Just bumping up this thread in case someone can answer owenD's question.

Also, I'd like to know more about who will be on the Ateneo swim team this year, and our prospects for the season smile.gif

I have a teammate now who is a freshie in Ateneo and part of the swim team. A recruit from La Salle Zobel, Jonas Ramos. Good thing you guys were able to get him because he's really fast, besides he wouldn't be a scholar if he wasn't.

I'll ask him what are the mechanics on how to join and who to go to. He told me their training is everyday including Saturdays, but by August, since the UAAP swimming is nearing Sundays are included as well.

owenD, I suggest as early as now you train already, brush up on your swimming. Especially mastering the four strokes and endurance. If swimming is your passion... whatever happens Don't give up.

owenD has no time to go to the forums because of studies and swimming. I am very proud to say that he's my brother! smile.gif Haha. He does 250 laps straight without fail (saka lang siya magba-bubbles then resume ulit), and is now developing his speed. Everyday ata nagtetrain yan! tongue.gif

I hope he gets in. He's 6 feet tall, and hopefully becomes an asset once he enters Ateneo.

I read somewhere in the internet that there's a relatively new training method in swimming that calls for less laps and more strength work simulating the motions of each stroke outside the pool and less laps but higher intensity speed training in the pool. Unless of course his events are the 400 and 1500 free.

I know that method. The best place to do this training method is in the gym. These are exercises that replicate a swimmers actions in the water as closely as possible. These are the cable rotation pulls, rear pulls, swiss ball body pulls, and barbell squat jumps. These traing method focuses on using the right muscles in a related mechanical movement to provide optimum training benefit. laugh.gif

I've been doing this kind of training since last month. Nakakabad-trip nga lang sa gym kasi sobrang init! But this method is surely effective.

Ok, you're such a dork. laugh.gif

Seriously Owen, for more information on the Ateneo's swimming program, PM cackler. (He's not a swimmer, but he could orient you on the right stuff)

At ipasa mo ang ACET mo!

Part ako ng training team ng Swim team ng Ateneo this year. Training is everyday, kami usually 3-6 pero once papalapit na ang UAAP season, the training team takes a break to give the competing team more space. Everyday including saturdays kasi. Plus, even if you're already in the training team, it may take a long while before you get elevated to the Competing team. I think may land training din sila sa Bagio kapag breaks.

Basically all you need is dedication, hard work and you should be really really determined to get better and eventually you'll be able to compete. Pero mukhang determined ka naman Owen, base sa mga sinasabi ng Ate mo. So good luck. Sana makita kita sa pool next year! Baka training team pa rin ako nun...hahaha...sana naman hindi na.

Ateneo makes big splash in UAAP

The Philippine Star 10/02/2005

Michaelmars Danila took most-valuable-player and rookie-of-the-year honors at the forefront of Ateneo’s third place finish in the UAAP swimming championships held Sept. 22-25 at the Rizal Memorial pool.

Danila won six gold medals and broke one UAAP mark to show the way for the Ateneans, who finished third overall in their first year in the UAAP swimming competition. College sophomore Raem Puno had a double-gold performance.

Freshman Rozelle Louise Sarmiento earned the only gold — in the 800m freestyle — for the ladies team.

The Ateneo juniors swimming team took the championship with 11-6-7 gold-silver-bronze medals. Theodoro Sandico (3 golds — rookie of the year), Adel Barlisan (3 golds), Michael Contreras (3 golds — including relay) and Sean Paul Tan (1 gold) spearheaded the juniors to victory, defeating defending champion La Salle. The team is coached by Edward Awad Borja.

hello everyone,

i'm a high school senior and interested to make it to the college men's team next year. i was just wondering kung every kelan ang training and at what time of the year ang season.

we train everyday after class...it's usually 4 o'clock start your stretching then 4:30 bihis and swimming na. then we end around 6:30 to 7 (depends kung focus day or not). if you have classes or meetings or exams during that time, you can swim at an earlier time kasabay ng grade school--3:30 (if you're available or don't have classes during that time, that is). but since freshmen naman does have fixed schedules pa, you'll have no problem sa classes mo..mga siguro yung minsanang required plays and talks lang yung makaka-abala sa sked mo. smile.gif or unless tipong BS ME ka at ang Math mo ay mga 5 ang class, like our one of our teammate. tongue.gif

then on saturdays, we train ng 6 am to around 8 or 8:30. 6 ang stretching then 6:30 baba. saturdays are usually the heaviest training days. then we don't have sundays pagmalayo pa ang season but when august enters, we do have sundays na. same time like saturdays, but hindi sa ateneo pool. we train sa amoranto. smile.gif

strict attendance during uaap season. you should attend at least 80% of the training days during the whole month and bawal din late unless may class ka that ended late or basta dapat valid excuse. hmm.. pero don't worry. after uaap season, okay na. di na masyado strict ang attendance and you can pig off your food na. hahaha! and pagmalapit na uaap..like one week to go...suppper dali na ng training. hahaha! biggrin.gif

uaap season is usually during the third week of september--four days. thursday to sunday. suuper saya pag uaap..ang hassle lang kasi 2 weeks after uaap, finals na. so yung week actually na wala ka is considered ALL-HELL-BREAKS-LOOSE-WEEK. but it's all good. aral nalang habang asa rizal. wink.gif

and yeah, meron ding Baguio Swim Camp every summer..mga march ata. haven't been to one though, kasi may na ako pumasok ng team this year. hehe. smile.gif but my teammates say it's a whole week of nothing but swimming. hahaha! biggrin.gif tapos of course, there's still training during the summer. masmatagal na. mga 4 to 4:30 rin yung start pero minsan natatapos na ng mga 8. then ang alam ko may morning din eh..not sure. di ko rin naabutan yun.. haha! tongue.gif i reckon mga 6:30 rin ang morning swim..so bale, twice a day ang training during summers.

may land trainings rin, of course. may scheduled moro rehabs and sometimes ipapajog kami sa oval. usually, pagsummer and pag malayo pa uaap nito. but again, pagmalapit na ang uaap, swimming talaga ang main focus..minsanan nalang yung land. basta, you'll know naman eh..the team managers will text you if may change of plans or sked.

pero tama si charlatan...pinaka-importante ay...ipasa mo ACET mo. wink.gif okai???

there you have it. any more questions? smile.gif i do hope to see you next year! smile.gif

btw, what team ka galing?

At ipasa mo ang ACET mo!

My grade school daughter is a member of a swimming team based in ULTRA (I know it has been renamed but our generation still refers to it by its old name) and has a teammate who now swims for the Ateneo. This young man graduated from another exclusive boys' high school, PASSED THE ACET and is now in his second semester in a pre-Law course. I was elated that he decided to go to the Ateneo instead of any of the other universities that were actively recruiting him because, frankly, i couldn't imagine him anywhere else.

What is impressive about this young man aside from his humble demeanor and obviously good breeding (sorry to be so non-PC) is that even if he wasn't a nationally-ranked swimmer, going to the Ateneo was not a strictly conditional option. He's consistently performed excellently academically and his family can well afford to send him to the Ateneo without an athlethic scholarship. This young man has his head on straight, thanks to a coach who gives more to the sport than takes from it, a tireless mother who puts the welfare of his son ahead of hers and a doting grandmother who knows when to give her grandson a gentle push.

Like most freshmen he's still adjusting to college life but nobody is worried that he won't get the hang of it very soon. What is most important is that he fully understands that HE'S AN ATENEAN WHO COMPETES IN SWIMMING, NOT A SWIMMER WHO HAPENS TO STUDY IN THE ATENEO. Everybody knows a good joke or two about there being too many lawyers in the world, but this young man will truly be an asset to the profession.

He's off to the SEA Games today with two other Ateneo teammates to represent the country. He's bringing along his books and notes because he knows that after the games, the Filipino people will thank him for his best effort and his Math teacher will welcome him back to school with a long test.

yii.. i know who you're talking about. smile.gif funny rin 'coz coincidentally, he's my blockmate rin in math. sayang lang he still trains in ultra than in ateneo..so less time siya with the team. but nonetheless, he's really good. a flyer at heart. smile.gif

pray that he and the rest of team philippines bag the gold, alright? smile.gif
