Ateneo de Manila University held archrival and defending champion De La Salle University to a 2-2 stalemate, enabling University of the East to grab the early lead in the men’s division of the 68th University Athletic Association of the Philippines chess tournament on Sunday at the UE Briefing Room in Manila.

Only back-to-back Most Valuable Player John Paul Gomez, playing Board 1 for the Green Archers, won his match against Roberto Mabagos in 33 moves of an English Opening.

Ronald Nonles won over La Salle’s Aries Hernandez on Board 3 while Board 2 players Jayson Salubre of La Salle and Carl Espallardo of Ateneo and Board 4 players Emmanuel Emperado of La Salle and Leonard Chua of Ateneo drew their matches.

The Red Warriors, led by top board player Mark Oliver Ingcap, blanked National University to gain an early 4-0 lead in Round 1.

University of the Philippines defeated University of Santo Tomas, 3-1, after Board 3 and 4 players Bernardo Templo and Omar Bagalacsa dismissed their respective rivals.

Templo beat Ramon Manon-Og in 41 moves of a Dutch Defense while Bagalacsa outwitted Jan Vincent Paragua, younger brother of International Master Mark Paragua.

Far Eastern University edged Adamson University, 2.5-1.5 behind Lyndon Sombikon and Ron Lionel Marcaida, who beat Isaac Atayde and Conrado Diaz, respectively, on the middle boards.

Adamson’s Board 1 Juan Valeros stunned FEU’s Mark Anthony Yabut in 24 moves of a Slav Opening, but teammate Tristan Soriano and James Bulicatin wound up with a draw on Board 4.

In the women’s division, both University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle posted 3-1 victories against respective opponents to share the lead.

UST crushed National University, as only Madelaine Abeleda failed to win for the Tigresses after yielding to Jackqueline Yaset on Board 2 in 30 moves of Caro Kann.

Board 3 player Jennifer Advincula took the only loss for the Lady Archers after she bowed to Cherrylane Guiang of Far Eastern University in 42 moves of Sicilian Defense.

University of the East and Ateneo de Manila ended up tied at 2-2 while defending champion University of the Philippines drew a bye in the opening day of the tournament.
