What sports would you want to see in the UAAP?

I say:

- Flag football. (Ok rin kung totoong American football with all the violence. Imagine an Ateneo-La Salle game.) Pwede ring rugby.
- Wrestling
- Pool
- Polo cool.gif
- Rowing
- Karting
- Gymnastics
- Synchronized Swimming
- Surfing/Wakeboarding
- Other extreme sports

amateur boxing, with headgear and all. the UAAP already has judo and taekwondo, so i think amateur boxing would be a natural addition.

also pool, particularly 9-ball, as was suggested by atenean_blooded.

Agree ako sa boxing and wrestling.

The problem with American football is that it's very equipment-intensive. I think the schools will not be able to scrape together and outfit an entire football team.

Anyway, this is a good idea for a thread topic. smile.gif

With fighting sexy girls.

Cage matches.

And Joe Lipa as our very own Vince McMahon. biggrin.gif

However, I am sure he can pull off Vinny Mac's trademark "Youuuuu're fiiiiiiirrrrred-ah!" - with matching "pongalangala" pa! laugh.gif

Hehe, had to say that. OK, back to the topic.

It will be nice to have amateur boxing in the UAAP. Meron dati sa NCAA yan where Ateneo performed credibly. Ateneo was a natural breeding ground for boxing, a school of boys mentored by Irish-American New York (Bronx) based and trained Jesuits. Bronx is where the brand EVERLAST is based just to get proper bearings. Kids who grew up in the bronx only knew how to play hoops, box or both. I even remember one jesuit priest I had as a professor for TH 151, Fr. McMahon. He came from the NY province and was heading to Xavier in Cagayan de Oro but had a one sem stopover at Loyola. He was around 5'10 - 5'11", 200 lbs easy, had the body of a bear. During first day of classes, looked at me during roll call and asked me how much I weigh. I said: "200lbs father", he immediately said "Good, we are in the same weight class, maybe we can spar a few rounds". No thanks. He probably would have killed me in under one minute.

I tried to talk to some university officials about introducing club level boxing at the Ateneo. Got mixed responses. The people running Moro were a bit apprehensive and said that the university has a policy against boxing. They said I could try to come up with a proposal and submit it to the university for approval. The people at the Loyola Center were at the opposite end of the spectrum and were just to eager to get it starteed. They even pointed me to the right person to talk to. I just got too busy and wasn't able to pursue it properly. I'll probably get it done one of these days when my schedule allows it.

i definitely support amateur boxing in the UAAP!!! i bet this will generate great fan following if given the proper backing. i'd love to see dual meets between ateneo and la salle smile.gif

i was going to say mud wrestling, but i thought of women's basketball, and i realized that we would be at a distinct disadvantage, compared to other schools.

Actually Ateneo won't be in a disadvantage. In mud wrestling, the real winners would be the men watching regardless of the outcome.

Hahahaha.

This brings back memories of how some spectators, regardless of school, would cheer our Lady Booters on, especially if it was raining and the field was muddy. biggrin.gif

Along that line of thinking, Ateneo now has a women's beach volleyball team. They wear 2-pc speedos whenever they play. Saw a pic of them in the newspapers last weekend when they played in a game along Baywalk. Would like to see that sport in the UAAP someday.

Mud wrestling and beach volleyball offer a healthy balance between the beauty of form and function in the female physique, as opposed to simply smiling for pictures and answering questions. Men get excited when they see the opposite gender trying to break barriers and compete on the same terms while retaining the appealing aspects of their femininity. smile.gif

I also wish we'd play against actual, biological, natural-born women in women's basketball and all other events.

Easy on the comments about the other schools' women's teams. Ateneo's female athletes are lovely, feminine girls, but we fans don't have to make fun of the other schools to see that.

Besides, it's not nice. Regardless of looks or sexual orientation, I'm sure that the girls from other schools feel very hurt when they hear comments like that being made about them.

Which comments were making fun of girls from other schools?

Better yet, ala-Bengal Bouts of Notre Dame ang format. Students sign up for the boxing tournament and are trained for 6 months before letting them go at it. Let's see what they're really made off when they're inside a 20' x 20' enclosed ring, alone, with nowhere to run and with another guy at the other end with a mission to introduce him to the business end of his 10 oz. Cleto Reyes boxing gloves.

Problema sa boxing is the purely siubjective nature of the scoring, pwera lang pag knockout talaga.

bluebruiser90
The scoring is now computerized. 3 of 5 judges should press a switch within a second of each other if they deem that a punch is of the scoring variety for the punch to register as a point.

Kaya medyo mahirap na nga ng konti mandaya unless talagang ayaw mag score nung judges. But there's still room for biased judging as we have seen in recent international competitions like the Olympics, Asian or even in the SEA games. The system doesn't prevent biased judging, since the scores are televised as they are scored, the biased judging is just more pronounced. Real time kasing nakikitang dinadaya ka.

In anycase, biased judging aside, the boxers know who got the upperhand in a fight as the scores can't hide the busted lips, the puffy face or the body aches.

Why not include bowling. This is one sport that we Filipinos can excell in. We can also onclude billiards.

IIRC, Ateneo has a bowling team, and in my time I believe they were pretty good. So if the sport makes it to the UAAP, Ateneo will be competitive.
