saw some kids checking out the ACET results by Loyola. And to see them jumping up and down then checking out the old gym (looks like their not from Ateneo) brings back fond memories.

......then checking out the old gym (looks like their not from Ateneo) brings back fond memories.

This reminded me of that scene from Hoosiers (okay, "Best Shot" when it was shown sa Manila) where Gene Hackman's "promdi" team visits the city team's gym and seemed overwhelmed by the thought of being at a "big time" basketball venue. Coach asks his smallest player to sit on the shoulders of the team center and measure the height from the ring to the floor. Coach then says something to the effect that the height of the ring is ten feet, which is the same height of the ring back in the barrio gym.

Classic!!! Nice to know that the old lady can still elicit a sense of wonder from the incoming generation of Ateneans in the same way that it did to our generation.

Incredibly, whenever I access this thread, the Blue Nile's magnificent Walk Across the Rooftops album plays in my head.

Ever sit down in the middle of the college football field -- in the grass and the dirt to reminisce?

Was watching grade school kids play football before the ADMU-UST Men's game the other day and it brought quite a smile to my lips. Man, weren't we like that -- like lemmings following the ball wherever it went? Basta sipa lang ng sipa.

After the games, it was just real nice to be on that field.

just got word that Fr. Macayan passed away over the weekend.

body lies in state at the high school chapel.

rest in peace, Father. may you continue to enlighten wide-eyed, terrified freshmen in that great classroom in the sky.

I also just learned that the Blue Eagle Gym has finally been renovated. There's a whole article about it in the Ateneo website. I even picked up some interesting trivia in that article. For instance, in the 70s the gym was leased to the family of Emerito Ramos who used it as a venue for concerts and other gatherings. I entered the Ateneo Grade School in the 70s and have always known the place to be Loyola Center. In fact I've been wondering why recently everyone seems to be referring to it as the Blue Eagle Gym. It turns out the original name was Blue Eagle Gym and it was only during the lease of Emerito Ramos when its name was changed to Loyola Center. And when the lease expired and the Ateneo resumed management of the place, they went back to calling it to its original name -- the Blue Eagle Gym.

I don't know if this is common knowledge to most Ateneans but for someone like me who grew up in the Ateneo from the mid 70s to the late 80s, this Loyola Center - Blue Eagle Gym naming was a bit of a puzzle. But now I know better :-)

Remember the airconditioned prayer room at the second floor of the intermediate building, where a lot of us go to to get to say our daily prayers and a little nap?

We had one in high school, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the one you're talking about.

Yup. I remember that prayer room. Parang there's a box pa nga there where you can drop your intentions, if my memory serves me right.
MrGotti
I think the prayer room is connected to the teachers lounge and near the music room.

Hey guys! Great walk through memory lane in this blog!

I'm a poor soul who's stuck in the '80s too! Ateneo High in 1984 was such a blast....I'd say the best time of my life... bar none.

The likes of Rammy Rodrigo, Billy Reyes, Lefty Longa and Andre Planas caught in the famous 'gubat' behind the 2nd year wing before the start of the first period. What were they doing there? Only they know... but A boys swear seeing happy smoke coming from the gubat.

When asked by the Funky Father Perez, the 3 stood by the lamest excuse that they were 'collecting stones'! Unfortunately, they had the good priest for their first period teacher!

How about the square fight between Fil-Greek Michael J. Fox look-alike Lefty Longa and Ilocano Ronald Singson? Scores of upperclassmen flocked to the Yellow gate in La Vista to get a glimpse of this fight. Despite the height mismatch, Ronald, who was then taking boxing in Blue Ridge, had the upperhand in technique, but you can't deny Lefty's power. It was a good fight that settled their differences.

Boxing seemed to be the more efficient style at that time. The Rodrigos, Solivens, and even Boy Asistio were all known to have taken lessons. Sweet punching Sugar Ray Leonard was the favorite then. biggrin.gif

Yeah, I also read a previous string about Rammy Rodrigo and Don Buhain classroom brawl. Front seats to live UFC Ateneo-style... hahaha!!! Again, boxing (for Rammy)... this time against taekwondo (Don's). I remember Art Calapatia loaning his sperry sneakers because Rammy's shoes wouldn't grip on the shiny classrooom floor. 3 rounds of fun, all worth it! Loved seeing that left straight connect...
