Blue and White
From the 2005 Ateneo de Manila executive planner

The Ateneo has adopted the colors of Our Lady as its own school colors. The school colors are therefore signs of the Ateneo’s devotion to Mary and its commitment to become, like her, a constantly true and faithful servant of the Lord.

Marian blue, ultramarine, is the purest, most brilliant, and most enduring of blues. It is also the rarest and most expensive of pigments, and exceeds gold in value. The color must be extracted in tiny amounts from crushed lapis lazuli, a gem. Medieval artists therefore reserved blue for the robes of the Virgin and the Child Jesus. Mary is also Queen of Heaven and Star of the Sea, and appropriately, her color is also the color of sky and water. Sky blue symbolizes distance, divinity, and dreams; Marine blue, mystery, depth, intimacy. In Mary’s blue mantle, Heaven and Earth, depth and height, the divine and the human come together. No wonder then that blue is the color of faith, peace, and commitment. No wonder then, that the Ateneo has made her Lady’s blue its own.

White is also a color of Mary, conceived without sin and clothed with the sun. It is at once colorless and yet bears the entire spectrum of color. White signifies silence, an emptiness and space that is pregnant with possibility. It is also the color of openness, of truth, of purity, and of hope. In a sense, white is the color of ‘yes.' And it is a color of the Ateneo, because, like Mary, we hope to surrender ourselves to God, so that He may do His work through ours, and so that His will may be made flesh in our lives.

Dude, I'm moving this to the Locker Room forum. It can apply to all other Ateneo sports anyway.

Question, though - how would you know whether the team will be wearing their blue or white uniforms?

hmmm, i think it depends on proximity. because the ateneo campus is geographically closer to araneta coliseum than the DLSU campus, we can consider ourselves to be the home team, so we wear the light color. by the same token, if the event were to be held in rizal memorial, DLSU gets to wear the light-colored uniform owing to the nearness of its campus to the said venue. i don't know if this applies to exhibition matches, though.

I think this issue has been tackled before.Since most of the other teams have white as their light jersey, white can be claimed by any of our opponents. It was informally decided in years past that we shall wear predominantly blue clothing. It was thought that we look solid and united with one blue colored gallery.

my earlier post was in reply to 5footcarrot's query whether the blue eagles will be donning the blue or white jerseys. there's no question though that supporters will wear their respective school colors--marian blue for us, kelly green for la salle.

Maybe the teams alternate their light and dark colored uniforms. Kaso lang hindi ko pa rin alam kung alin yung mag-uumpisa nung sequence.

They don't sequencially alternate. If we wear white against DLSU on July 10, we wear dark sa 2nd round.

I think wearing predominantly blue is more unified.

From the published schedule, you can find out who is wearing the light or dark jersey for that game. Teams on the left wear their light jersey and teams on the right wear their dark jersey. On July 10 its DLSU vs ADMU so dark jersey tayo. Also those wearing the light jersey are on the green side and the dark jersey on the red side-tip yan for those sourcing their tickets other than the Ateneo university athletics office. smile.gif

See you all on the 10th!
