JC INTAL showed up for his much-awaited debut and helped Harbour Centre massacre Kettle Korn-UST, 85-66, yesterday in the PBL Silver Cup at the University of Santo Tomas gym.
Intal conspired with Chico Lanete and Reed Juntilla in a telling third quarter surge that keyed the Port Masters’ second win in three games.
Harbour Centre kept the reigning UAAP titlists UST Growling Tigers winless in three matches and Intal’s entry into the team gave coach Jorge Gallent optimism for the days ahead.
“He adapted right away,” Gallent said of Intal, who debuted with nine points and six assists. “For him to become the team leader, he has to show it. He has to earn the respect of his teammates. But he’s a complete package.”
Lanete shot eight of his 14 points in the closing minutes and had four steals.
Harbour Centre tied the Sista Super Sealers and Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala in second spot, just a game behind the league-leading Hapee-PCU Teeth Masters’ 3-0 card.
Earlier, the TeleTech Titans recovered from a near-meltdown in the fourth-quarter to escape with a 79-70 win over the Mail and More Comets.
The Titans turned to Eugene Tan and Francis Mercado in the closing minutes to register their first win in two games, the same mark now held by the Comets.
Coach Jerry Codiñera said the Titans are still adapting to a new system he dubs as the “Black Storm.”
“It’s a major adjustment,” said Codiñera. “There are no hand signals, so it’s a strange system to the players.”
Intal, a vital cog in Ateneo de Manila University’s runner-up finish to UST in the UAAP, fouled out in his first game for the Port Masters, but not after helping the team to a 68-52 lead, with 6:49 remaining.
