One of the sport where the Ateneo community strongly applauded on a while ago in the Cheer Rally.

Anyway, the chances for a crown in the Women's Division is very big indeed. As I said, the ADMU team is very intact. Their training with some RP Team Players helped them. When they played in the Home and Away League, they weren't that good. In fact, you wouldn't even see Soriano quicking, Taganas doing her trademark attack, Bello setting hardworkingly and Veluz digging like hell. In the Shakey's V-League, you would often see that these four players including Charlie Tan are the standouts for the Ateneo team. Of course, there's still the RP Team Players who makes for the Ateneo team as well but considering that they are just teenagers and college, they can level up with the professionals of La Salle and UST already. Special mention to Soriano who now blocks superbly.

The Men's Team is now developing different strategies and techniques. They have new tall and big recruits as attackers and blockers. Expect them to beat teams like UE, NU and UST already for they are capable of doing those things come UAAP Season 68. Our team will be the Best Blocking Team come July.

The Juniors Team I hope will again steal the crown from the UE Paiges. They just placed 2nd last year against UE. But their new players and recruits will show that Ateneo can be also excellent in recruiting for volleyball players. The Ateneo Juniors' plays are not of last year wherein they don't have teamwork. They would often do exhibition shots as compared to UE who really is defensive but not that too offensive. Our only blocker that scores a big margin is De Joya. He is actually an all around player. He can attack like hell and block superbly. Expect him to be part of the RP Team in the future for his splendid performance.

It will be a nice season indeed especially for the Women's and Men's. They placed 7th and 8th last season with a rookie-laden team in both division but right now, both are ready to fight it out in the Final Four and they are hungry for wins.

GOOD LUCK TO OUR VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS!

GO ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT!

Women's Volleyball: Ready to Hold Serve
UAAP Preview

A 3-11 record and seventh place team standing doesn’t sound impressive at all by any standard. But when you consider that last season’s team was led mostly by a bunch of sophomores and that they lost a number of close matches, then this is a case where the numbers don’t even begin to tell the whole story.

“We thought we had a good team and that we’d be able to compete with La Salle, UST, FEU, and UE,” recalls Patty Taganas. “But after getting our first win (against NU), we just couldn’t find our groove.”

“It was disappointing for all of us,” adds Stephanie Veluz, whose boundless energy and contagious enthusiasm egged the team to continuously give their all. “Nakaka-down yung mga pagkatalo namin pero hindi ako pwedeng bumigay kasi sino pa ang mag-e-encourage sa team? Masakit, yes. Minsan iiyak ako pagkatapos ng game, but Coach Louie (Gepuela) told us that it was all part of the learning experience.”

Trust Louie Gepuela, who played for Ateneo’s only two champion men’s volleyball teams (NCAA ’75-’76), to find a silver lining behind the dark cloud of a lost season: “Well, for one thing, there were no more easy games against us. On the other hand, the opposition couldn’t sneak in any aces against us.” To illustrate the promise the team held, they upended perennial powerhouse FEU for their second win. And with added exposure to more high-level competition in the Shakey’s V-League, the team figures it will do better this time around.

This Season 68, the volleybelles’ attack will be anchored by the hard-hitting duo of Taganas and Charo Soriano, who will be ably supported by Apol Del Puerto and Starr Cabuco. But make no mistake, what will spell the difference this year, aside from defense, is the game of the winsome Karla Bello. Bello is the team’s only tosser or set-up person. If she can’t get the ball to her teammates on the wing, then forget about scoring. “There is no one to backstop her this year,” confides Gepuela who’s banking on the third year social science student to raise the level of her game. “We won’t win at all if Karla has a poor game.” Gepuela certainly knows a thing or two about tossing as he used to set up Jimmy Javier, Levi Encinas, and Rasty Rastrullo - his power-spiking teammates - during Ateneo’s golden age of volleyball in the 70s.

“Naku, pressure,” laughs Karla. “Basta focus lang tayo.”

And focusing on the upcoming campaign is what Taganas, who took the disappointing previous season personally, is doing now. During the summer, she opted not to enroll for any classes and instead spent countless hours trying to hone her game. “She put aside quite a few things to concentrate on the season ahead and to lead the team by example,” says assistant coach Pete Custodio, himself a multi-titled volleyball coach for the Air Force and for Ateneo. “Patty feels that the time is right for the team to win.” With the other schools losing several players to graduation (including defending champion DLSU), the Ateneo volleybelles are more or less intact, losing only Stella Baltao and Twinkle Berdan.

Now with the core of the team a year wiser and more mature, hopefully the Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Team will come out aces.

The Keyplayers we have are Patti Taganas and Charo Soriano. I have seen these girls improve. Charo doesn't quick before but now sobrang galing na niya and she can't block that much dati. Ngayon she can block the likes of RP Team players like Macatangay of Adamson who plays for SSC-R, Pimentel of UST and Carolino of Letran who plays for La Salle. Patti's spikes aren't that hard before in the Home and Away League lagi lang over and nasasalo pa ng team. Hehe. Ngayon, sobrang down the line at pumapasok na. She plays with heart na. Bihira siya masupalpal because she uses her head. She can easily think where to put the ball.

Karla Bello also improved from being a real setter. She now helps Charo into quicking.

I hope the Ateneo team avoids the miscommunication errors. It's one thing the team can't get rid of. If we improve on that, we will surely be a champion team.
