guys, what can u say about our school cheer? comments, any?

for me, im proud of our school & im cheering for ateneo with all my heart during uaap but i admit, i just observed that our school cheer isnt that lively anymore & parang wala nang variation & impact. if youll compare sa de la salle, they have this "wave" & "beat ateneo." sa atin, the usual, "one big fight", "go ateneo", et al... plus clapping the hands. parang ganun- ganun na lang palagi. im not saying na gayahin natin ang sa kabila but i hope meron tayong new cheers, meron tayong panama sa wave nila, for instance. suggestion too, ibalik ang warmth sa pagchi- cheer. ( this is also the suggestion of one poster in pex named "xeksx")

"An open letter to all Ateneans"

I spent 16 years in The Ateneo so yes, you may tag me as true blue. I've had the chance to play in the UAAP back in high school so yes, you may call me a basketball fanatic. I've seen the ups and downs of Ateneo basketball. From the glorious days of D.Francisco and J.Reyes to the oh so loooong final four drought, down to the Rico V. era when we finally made it to the final four and re-captured the crown. I may not have seen it all but I can say I've seen a lot. And one thing that I have seen through all the games is the presence of that vintage Ateneo spirit when we came in and watched the games live.

Ah yes. "One Big Fight" never failed to shed shivers up my spine. It didn't matter who we were facing. The people who watched the games made their present felt. The BBB, as always, carried the crowd from start to end. And then we had the epic Ateneo-Lasalle encounters. Whew! That really made not just the players, but also the crowd bring their A-game. History would show the barrage of gimmicks each school has made to liven up the fans. Indeed, it didn't matter if we were few or plenty. "One Big Fight" was kicking it!!! Until recent times...

I have not missed an Ateneo-Lasalle game for 3 years now so I just find it disturbing how our crowd's bite has been "different" lately. Dating back to the latter part of last year, I noticed that the chants have been a little softer, the cheers a little lesser, and the swagger a little tamer, especially during the ADMU-DLSU encounters. It seems that a lot of us go there to experience the "event". Being the SIXTH MAN seems to have taken a backseat. I myself have a younger brother in 4th HS and I've seen the suttle change in him. It's like a lot of us are not fully there all the time.

Last night's loss to Lasalle made it seem more evident. I was seated right down the middle area so I had a good glimpse of how both crowds behaved. I had waited for this gameday for several months and I was oozing with anticipation. I was looking forward to shouting "Go Ateneo" when the first drum roll started. And shout I did. Funny though, I could actually "hear" myself shout. "One Big Fight" was also heard a couple of times but it lacked the same sting. But what really got to me was when I could barely here singing of the Alma Mater. I know that its hard to cheer when your team is being beat badly. I know it's hard to shout at the top of your lungs all throughout the game. But singing the school song with heart always made me proud. My head was highest and my husky voice was loudest whenever it was time to sing.

Of course it REALLY helps when the players give us a reason to cheer louder. But having been a player before myself, I'd say that it also helps if the crowd gives the players a reason to play a little bit harder.

You guys will have to pardon me, but I'm old-school with these things. Witnessing what happened last night made me realize that I am also guilty at times of "just being there". I admit, it's so hard to give it your all, especially in a losing situation (or spurt). But I have never questioned the heart of the blue eagle. Never will I say that I love my school less.

And so I am appealing to all the Ateneans out there to just keep the fire burning. Of course, the Ateneo faithful is still there and will ALWAYS be there. I also do recognize that a lot of PEXers are so passionate about their school just by reading their posts. My hats off to you guys. If there's any way you can share your passion outside PEX, with all the high flying eagles out there, then truly, the SIXTH MAN spirit is working in you. After all, win or lose it's the school we choose. And more than anything else, WE MEAN IT.

Want to do a wave?

How... jologs.

Seriously speaking, our cheers are FINE.

Just bring back ANIMO ATENEO.
yungha
yup our cheers are fine. they're the finest in the land. our cheers are original, historic, majestic, inspiring. it's the way we cheer that needs improvement. if the present crop of students had a little bit more fire and passion we could cheer two-four-six-eight-who-do-we-appreciate or some other baduy cheer and we'd still intimidate the hell out of the opposing gallery.

babble, good job. wag lang sana puro reactionary ang cheering natin - let's lead. at dapat mas malakas pa ang cheering at greater effort kung tambak tayo.

la salle's cheers are commercial and unoriginal. they sounded impressive in the first game because they won resoundingly. pag natatalo sila, lalo na kung tambak, their gallery is pathetic. even their supposedly vaunted drums and pep squad tumatahimik. at least yung sa atin pumapalo pa kahit tambak na. and a good portion of their gallery leaves before singing the alma mater song.

if we start copying from la salle as the thread starter impliedly suggested, that would be pretty darn ironic - we could reasonably say that the current la salle pep squad is an offspring of the babble thanks to 2 former babble members who resurrected organized cheering in dlsu in the 80s.

You pertaining to JC Cino, AA Aguirre, and Andrew Mangila who all transferred to DLSU in college in 86-87 and became leaders of the DLSU Pep Squad? They were not former BB members. They just wanted to get back at Ateneo for not accepting them for college.
true.blue
Our cheers are fine. We could use a new chant to supplement our Ateneo woh woh woh go and fight (which dates back to the late 60s), but given the state of our band and the support they need from us, let's just concentrate in getting back the passion in cheering the present cheers.

- the BBB is doing the right thing. Maintain eye contact with the spectators. Talk to them and encourage them to cheer. A pep talk every now and then, during lulls, always helps. An inspiring cheerleader who introduces himself by name and connects with the crowd never fails to be infectious.

- There are a number of old alumni as well as current crop of grade school and high school students who deserve a kick in the butt for not having the passion to cheer. During our time, we asked the principal to convene all high school students for a reminder on the importance of cheering and to get a good number of volunteers to sit together as core group in the bleachers section (now the upper a and b sections at araneta) to deliver solid cheers. The game against FEU was a sample of our worst day in terms of cheering. And it didn't help that a number of Adamson students were scattered among us in the upper a and b sections, thus diffusing the cheering potential. It is no secret that cheering is contagious, both postively and negatively. So if you don't see or hear a seatmate cheering, you tend to lose your passion to cheer yourself.

- can the BBB please practice singing the Ateneo go and fight chant in the right key and melody? Once a cheerleader starts the chant in an awful key, or worse, with the wrong melody line, it's hard for the crowd to follow. Same with the alma mater song.
ForeverBlue
ei I lost my voice during that game against FEU. From where I was, I was the only cherring my heart out.
bluestorck
same here..even if i sat at the feu side. that didnt stop me from cheering. i wonder if the babble could compress our supporters in UA and UB pag nasa araneta. so that more people would be encouraged to cheer.
miggzs
in a way, i agree with what the letter said. our crowd just doesnt seem as loud as it was before. i dont know why though.

(i think some of the comments here should be in the blue babble threads..
here's a reply to one of those comments:
its a little hard to sing in the right key when you're starting to lose your voice from yelling all those other cheers and egging everyone to cheer. )
Mhel_Garrido
During the 99 to 2001 season i can still remember how the DLSU cheering improved drastically. That is becoz they have been in the finals for a long period of time and Ateneo was left w/ so so teams and only a couple of friends watching in the stands.

I think that the Ateneo crowd, given the right lead or what we say "diskarte" sa pag cheer will out do the DLSU crowd anytime anyday and twice on sundays!

The point is, sometimes and sama ng diskarte ng pag call ng cheers.
Humahabol tayo tapos tatawag ng Fabilioh or halikinu just for the sake of calling a cheer. Well there is nothing wrong with these two cheers, its just that sometimes
to get the crowd going the BBB should capitalize on offensive outbursts, defensive
gems and that stuff because that is something that gets the players pumped up.

Hearing "one big fight" or "get that ball" or the intro of the Go Ateneo cheers pumps up the players and gives them extra adrenaline to exceed their expectations.

In turn that really gets the crowd going kahit na tambak tayo.
But then again it is better said than done. Acutally it will all depend on who
among the BBB members are situated in difficult parts of the Araneta. Difficult being the part which have apathetic atenean spectators rather than ateneans who cheer. Well, lets just support our teams this coming season and goodlck to the BBB.
Apocrypha
I hope this isn't too off-topic, but can someone explain how the dance numbers the other schools perform at halftime can be considered cheering? If you saw the halftime performances of all 4 schools that played last Sunday, you'll know what I mean. Ibang-iba yung ginawa ng BBB sa ginawa ng iba. Isn't leading your crowd in cheering and getting them involved what it's all about? It was like watching a noontime variety show. Sorry kung napalayo sa usapan.

Just bring back ANIMO ATENEO.

YEAH JUST BRING BACK ANIMO ATENEO! WE STARTED THE ANIMO SPIRIT AND WE SHOULD REJUVENATE IT ESPECIALLY AGAINST DLRT, SHOW THEM WHO TRULY OWNS THE ANIMO TRADITION!!!

JUST A SUGGESTION:

SInce the Ateneo is once an NCAA founder i think it would be great to incorporate "School-Acronym Spell- Trademark Cheer" Like that of C-S-J-L Arriba Letran, or the M-I-T Fight Viva Mapua well as for us it would go like this:

BBB: A-D-M-U!
6TH MAN: A-D-M-U!
BBB: READY! 1-2!
A-
D-
M-
U-
A-D-M-U ANIMO ATENEO!!!
CLAP- CLAP-, CLAP CLAP, CLAP-CLAP.. A!
CLAP- CLAP-, CLAP CLAP, CLAP-CLAP.. D!
CLAP- CLAP-, CLAP CLAP, CLAP-CLAP.. M!
CLAP- CLAP-, CLAP CLAP, CLAP-CLAP.. U!
A-
D-
M-
U-
A-D-M-U ANIMO ATENEO!!!

I guess this would be a cool way of bringing back the true animo spirit and a good way of instilling it as the Ateneo way! And since the Blu Babble Brass Band is about to be formed, they could form great accompaniments/intro to this cheer to pump up the crowd!!!

Just a suggestion guys... watch some of the ncaa games and see how it is cheered, after all, the Ateneo once founded the NCAA, Cheering and the true ANIMO SPIRIT!

ANIMO ATENEO!!! ONE BIG FIGHT!!!
