Okay, Maverick. It's time time to get this thread started.

Loyola Center memories:
1) doing duckwalks around the Gym at 5:00 am during PT. I handled the Air Police during my time but I wasn't exempt from PT. Makoy Palisoc saw to that.
2)hearing the roar of the crowd as I hurried to get inside the gym. Allan Caidic and Pido Jarnecio were shooting the daylights out of the Loyola Center. i remember Mike Facundo, Rey Rances, and Ricky Fariñas postponing their shower (ADMU played before the UE/UST game) and watching from the entrance of the dugout.
3) Joey Pepe Smith giving hardcase Ateneo teachers the finger during Loyola Jam (a concert featuring the Juan de la Cruz Band, Sampaguita, Mike Hanopol, the Jerks, and others). It elicited a huge cheer from the crowd. Fr. Querquis wasn't pleased at all.
4) Ateneo vs La Salle. Remember Jayvee Gayoso's first game at Loyola Center in the green and white? The booing was so intense and loud that it shook the building! Back then, talagang sa bleachers ako nakaupo (with my allowance what would you expect!).

Other non-sports Ateneo memories:
Fr. Macayan yelling at the ants to get off his tree.
Fred Laureles and his five-inch platform shoes.
Mr. Selorio teaching us to sing in the big apple while doing the twist.
Pete San Pedro teaching the class that when you can't find the words to properly describe something, then "P****na is the word!" So now you know why i heckle so hard! Bwa ha ha

Bleachers King,

Hmmm, Loyola Center memories. Strange ones mostly.

I remember watching a game between two ritzy co-ed high schools (We didn't care about the game, just the girls). I was just sitting in the bleachers minding my own business. When the game heated up, the girls from one school started giving "the finger" to the girls in the other school. Of course, the other girls responded in turn. Since I was still a very impresionable youngster, I couldn't believe what I was seeing! I wanted to walk up to them and ask: "Excuse me but do you know what that means?" After the game, one of these "erpat"-types behind me walked up to one of the teachers and said something like: "I'm sure you are so proud of your girls."

The coolest music-cum-basketball memory I have is perhaps during another high school game in which Ateneo was playing. During the halftime lull, the sax player from the band went up to the highest point in the bleachers and started playing Spandau Ballet's "True." Since it was afternoon, the sun was coming through the holes in the wall and bathed him in this golden light. To complete the effect, he had a cigarette somewhere and the smoke was just blowing up. I could actually still see it in my mind. Cool.

Somehow, I have weird memories of the showers there. Even then, that place felt unsanitary. It's like you knew you would develop athlete's foot or "kachichas" just by walking around. The ultimate diss of the Loyola Center toilets, however, came in a movie.

If you remember watching the movie "Batch '81," a movie shot in the Ateneo campus (Aside: To the young 'uns, if you want to see what the school looked like then, go see this movie.), there was an initiation or rumble scene in the Loyola Gym. One guy had his head soaked in the toilet. Anyone who knew the state of the toilets there immediately said: "That actor is going to have a very short life."

Lastly, my most infamous college moment actually happened in the gym. I was stupid enough to propose to a girl (when proposing was still the thing to do) in the Loyola Center. It wasn't designed to happen there, it just happened. Anyway, we were up in the bleachers and I was a row below so I looked like I was kneeling. I guess I was the only one feeling inspired by the place since I ended up being date-less after that! Never heard the end of that one from my buddies.

Ah, to be young again -- and totally stupid!

Cheers, BK!
resurreccion
I remember when I was in college and we just got done with ROTC. Remember that freshmen and the sophomores have to go thru it(what a waste of time).

Well, we were having ROTC and the Ateneo High School and LaSalle Zobel game was going on that Saturday. So, we could hear all the cheers from outside the Loyola Gym. When we got done, we all started running in the gym, no one even payed. Ha ha, they couldn't stop around a thousand people at least to go in. Obviously the high school kids loved it too. We surrounded the whole 2nd level of the gym, including LaSalle's side, and just started cheering. I'll tell you what, those were the loudest times I've heard in the gym. Poor LaSalle, they lost their ability to cheer and the game too.

Anyone remember ghost hunting during grade school class nights? Man, the chapel area, the old music room, even the new (now old) building sure gave everyone the creeps!

remember when charlie valencia got locked up in the new (old) building after school hours and he had to jump from the second floor to get out? he broke his leg. actually, students suspected that he was rock climbing and did a myron torres (remember that grade school daredevil who was known as "stuntman" for his death defying leaps?).

anyone remember the baron brothers, raul and ronald (who played varsity ball for us), when they picked a fight with fred laureles?

whatever happened to joe abando's airplane? the one he was building in the art room at the basement of the grade 4 area. did it eventually take off?

mav, upperbox, jobai. those guys more or less near my batch, whatever happened to those old crush ng bayan teachers -- ms. rodriguez, ms. fajardo, ms. tobias? are they still teaching? does anyone remember rolly salazar's coaching huddle for the high school uaap track team. he cracked everyone up when everyone was huffing and puffing, and he say's in halting english (between gasps for air), "Okay, boys, heto strategy natin ... let's win!" Uh, okay. sort of reminds you of the time when Green Archer Mark Telan imitated the Chicago Bulls' Cliff Levingston by asking the DLRT team "What's the time?" Bwa ha ha. Telan, it's time for you to go back to school!

Chris Monfort memories:
"if you lose oxygen, you'll die for five minutes."
"if anyone is absent please say so."

Sammy Singson (Prac Arts teacher) memories:
"I have three sons and all of them are boys." BWA HA HA AT LEAST WE KNOW THEY'RE NOT GAY!!!
"The sun usually rises from the east." HMM. HOSS WOULD KNOW WHEN IT RISES FROM THE WEST. BWA HA HA

Rizal library hi-jinks:
One time, me and a classmate of mine fell asleep in the second floor sofa. One of the lib assistants woke us up and shooed us off with a very sarcastic "Sa susunod, magdala kayo ng unan ha?!" The following day, we did just that. Bwa ha ha

Is the rooftop of the chem lab still a favorite make out place? Bwa ha ha

Loyola Center Memories - No joke people, but it was actually the Loyola Center that made me choose Ateneo over La Salle! I actually remember back in the 70's when I took the entrance exam of both Ateneo and La Salle grade school. (o yan ha, may clue na kayo sa age ko!) I think I passed both coz I remeber my parents asking me where I wanted to study -- Ateneo or La Salle. Being a 6-7 year old, I really had no criteria for choosing. My line of thinking back then was "...mas ok yung Ateneo kasi may malaking eagle, eh ang La Salle may flying saucer!...".

Some years back, this was the topic of our discussion over dinner. I asked my mom if she remembered my reason for choosing Ateneo. She said yes, but revealed that I really had no choice...she would have forced me to go to Ateneo had I picked the other school.

Mas recent yata itong mga to! hehe! pero luma pa rin.

Loyola Memories:
1. during an MMBL game, hearing the crack of Paolo Isidro's leg when he broke it after trying too block an outside shot. there were only a few people watching actually kami lang sa band flight yung nandun during CMT.
2. the fight that almost broke out between Harlan Yu and David Nye with the father of Basti Lacson during an Ateneo-UP game. Harlan Yu mooned them and then sinigod nila. Muntik pa magkabatuhan ng chairs. We tried to pacify everyone (babble and band) then the frat boys of UP wanted to kick our asses cause they thought we were part of it.
3. one of my friends who was a manager of the seniors team had a lot to drink before barkering (?) during the ateneo la-slle exhibition game. he announced the first five of the two teams alternately, but kung atenista, sinisigaw nya, pag sa la salle mahina and walang gana! pag dating kay limpot, sabi lang nya "next, limpot."

dami pa pero yun na muna!

Ms. Rodriguez is still teaching. I bumped into someone who looked like her two weeks ago in the grade school. Man, a little older, but an ageless wonder nonetheless.

Ms. Fajardo married Atty. Ulan Sarmiento (who ran for QC vice mayor against Tito Sotto and recieved a royal ass-kicking). I guess his luck ran out when he married Ms. Fajardo. biggrin.gif

Ms. Tobias became Mrs. Madarang.

Ms. Tobias used to ride the CBL school buses, in fact, I still remember where her house was in Ma. Orosa st.

The highlight of the trip home was driving on those bumpy roads and watching her *ahem* assets jiggle. wink.gif

Ah, the wonders of high school and the combination of raging hormones! As Chris would so eloquently say, "Deep Breathely, deep breathely". biggrin.gif

How is Father Macayan? Damn, everyone was scared of him back in high school.

oh man, don't remind me of the showers and locker rooms there. unsanitary might be an understatement. i remember one semester i had PE class at the loyola center (weights training under Ilustrisimo) and we couldn't stand the showers there. terrible! i don't know if the facilities have improved since then.
Upper Box
The facilities have not improved. I ducked into the dressing room between my matches at the badminton tournament on the weekend of the 23rd. It's still a dungeon. No lights. Stinky toilets.

They say Boston Garden was really awful in its time and contributed to the defeat of many visiting teams. If this is the case, we should be winning every Loyola game we play.

Let me add my own note of nostalgia for Loyola Center. The Loyola men's room was when I first heard the voice of God, in the form of Joe Lipa. He was chewing out the UP Maroons at halftime of a UAAP game in the dressing room next door. His booming voice was sailing over the partition, something about Ronnie Magsanoc not executing the offense properly.

That's when I first heard the mysterious phrase "Anak ng pongala-ngala!" To this day I still don't know what it means, but it can't possibly mean anything pleasant.

I imagine I was lucky because I was in a toilet at the time Joe was delivering his rant. The players inside were less so; they were definitely pissing in their pants.

1) I remember this weird story about the crucifix in the Grade School chapel. For a while there was a rumour that it was miraculous since it was perspiring. Upon further investigation, it turned out the there was an aircon vent directed at it and moisture was merely condensing on it. End of miracle.

Does the grade school caf still have "unlimited rice" where the rice was put in a huge tupperware container on each table and you could have all you eat? Cheapest meal on campus. They must have lost a fortune on the college guys eating there.

2) Re: Ronald Baron - Haven't seen the guy in years. He actually came up in conversation last night. Strange. Maybe Ghostrider knows where he is.

3) Makeout places - According to my friends, rooftop of the Chem lab has been joined by the following notables: rooftop of Faura, rooftop of the Library (Aside: What's the deal with rooftops?), the parking lot outside LHS (yes, LHS), Colayco Hall dark room, Bellarmine Field and High School Field.

According to the source of the tripod joke, there are a lot of goings-on in parked cars in the College parking lots (Chinese and Japanese, in our time). That's why there's this ban on parking your car with the aircons on. Hindi na uso ang Beetle!

4) Fr. Macayan - Upon seeing a boy pick a leaf from a tree, suddenly pulls a strand of hair from the boy's head then says: "There. How did that feel?"

Actually, the condition of the showers in the College Covered Courts are just about the same. I remember showering there and there were all sorts of bugs, lizards and spiders walking around the floor. I was thinking: "Pucha, ma-tetetano ako nito!"

What's with Ateneo and showers?

Actually, meron pa isa... Upon seeing a boy pick a leaf from a tree, Mr. Macayan would shout at the boy, "Put that back!!!"...

Ah...I won't forget that old priest... He never wanted me to leave AHS, that why he's the reason why I took "masters" in AHS! Also, he'd usually call a student by the color of his shirt...I'm one of the 3 student from his class that called me by my last name...with that twang...

Back to the topic, I'll list my Loyola Center and other Ateneo memories later... basta, unang-una, dun kami naglalaro ng "shato" while waiting for our schoolbus back in grade school. Whatever happened to that manong vendor outside gate 2? I always bought text cards and baby rockets from that guy, plus shempre, that walang-kupas na manong traffic aid sa gate 2. I still see him though...sa gate 3 na nga lang, still doing his arm and hand movements while directing traffic. Ah...

Hey guys, does anyone know if students still steal st. ignatius' sword? Hehehe. Also, does anyone know when and how this 'tradition' of stealing the sword started? I've always wondered about this ever since this ORSEM guy mentioned it when I was a freshman in college. biggrin.gif
Upper Box
I think they did two things at the height of the sword-stealing pranks. Solution number one was to weld the sword really tight against the hands of the Ignatius statue. That didn't work. They then decided to use cheap wooden swords, easily replaceable next time someone pulls off the stunt. That worked. The more cost-effective solution, I think.
Bleachers King
Upperbox,
believe it or not, during the time they replaced St. Ignatius' bronze swords with wooden ones, someone still took it! The following day, one could see a bottle of gin and left over marijuana on the poor statue's hands! bwa ha ha Hmm. mga taga-ASSOC talaga! Oopss!

Fr. Macayan's tough hits:
1) While chatting with a classmate during recess, Fr. Macayan passed by our classroom. He noticed me sitting on the desk and angrily stormed inside and threatened me with a post. When I asked what my offense was, he icily replied, "for putting undue pressure on the desk." I'm a firm believer in human and animal rights, but furniture rights? Sheesh!

2) Said Fr. Macayan to a shrub, "Grow you stupid tree, grow! If you don't I'll sic the ants on you."

Chris Monfortisms Part 2:
"The most injury part is the knee."
"In football, the objective is to use your foot to kick the ball. Soccer, on the other hand, does not mean you have to play only in socks." BWA HA HA

Remember ...
- when Popoy chased a student who was sent to the prefect's office for acting like Popoy? BWA HA HA

- Mrs. De La Cruz, AKA Balbon, that high school Pinoy teacher who wore amazon shoes?

- our very own Bob Hope, Fr. Galdon

- Fr. Perez? Was he really psychic? Man, I've got my own twilight zone experience with him.

- English Honors prof, Eric Torres, also curator of the Art Gallery? He wasn't amused when an unknown student gifted him with deodorant one X'Mas.

- NatSci Prof, Norman Reyes, the College's Mr. Muscles who could bench press you if you were misbehaving in his class.

- watching those American football games between ASSOC and the Admi Kids? ASSOC lost that first game held at the College football field, 12-6 when Jaime Garchitorena was whistled for a penalty on a goal-and-one situation with time down to two seconds. Jay Gayoso scored ASSOC's lone TD. Soon after that, American football games were being played in the AHS, UP, and UST.

- firing an M-16 at Fort Bonifacio as part of your CMT training. How many of you stood up to fire away those five rounds ala Rambo in one short burst? I did.

yeah a friend of mine and i did it once (if the admin reads this i hope they don't take my diploma back). you need a minimum of 2 guys to pull it off - one to climb to the foot of the statue and the other one to boost him up and act as lookout. astig ka na talaga if you're able to pull it off by yourself. the sword is very long, i guess it's around 7 feet.

traditionally students steal the sword on graduation day, after they've gotten their diplomas and there's no more risk of getting expelled. the admin knows that someone will inevitably try to steal it on that day, but more often than it still gets stolen. i guess they became more tolerant after they replaced the swords w/ cheap wooden ones. i did it while in 3rd yr college

Loyola Center.
For those who've played on the court, you will know that like the Boston Celtics famed parquet floor, there are dead spots all around. I do know many an Ateneo coach would teach their players to force their opponents to the dead spots where almost always, it would result in a steal or turnover against the opponent. Got to try it out during the last ABL.

What about the college cafeteria? Is the food there better today? Or are there still soup-in-my-fly complaints?

Any caf stories? I remember the very first BBB tryouts ever held at the Caf. Watta riot! Are the tryouts still held there?

Wasn't Cora De Los Santos aka Cora the Barbarian?

Gigi De La Cruz was our algebra teacher in second year.

Ronald Baron, last I heard is in cagayan de oro. Will try to confirm with my buddies on his whereabouts.

Who could forget firing the m16s at fort bonifacio? Astig (to the point of being frightening) yun tunog when you have 40 armalites being fired simulteanously.
Bleachers King
Ghostrider,
I bumped into Ronald Baron in Rockwell before Game 3 and I think I saw him at the bonfire.

Gigi de la Cruz ... man, don't even get me started about her.

Got a Marlou Aquino Loyola Center story. While getting ready to jog out to the court for round robin lay-ups, Marlou ran to the john to heed nature's call. he didn't see a wet spot and slipped but not too badly. a lot of people saw him slip and when the Falcons trainer asked him wht the hell he was doing on the floor, Aquino replied, "Nag-se-stretch lang ako." Bwa ha ha

Mav,
yes, i do remember eating at the Grade School cafeteria because of the eat-all-you can sa rice. after awhile, pinagbawal na ang none grade school students doon.

Remember eating at Pampangueña, 1 order of inihaw na baboy then five orders of rice?

Did anyone play rollerball around the Grade 5 pergola? Man, that was both fun and scary!

biggrin.gif
Bleachers King
Ghostrider,
you're right, that was Cora de Los Santos.

When you think of the Ateneo, so many things come to mind (let's not talk about the quality of education or what an excellent school it is, ha?) ... the Blue Eagles, Loyola Center, the Blue Babble Battalion, the characters like Bobe Hope, Fr. OB, Popoy, Big Boy and Bigger Boy, ACIL, etc. But a couple of things that I'm so fond of and constantly love to talk about are the Himig Heswita songs of Fr. Manoling Francisco (who tutored me in Algeb when i was a chicken-legged frosh) and company, and Pagsy's Dulaang Sibol.

I have all the cassettes and a few CDs of the songs we sing in the Ateneo. Between my repeated playings of Dave Matthews, Ivy and Incubus, I listen to those Mass songs in moments of reflection or late at night.

Remember watching Cuerdas sa Sacadas in Sibol? I loved that especially the Tatlong Hari ng Cubao. Mhel Garrido was just awesome in that.

Any fave Sibol stuff?

Man, memories. I'm like Tom Hanks singing "The Way We Were" in Big.

1) The Sword - I once climbed that statue with two other guys so we could get our picture on the Loyola Lampoon. We did it in broad daylight and the security guards were thinking of arresting us or something. We looked pretty stupid since we had to stay on the statue for about 10 minutes posing and re-posing.

The sword's made out of wood and is quite long. It's not even attached so it's no big deal to remove. I was actually considering going there one night to take the sword. Procrastinated until one day near graduation time I noticed that the sword was gone. The security guys took it in anticipation of seniors running up to it during the graduation period. Ateneo would have paid a small fortune in wooden swords!

Legend has it that the first sword-taker was Dyords Javier. Anybody who knows him, please confirm the rumour.

2)Firing at Fort Bonifacio - I was one of those guys too! We went there with the UP cadets. Now, the UP ROTC program was more serious than ours and we were there just to "make-paputok." They were there for target practice.

The way it was laid out was that the Ateneo guys would fire on one side of the range while the UP guys were beside us on the other side. Now, the UP people had manila papers with them for their "target practice." Thing was, before everyone fired, the UP guys would have to run down the range and stick their targets/manila paper to the side of the cliff ( Aside: Yes, we were firing into a piece of rock.) then run back.

Thing is, while they were doing this, the Ateneo boys were already in their crouch and lock and loaded. When I saw the UP boys run, I had a weird thought: "Hmmmm, humans."

Anyway, I didn't do anything homicidal; but, unlike BK, I wanted to make the experience last so I squeezed out my 4 government-issued bullets one-by-one. Took a while but, as with everything in life done slowly, it was worth it.

3) Caf food - Oh man! Gourmet food! No wonder Ateneo has produced so many chefs.

First time I ate caf food, I ordered spaghetti. They gave me a spoon. I scooped up the spaghetti with my spoon then turned the spoon upside-down. Darned spaghetti was still stuck there -- even after I shook it!

4) College teacher lines -

a) Tejido - "Steady dating is social suicide."

cool.gif Ferriols - "Lundagin mo beybi!"

c) Leonard - "No. You can't borrow my books."

Man! Talk about walking down memory lane!

You know what? Listening to mass songs would be a great change of pace. I usually listen to Alessandro Safina, Josh Grobahn, Andrea Bocelli and Nina Simone. Do you know where I can get a copy of our mass songs?

I don't know if this qualifies as sibol, but I loved "Sinta" and I particularly remember the Tanghalan Ateneo presentation of "May Katwiran ang Katwiran" with Sato Ridad and the great Joey Ocampo. Wish I could take the young'uns one of these days to watch it.

One of the greatest gifts I received during my HS days was the opportunity to go down the hill and teach during TD. Though it was time consuming and frustrating, I found out later on life, I received infinitely more than what I gave.

However, I also realized then that teaching was not in the cards for me. biggrin.gif

maverick,
caf food. who needs ingredients when you can always use the indigenous creatures lurking and scurrying around the caf floors? i remember bombi sunga ordering some mami after a long day in some seminar in the auditorium. after a few slurps, he noticed a small roach paddling around the veggies. yuck!!!! to this day, when i remember that, it makes me want to barf!

we hated the caf food so much that we would try out one by one all the eateries and restaurants outside katipunan. when we tried them all out, we moved on to UP. when we got tired of it, we started going to binondo to eat sa may estero. and one time, we went up to tagaytay to have ourselves a mushroom burger or two. obviously, we had to cut class.

ah, the search for edible and good food.

ghostrider,
you can try Loyola House of Studies for the Bukas Palad, LAUDS, and Himig Heswita stuff. At least that's where I got my cassettes and CDs back then. But i do know they're available also in most music stores.

Yup, i loved Tulong Dunong. at first, i thought it was cool to be able to get out of the campus. but i did enjoy it immensely. in fact, three of my students became Ateneo scholars!

Guys and gals,
do you think Fr. Perez could really read minds? i'm not sure but there was this one instance when ms. tobias was pasing by and i was by my lonesome outside the classroom (our teacher was absent). as i was suddenly entertained by impure thoughts, i didn't notice Fr. Perez pass by too. he glared at me which scared the crap out of me. as he passed me, i thought about a bunch of expletives at which he turned back and glared at me even more. i scampered back inside the classroom totally forgetting ms. tobias.

Cant confirm that right now - but what I do remember is his college graduation "prank" which lead to his being banned from the campus for some time. (this bit of trivia will surely date me)

Hey guys, wazzup? long time no post for me.
There are so many memorable things that happened to me at the Loyola Center. To name a few:
1. I was grade 6 when i first saw a basketball game at the loyola center. was already peeking during the games then when i was in grade one but was not that interested with Basketball then.
2. The Ateneo-dlrt game that featured the BBB with girls!
3. The MMBl game that we beat DLSU.
4. the Ateneo B vs LSGH Game which we lost by 3 points. That game had Eric Reyes, Joey Guanio & Binky Favis battle Danny Francisco, Olsen Racela, Jonas Ferrer, & Peter Martin. After the game some batchm8s of mine were picking a fight with some of the greenies.
5. Ateneo vs DLSZ game of 1986 that saw Billy Del Rosario fall hard on the ground after DLSZ Guard Guevarra went under him when he jumped high in the air. Funny thing was that Danny F's brother got into a fight with one of the DLSz player's father. Years later i met a girl telling me na tatay pala niya iyong nakipag away. Nyenye small world.
6. The times we taught the students the cheers of the Ateneo, Gabby Dumlao was the one who wrote the cheers in manila papers and spelled " we stand on a hill" as the ALMA MATTER SONG!
7. We used to tell the students this spiel
"Did you know that Senator Raul Manglapus & Sen Tito Guingona were both Cheerleaders during their time? so dont be surprised if we become senators too in the future.
8. hey i remember the spirit of 76 and the team of 1987 play in an exhibition match. the 76 team was led by Steve Watson.
8. Also the Juniors & Seniors vs Freshmen vs. Sophomres challenge in 1990-91!Team F & S Were led by Richie Ticzon, Gabby Cui, Gabby Severino, Erwin Luna(did he play) while the other team was led by Olsen Racela, Paolo Isidro, Billy del Rosario & Rico Santiago. Olsen's team won ad we won the betting.
9. The Inter Org Basketball and Cheerleading competition. I remember IBA edging was that MEA or AEA in the finals. Di kno na maalala yung mga Orgs. basta alam ko IBA won because of the Free Throws of Bobby Manlulo.
10. Also, the best memories i had at the Loyola Center was watching the Blue Eagles practice almost everyday for four consecutive years. Kulang na lang kunin nila akong player. It was great seeing the team practice. that was something that you guys should have seen! smile.gif

Talk about trip down memory lane! This thread is just a bit different from the usual reminiscing, 'coz the teachers you're talking about where a lot older when I finally encountered them.

To think that Gigi de la Cruz and Mrs. Madarang were once upon a time crush ng bayan teachers. When I encountered them, they were more like just hot-mamas. . .

Crush ng bayan teachers during my time (at least those i remember): Ms. Ozaeta (now married I think), Ms. Suarez (art teacher), Ms. Tuason (now Dr. Tuason?), Ms. Zamora.

Eric Torres being given deodorant for Xmas! I don't want to comment about the way things are with him now. . .

Our class was brazen (or was it drunken) enough to try to steal St. Igantius sword too. But when one of us has climbed up the statue, we didn't anticipate that it would be grafted on his hands by thick wire! We would need wire cutters and pliers to get this one out.

We felt kinda bad, coz we had a "different plan", not wanting to be gaya-gaya with the dozens of attempts in the past. The plan was to transfer the sword to the hands of the Sacred Heart statue. Since, supposedly that's where the sword belongs, Jesus arms.

Of course, nobody then reminded us that St. Ignatius was really offering it to Our Lady (of Montserrat?)

Teach the children stories ...

1) When we were being taught the cheers at Loyola Center, when the head of the BBB then asked to get ready for Fabilioh, the entire batch got up for one resounding .. "La Salle bulok!!!" Sabi nga nung BBB Chief, "Alam na natin yun, but can we cheer Fabilioh?" O sige.

2) setting fire the chem lab. who hasn't gone through this? bwa ha ha

3) bribing the late doreen fernandez with, "ma'm can we discuss this over lunch?"

4) a story from my dad (who had Gary Lising for a classmate,
Priest: Lising, who signed the Magna Carta?
Lising: I was not the one, Father.
Priest: Lising, you're so dumb, where were you when God was giving out brains?
Lising: I was with you, Father.

Remember the time when sinugod ng mga taga-JASMS yung Ateneo to pick a fight? They were led by former Atenean Jay de la Fuente.

Remember that infamous rumble between Ateneo and UP in 1987 that had the security guards closing gates 2 and 3. car chases inside the campus. the Air Police battling the frat guys in Xavier Hall?

Remember taking the ACET then Alex Araneta was standing out in that mass of humanity because of his height. He was wearing a Hawaiian beach shirt.

Remember worrying whether you were gonna get a mark lower than 99+ in the NCEE coz it was said to be the avergae score of Ateneans taking that useless test.

Remember the very first BBB tryouts ever held in the college caf? you had people like people making jackasses out of themselves in front of very amused caf tambays. Remember when Paul Lee tried out? Bwa ha ha

Haha, Loyola Center!

My first encounter with the place was in high school. My PE teacher dragged us there to watch a girls' b-ball game between St. Scho (NO, MAV, I NEVER WENT TO POVEDA...no offense to those who did) and UST, I think. My friend and I were more interested in burning "DIE, *name of my crush*" into the football field biggrin.gif

Didn't really go back to LC until my second year in college, when I had PE 122 (womens' judo) at 8:30 AM Mondays and Wednesdays. Never took a shower there -- I must admit I never showered after PE (yes...ewwww ohmy.gif ) -- but in the case of PE 122 I had a good reason: I had Filipino in Berchmans at 9:30, so I had to schlep across the football fields and try to make it to class on time. Even though my teacher never marked me late because he knew I was coming from the gym, he liked to give quizzes first thing during the period and I think I always missed the earlier questions. Then on Fridays all my blockmates would gasp in mock-surprise because I was the first one in the classroom

The one and only time I ventured into the Loyola Center girls' locker room was after my PE 122 finals, and that was just to change clothes. The place looked a lot like the locker room at the St. Scho gym.

1) Re: the Dyords Javier prank - The version I heard of this prank goes something like: at graduation, the great Dyords shaved his head and wore a wig. When he got called, he went up on stage, got his diploma then took off his wig and bowed to reveal his shaved pate. Apparently, Fr. Cruz was not amused. I heard this version of the prank at my own graduation because some individual was threatening to reprise this. Thank god he got some sense into him!

2) Re: Caf food - Remember when they had these sizzling plates. They would charge you extra to make your food sizzling. However, all that meant was that they served the same crud on sizzling plates. So, for 5 bucks extra instead of mystery meat, you got "sizzling" mystery meat.

Man, the food in Ateneo then sucked so much that joints like Pampanguena, Anne's and Frankie's were in business for a very long time.

Friend of mine even included "a rain of cafeteria food" as one of the 7 plagues of Egypt!

3) Re: Renovating the Loyola Center - Seriously, whatever renovation we do on Loyola Center should preserve the Blue Eagle symbol on the facade.

A few months back, like our friend 5Foot Carrot (who is NOT from Poveda), I was trawling through GA.net and they had this whole thread about the renovation of their old gym on the Taft campus. Apparently, when they tore down the old structure, they also tore down this green archer statue/bas relief that they used to have in the doorway of their gym (Aside: I even remember seeing this statue/bas relief on their gym wall). Some of their old-timers regretted getting the news of the loss of the symbol because that green archer was very dear to them and represented so many things. They even called that the "Green Archer Icon" or something of that sort.

I'd hate to be in a similar position years from now when they finally get around to refurbishing the Loyola Center.

4) Re: Tito Guingona - I remember that Guingona's campaign jingle was lifted from one of the Ateneo fight songs (which was in turn based on a US military march [the 'Caisson Song', I think). Anyway, the Ateneo song was:

"With a shout, with a song
We will help the boys along..."

Guingona transformed this into:

"Guingona, Guingona
Let's go na with Guingona..."

5) Re: the Sword of St. Ignatius - Anybody out there with a stolen sword? I'll bet there are a number of them floating out there. For once, I'd like to see ONE stolen sword. Any culprits out there? Anonimity and free beers assured.

Maverick,
funny you should mention the stolen sword. i did ask a friend if he still has his (he does). when i asked if he is willing to show it off, he told me its okay but he said it might come at the cost of my life (bwa ha ha). baka bawiin daw ang diploma. i think i'll have to get him drunk first.

i'm all for refurbishing Loyola Center. Upperbox is right, it is a dungeon. notice how the Blue Eagles use to emerge not from the dugout but the old weights room at the top. Laos kasi yung dressing rooms sa baba. But i think its all part of the Jesuits' ploy to piss off (pun intended) the opponents so they couldn't wait to get out of there so they'd justplay in a huff. but so much for that tactic when we fielded weak teams.

by the way, i was talking with a La sallite friend and he was saying that it was DLRT's Xmas gift to ADMU, the UAAP championship so that we'd rediscover the meaning of the season. I retorted that, it's obvious there's something screwy with their education coz when the meaning of Christmas means winning and enjoying the fruits of a UAAP championship. He said, generous lang daw sila. So i came back with, bakit kami rin naman, di ba. Rico shared his elbow with Sta. Maria and Sonny did the same with his foot. Who said we weren't generous.

Final word on that elbow. Sta. Maria deserved it. Even more. For those seated near the court, you will have noticed that he gave out at least 6 elbows prior to the HIT. Then those sour grapes cry foul? During Game 3, notice how after each foul of LA on Cool Cash, may iniiwan na siko kay LA. Man, where's Gene Afable, Jet Nieto, Haj Jeongco, and Ricky Fariñas when you need them.

Whoa. Can't say I can relate to everything you've written here (have no idea who those teachers are), but I do have some "fond" memories of Loyola Center. Before MLSC was built, Loyola was our home. Nakaka-miss din yung bulok na weights room and dirty CR's! biggrin.gif

By the way, about the showers. I took a lot of showers there in my time... Nakaka-takot nga lang because we heard that some people used to videotape girls in the shower rooms  Especially the women's football team, kasi there were a lot of pretty girls on the squad. Never really found out if this was true, but by the time I was told, we had already moved to Moro... rolleyes.gif

loyola center sure is hot as hell. on a summer day, you can fry an egg on the court's surface. the lighting is rather bad and the ventilation can be suffocating. but its a great gym.
i always find myself imagining how the great blue eagles of yore would rain jumpers on their hapless opponents there. did we win any ncaa championships on our home floor or were all the championship games held at rizal memorial or araneta?
anyone?

out of boredom, I decided to watch a vcd of the 1996 2nd round game of ateneo vs dlsu today. that year, ateneo was struggling to get into the final 4 while dlsu was at the top of the standings. it had been quite a while since ateneo beat la salle and everyone was expecting them to lose again. well…things didn’t exactly turn out that way. the gritty first 5 was composed of verayo, cui, brandon sison, pinzon, and arespacochaga and they were up against a powerhouse dlsu team that had telan, aldeguer, bautista, roca, and orfrecio. the blue eagles were fired up from the get-go and raced to a 14-1 lead thanks to the red-hot shooting of verayo and sison. they just couldn’t miss!! by mid-1st half, the score was 34-8 and the ballgame was effectively over. the final score was 80-55, it was a massacre. the team shot 16 (yes, 16) of 33 from 3-pt range (it was an all-time high for a uaap team then according to joaqui trillo). suffice to say, it was a great way to end the drought for ateneo.

I get goosebumps every time I watch a replay of this game. I watched that game in the bleachers section and all throughout the game, the crowd was delirious!! we all couldn’t believe what we were seeing on the court and on the scoreboard. it was probably the greatest shooting display I have ever seen in my life from an ateneo squad. that was the last admu-dlsu game I saw as a student and it’s something I will never forget. ahh…memories. biggrin.gif

hey guys, on the topic of memories, what are your most treasured Blue Eagles memorabilia?

i don't have my 80s championship shirts anymore. sayang. i should have kept them.

from the 80s, all i have are my old guidons and newspaper clippings and the cardboard cutout of "the Finger." thanks to pizza guy and gurl, now i have vcds of the championships as well. those betamaxes just don't want to play anymore.

lately, i have all the newspaper clippings for season 65, the tickets from the Final Four onwards (Bantay Bata and Champions League). the ballooons, fans, flags, and "We Believe" and "It's Our Time" placards from the last two seasons. got a few of their appearances on various print publications as well. Do you know I saved last year's game 3 ticket? I kept it as a memento and was thinking of giving it to rico sometime prior to the recent finals to serve as extra motivation. never got around to giving it. but its still part of my collection.

man, i'm too old for this.

i don't know about the video-taping but i do know that there is a way to peep into the ladies room. many pep squads from visiting schools fell prey to the prying eagle eyes... hehehe... right rico?

for a long time, di ko masyado binig-deal yon. pero last time i saw that, kinilabutan ako... yon pala matagal kong di makikita. sana makita ko ulit yon. galing.

Whoa sobrang dami ako memories!

Loyola center used to be our favorite place to watch grade schoolers fight (dun sa lanai behind the bleachers). We even placed bets and even made those silly kids fight so we can make money. I remember we were in grade seven and we let some grade four students rumble. Sabong galore. The funny thing is one kid even shouted talo ako sa baho mo!

As for basketball rumbles there was this incident where Pido and Jet Nieto got into a fight. Pido punched Jet near the exit and a fracas ensued. The father of Jet pulled out his gun and fired it in the air just to stop the melee. My bro-in-law also mentioned countless violent rumbles during the NCAA days. There was a fight between Letran and Ateneo which reached all the way to Cervini. (Having a car in the 70's was bad since you had to replace your windshield every year.)

Oh yes... we used to sneak in during UAAP games for free when we used to pass through the gate where they used to have the karate sessions near the ping pong tables. We couldn't afford to spend 20 pesos on tickets then. Atenista kasi kuripot.
------

As for other memories, you guys should start a new thread on Chris Monfort. He was my coach during my varsity days in football.

Here are some of his inspiring quotes:

1. Play with your heart wholeheartedly!
2. Courage is measured through dedication like this athlete who was running around the oval and was hit by a javelin. He died! Now... he is dead. (NO S H I T.)
3. You should play like Moses! You go through the defenders and part it like the red sea. AMEN BROTHER!
4. If you do not want to win for yourself then win it for ME. pagod na ako matalo.... please?

Rest easy Chris.

1) Re: Freud - Hmmm. Thread seems to have exploded on the topic of repressed hormone-charged memories involving certain teachers. Before this thread becomes the subject of Freudian analysis, maybe it's best to save those stories for another 14 Beers.

2) Re: Stolen sword - Anyway, BK, get your friend to bring that sword. I want to actually see a stolen one. Don't worry. No one among us is a snitch (right?) and once Ateneo has given you its diploma, it can't get it back. So, tell your friend to bring that sword at the next 14 Beers. His drinks are on me.

3) Re: Ateneo artifacts - Remember those old gate passes they used to issue for your car? Am not talking about the new ones which feture some building on campus and come in these neat colors. Am referring to the old oblong ones (shaped like an American football) which you stuck on your windshield so you could bring a car into campus. Darn things were so big, you could spot an Atenean's car a mile away -- which is exactly how Beda or Letran boys could spot your car for a beating. Anyway, I just saw a car with one of those old stickers. Beat up old Combi, the quintessential 70's Ateneo mode of transport! (Aside: I wonder how the owner of that old Combi never got around to tearing off a sticker which is at least 20 years old!)

Based on the pictures of championship games of yore, I don't think any of the NCAA championships of Ateneo were ever won in the Loyola Center. I t was usually Rizal Memorial for the 50's and 60's and Araneta in the 70's. I guess the championship had to take place in neutral territory.

I also heard about that rumble we had with Letran in the 60's. Apparently, it was so bad that they had to close Gate 2 to keep the Letranites out. That didn't work though as the Letranistas scaled the fence and the gate to do battle with the Atenistas. Apparently, the Letran "HQ" for that rumble was the old Caltex gas station across the street (Do you remember this gas station? To the young 'uns, that's where McDOnald's is now.) and they would just keep pouring in from across the road. Incorrigible, these boys!

By the way, on an off-topic topic:

I attended the Ateneo-UST baseball game last Saturday (which we unfortunately lost). Anyway, after the game, I decided to catch a bit of the next game which was between La Salle and Adamson. The La Salle cheering squad was there and they did their cheers after each inning.

After one inning, they started doing OUR "8-beat" and cheering "Go La Salle" to it. They stole our cheer! I wanted to go up to them and say: "Look, guys, we don't mind you cheering; but, that's our cheer. Leave it alone. Have some dignity. If you're going to rip off some other school's cheer, choose a school that's not your rival."
