i had this random thought: ever notice how stephon marbury improved all the NBA teams he's been after he left?
there's a unique pinoy term to describe people like stephon--sila yung may "balat sa pwet," hence the title thread.
as such, this thread seeks to recognize the dubious "achievements" of those who, in one way or another, helped their respective athletic clubs with their absence or after they've departed.
fire away, people!

Another recipient of the BSP Award would be Don Mattingly, AKA "Donnie Baseball", who starred on first base for the New York Yankees during the 1980s.
Donnie Baseball was a great hitter, a Gold Glove fielder, an All-Star player, and was also wildly popular with Yankees fans. Despite being hobbled by injuries in the 1990s, he persevered and kept on playing.
He finally made it to the post-season in 1995. Unfortunately, the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs by the Seattle Mariners. Donnie Baseball retired that season with 2,153 hits, 222 home runs, 1,099 RBI and a .307 average, and without ever having played in or won a World Series.
The New York Yankees won the World Series the very next year, marking the beginning of the Bronx Bombers' late '90s title streak.

jun limpot was the main man of sta. lucia from 1992-2000. in 2001, he went to ginebra. that year, sta. lucia won its only PBA title with coach norman at the helm. in 2004, he was traded to purefoods. that year, ginebra won two titles after he left

This may be a bit of a stretch given that his effect on the team was not as immediate, but another candidate for the BSP Award is hockey player Bernie Nicholls.
Nicholls began his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings, but it wasn't until after he was traded (during the 1989-90 season) that the Kings made it to the Stanley Cup finals.
From the Kings, he moved on to the New York Rangers, who won the Stanley Cup only (again) after Bernie had been traded. Coincidentally, the Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup finals by beating Nicholls' team at the time, the New Jersey Devils.
A few weeks after the Rangers eliminated the Devils from the playoffs, Nicholls signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Devils won the Stanley Cup the very next season.

Dunno about the Great One. It seems that after leading the Edmonton Oilers to 4 consecutive Stanley Cups in the early 80's, Wayne Gretzky seemed to have lost his Midas touch. Even though he nosed out Mario Lemieux for the scoring title in the 91-92 season (I think

), the team he was traded to, Los Angeles Kings never got to the finals (that is until 94-95, where they lost to the Canadiens). Gretz was then traded to the New York Rangers (after just lacing up a few games for the ST. Louis Blues, alongside Brett Hull), to be reunited with "The Captain" Mark Messier. Alas, the Mess and Gretz show lasted for just a season, where NYR was booted out in the second playoff series. Gretzky led the Rangers in points for much of his tenure there. But NYR barely got to the playoffs (if ever). He never got to drink in another Cup (although he won as All Star MVP in his last season).

'92-'93 season yon. The New Jersey Devils won the Cup in '94-'95 sans Bernie Nicholls.
And I think in the case of the teams that Gretz played on after the Oilers, he wasn't the only one with the BSP. The Kings, Blues and Rangers continued to have difficulties in the post-season - if they made it to the playoffs at all - even after the guy was traded.

going back to sta. lucia, it's becoming clearer with each victory (six straight and counting) that it's marlou aquino who's helped the ballclub most--by not suiting up!!! mag-retire ka na marlou, pakiusap lang.

Gomen, 5ftCarrot san.

I guess my menories fail me more than I'd like to believe.

Although am I right to remember that Wayne had been in the minus side (+/-) for most of the seasons late in his career ? It seems that although he still racks up those assists, the opposing team scores well also when he is on ice. It has been said that the Great One lost a coupla steps in speed. Whereas he would just slip and seep through checks, now he was caught a like poor insect on the fly swatter.
But I do wish I caught Wayne in his prime.

I'm not too sure about this, but how about Virgil Villavicencio? Didn't he lead the Eaglets to consecutive runner-up finishes before taking on the DLSU seniors and leading them to runner-up finishes as well?
And after he left both teams, they went on to win it all. But I may be mistaken about the Eaglets part. Not really sure if he indeed failed to win it all.

May 19 2005, 03:25 PM
/\ After Villavicencio left, the Archers still had a couple of bridesmaid finishes under Jong Uichico, so that kind of negates your argument.
Maybe the award should go to Mark Telan instead because after his five-year stint in DLSU, the Archers finally won a championship. Notice also that since '98 no one has used jersey #13 anymore

elton brand was originally drafted by the clippers in 1998. not long after, he was traded to the bulls and was a mainstay for quite a spell. he returned to the clippers for the 2004-2005 season and waddayaknow, the bulls made it back to the playoffs since the jordan era.

a student manager for team B noted that since last year, our hardcore eagles have not won any game at the san beda gym. this year, their two wins against UP and st. benilde happened at FEU gym. can a venue be in the running for BSP "honors?" pwede na rin siguro

now that liverpool scored a stunning upset over clear favorite AC milan in the 2005 UEFA finals, i hereby give the next BSP award to former liverpool striker michael owen, who is now with galacticos. salamat sa pag-alis mo, nakuha ng liverpool ang kampeonato!

The thought just crossed my mind: What if "buenas" players like Robert Horry and John Salley, who won NBA rings with different teams almost immediately after joining those teams, both found themselves in a team with a "salot" coach like Yturri.
Who would have the stronger Kung Fu ?
