over-bearing parents? steep academic standards? tunnel vision view on success?
geez, i just read another suicide over academics in ateneo. this time, it involves miriam d-santiago's son. over constitutional law? good lord! i don't know if compassion or a final smack on the cadaver's forehead is in order. i'm out of line. of course i feel bad about the dude but this be all and end all mentality on school work has got to go. may God have mercy on his soul. i do feel that the psycho-mom has something to do with this---OR ateneo just drives people nuts sometimes. while we're at it, can someone make a suicide count (due to academics) for ateneo. i bet we have a lion's share on that (that is, if you see any bragging rights in that). anyway, i'd rather be homicidal than suicidal--especailly over Bull Sh!t academics.

hey the guy's dead. the least we could do is to respect him and not talk about his reasons for doing that or blaming it on someone or something. sure it does sound unusual or weird or maybe even petty to kill yourself because of academics, but i'm sure the guy had more reasons than just that. for all we know, he's a manic-depressive, and because of that and all other things that happened to him (and might have happened to him), he had just about enough. everyone has his or her own way of dealing with problems, just as everyone's unique in every aspect of life. he's not you. so he might have viewed the issue differently from how you do now. and maybe for him, that was what he thought would be the solution. instead of judging the person or his reason or doing headcounts of academically-related suicide cases, let's just offer our prayers for the guy and respect him. after all, he is dead.

no offense meant, man. walang personalan. i just think this kind of thread is quite inappropriate.

peace.

yeah, the suicide over academic failure line, seems like the "angle" that papers like the inquirer take. if one thinks about it, it seems like a convenient explanation for the media to take since they hardly know the guy. if he had just broken up with his girlfriend, they would have put that in too (?)

agree with Flick, it could just as likely be that he was manic-depressive. don't want to speculate anymore about the cause of death. it's sad enough when someone so young dies.

Its just that a life was just wasted for a stupid reasons or whatever was his problem. Lets us just say a prayer and hope that other people would consider other alternatives in life than taking their own.

Yeah. Flick's right. We shouldn't be talking about these things here. We have to respect the person's death and privacy. Let's just offer our prayers to him, and to all those who did the same. (?)

No offense meant okay,,

i've the luck/bad luck to have been born to a lawyer-parent. quite simply, WALA KANG PANALO. i grew up always on the losing end of each argument.

oh well, can't say i didn't get anything out of that. these days, my wife and mother-in-law say "wala naman talaga kaming panalo sa 'yo, eh."
quilava
mac_bolan00, you're a lawyer?
mac_bolan00
nope. i meant i picked up a lot of things from our lawyer-father. this just got worse as we grew old. now i also have one lawyer-brother, two lawyer sisters-in-law and all those shysters i consider friends.

Hi! I just want to share that his mom isn't psycho...long before all the hoopla, she KNEW she was somehow detrimental to her children because of the indirect pressure imposed on them just because she is who she is.

I just feel for the mom. No parent should outlive his/her child. It's just wrong.

just my take on the topic =)

Of course this is no longer a current issue--but I wanna comment on the thread title, so bear with me. Haha!

In truth, there came a time in my life that I did consider taking my own life as the only answer to my dilemma over school matters. No I did not have any failing grades. I simply didn't expect a grade that according to my father was "a peabrain's achievement." Yes, we must admit that being an Atenean have its own pressures. Especially if we have parents that are expecting too much from us. My father is one of them.

Sometimes they won't speak. And it would be harder to bear than if they just shout and curse at your stupidity. Some students with parents such as mine have instilled in their minds that they should do well--thus making it hard to accept anything less than the best..

stash the rope or gun or whatever method you prefer. there'll be far better reasons to kill yourself AFTER college.
