Hey IRONMAN how did the tri go? Did you finish (I hope you did!)? I heard Wilfred Uytengsu and David (Owner of David's salon) joined. Did you get to see their bikes? Ano set-up nila? I bet Uytengsu was on "costs more than your car" bike.

Hey! Sorry for the delay.
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!! I finished 23rd out of 50!....15 hours. Not bad for a newbie. This is only my second triathlon! It was so tough, especially since I wasn't 100% during the race. I got the flu two weeks before and got a relapse a week before. But, as I said....ONE BIG FIGHT!
I know of three other Ateneans who finished. Nonoy Jopson finished second, JJ San Pascual finished sixth and Larry Ocampo finished 28th.
David just sponsored the event. He didn't join. Fred finished over 16 hours. His bike was a soft ride, but I didn't really get to see the whole set-up.
IRONMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude congratulations! Finishing that nasty event is quite a feat. Knowing it is just your second triathlon makes it even sweeter.
BTW, what was your average speed during the bike leg? What are the people who doubted you saying now???
*didn't know Nonoy Jopson was an Atenean. Go Ateneo!

Thanks man! Don't know my ave. speed but I did the 180k in about 6 hours 25 mins. That should make my ave around 28km/h. You really have to hold back in the bike because you still have a marathon to run dude.
Nonoy kicks ass! He finished 11:35 I think. You can't imagine how fast that is!
Sayang because he got two flats! Ang malas because he had tubulars!

Ei. Sorry to butt in but just wanted to say congratulations...second triathlon. galing. I'm starting to be a triathlon fan kasi.
Nonoy Jopson is the cousin of Loyola Mountaineers' President (Redg Plopinio). Redg kicks ass, too.
Are you a member of Loyola Mountaineers?

Thanks man! Nope, I'm not a member. Triathlon is a fast growing sport, and it's awesome! Even just finishing a sprint distance gives you a high..........what more the Ironman!!! Try and get into it. You have more than enough time to prepare for next year. I did it with three months training......
2 of the to 6 finishers in the Ironman were from Ateneo!

28 kph for 180 kms before a 42.2 k run is simply awesome. Do you know Sean Lim? He's pretty strong and he told me that 100 kms is hard enough...what more 180 kms! Then ou run a marathon after! Ironman, you truly deserve your forum ID!
3 Ateneans among the finishers. Now those are real athletes!

Speaking of tubulars..didn't Nonoy have a SAG? Goes to show that clincher is the way to go. Some pro cycling teams use clinchers..in fact, a clincher won the Paris-Roubaix a couple of years ago.

Thanks man. Yup I know Sean. He's a really nice guy. He watched and kept cheering me on during the run. You should've been there. The atmosphere was something else. I'm still suffering from Ironman fever! What an experience!
I'm joining every year from now on......if they continue with the full ironman. The organizers lost money this year, and they aren't sure of organizing another one next year. Super sayang if they don't. So many sponsors backed out last minute kasi.
I'm really new to biking, so I don't really know the diff between clinchers and tubulars. All I know is that tubulars are supposed to be less prone to flats.....which is why it was strange Nonoy got two flats.
Correction. There were four Ateneans who finished! Three others....plus me!
ONE BIG FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about that! Try the short triathlons first. You don't need to train much for those. 750m swim, 22k bike, 6k run. Those races are so much fun also. That Elicia Domingo is awesome! She's a 46 year old mother of three.......who finished the IRONMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will, clinchers have a tube inside the pushes the beands of the tire into the rim...hence the name "clincher". Tubulars, OTOH, are like clinchers but with the tube INSIDE the tire. The tire is then sewn up to seal the tube inside, hence the name "sew-up". When flatting, though, tubulars are difficult to mount, plus you need to glue them and let the glue dry. Clinchers, just need a new tube after flatting...and with a little practice, a flat can be fixed in like 3 minutes.
Ms. Softball: If you have any questions on setting up your bike, feel fre to ask us. Mas may alam si Ironman sa tri setup. I'm just a roadie and our positions on the bikes may have some differences especially if you plan to use an aerobar. Good luck! See you at Cartimar (cyclist heaven).

Hehe, good for you Ms. Softball.
I'm assuming na mountain bike yung bike ng friend mo. For a brand new roadbike, 30,000 is almost always the minimum amount you can expect to spend. Pero for a MTB, magandang maganda na yung makukuha mo for 30k. Ano ba hanap mo? Tri-bike, road bike o MTB? Ask Ironman for good deals.....sobrang good deal yung nakuha niya for his Giant TCR Team.
Wag lang comfort bike bilhin mo! hehe

I had a great deal of experience sa biking nung sa Urban Jungle at hassle talaga mag-bike sa public roads and highways! actually, yung ang waterloo ko. I started practicing my biking mga 3 days before the contest proper, tapos my last biking practice or my last biking [lang] was when I was a kid (sa BMX pa!) kaya I had to put in a lot of effort to regain balance on the bike and to even control it.

The key to enjoying a bike ride is to avoid vehicular traffic! That's why most roadies ride in Amarri or the Fort, while most MTBers ride on closed trails. If you want to get the hang of riding first, dun ka muna sa residential area ninyo or sa Fort. Just don't block the fast cyclists, and you'll be fine. Dun sa Fort ako madalas, masarap yung trangkuhan doon! There are also "winner take all" races every Sunday. Class A, B, and C. Yung class C, medyo mabilis na, easy to keep pace, but difficult to win. B is even harder, batak na mga kumakarera sa B eh.
Ironman, kung mapapasipa ka sa Fort, tell me so you can meet up with us sa may Essensa loop.

dude! I thought you were from Alabang! Hassle masyado to drive over to Alabang just to ride when the Fort is just 5 minutes away! Anyway, post ka na lang dito if you want to hook up for a ride sa Fort. There are two loops there, the oval (paikot ikot lang, medyo flat) and the Essensa loop (2 short climbs that we sprint). Weekdays, nasa Essensa kami, tapos Sundays either Essensa muna tapos oval, or deretso oval. Ave. speeds vary from 32-34 kph sa Essensa and sa oval mababa na yung 35 kph...averages around 37 depending on who is driving the pace. Ooof! Masakit. Minsan si Totoy Plaza (ex natl team) and tumatrangko, that's when super consistent yung speed. It'll be easy to spot you sa Fort, konti lang ang naka full-tri bike dun.
Cheers!

Looks like it's just been the 3 of you in this thread! It's been along time since the last post, but the topic caught my attention. I don't even know if you guys will be visiting the thread anytime soon. First of all, congrats to IRONMAN! Whatta feat! I'm interested in pursuing triathlon as a sport as well. Where can I get info/updates regarding the next sprint triathlons? Of course, I want to start with small, baby steps! It's one thing to want to or to plan to take up the triathlon, but it's totally another thing to actually know where to get info about it. Yung local news muna para closer to home and attainable. thanks for you reply!

Virengue, I tried biking in the Fort once. I ended up winning the bente bente! It was really dangerous though. There was a huge pile up right behind me! We were around 40-50 riders in that small loop filled with man holes! I'm never joining that race again.
