PSC and Ateneo joined together to form one team. 3/4 of the players are from Ateneo and only 4 are from Philippine Sports Comission team.
Blue Ronin
Wow. When will the season start ? If we're hosting 4 players from PSC, does it mean that each team is allowed to have 4 "imports" ?
jancarlo
Yeah I think.

You can see them on IBC 13 starting May 1 everyday, 8 PM.

Opening Games are DLSU vs. UST kaya mahirap kagad makapunta sa sobrang daming tao.
Blue Ronin
Do we have the first round schedules at the least ? So would we be playing out of the Blue Eagle Gym ?
jancarlo
I think Games would be in Ultra and Blue Eagle Gym.

if the volleyball team is anything like the volleyball teams of my college days, then be afraid. be very afraid.

but seriously, even if we find our team losing a game, we can always have fun reading the big, bold fighting words proudly displayed on other schools' banners. whether the words are correctly spelled for all the tv audience to see, is another matter altogether.

now that's priceless.
jancarlo
Well, I'll give you Coach Lou Gepuela's number. I just talked to his son a while ago. Sige, call me now. 3-Way ko kayo para masagot niya yung mga tanong niyo.

We can beat DLSU. Why? Based from the Home and Away League, they scared La Salle and made it to a 5-setter. What more if we have the some of the 1993 SEAGAMES Champions? UST can't get revenge because Pimentel, Balse, De Leon and Co Yu Kang will not be there anymore. DLSU will also miss the presence of Penetrante, Penano and the Letranistang Carolino Sister. They are only left with Saet, Santos and Hernandez.

For Ateneo, we have Taganas, Baltao and Limgenco. Our team is good in defense, what we have to practice is our offense. Tan is still undecided if she can be allowed to play as Libero for our team. For she will be in the RP Team for the SEAGAMES. We have a strong chance to be in the Final Four.

To some Alumni: Please try to find time to watch the V-League since some of the games would be in Blue Eagle Gym and Ultra.
Eagle_Eyes
well goodluck to the team.

i'm sure this experience can only help our players in the long run, especially come uaap time where historically, we haven't done quite well.

good luck lady eagles.. wink.gif

Post the sched so that people are informed. I will also try to catch some snapshots during the games. I covered one v-ball game last UAAP season, and now I regret not having covered more.

GO ATENEO!

Paparazzi, links to the photos ha!

It would really mean A LOT to me and Wonderboy.

For other people, the teams who are joining are and their rankings are:

1) DLSU - defending champions
2) UST
3) Letran
4) Lyceum
5) FEU
6) SSC
7) ADMU
8) PCU
9) UE (although not yet sure)

May 1
2 PM - Opening
3 PM - DLSU vs. UST
5 PM - FEU vs. SSC

I think that's the schedule on the opening game. basta sure ako sa DLSU vs. UST kaya marami kagad taong pupunta.
joescoundrel
Is Bridgett Inoferio still with UST?
jancarlo
I haven't seen her siguro wala na. biggrin.gif

"Penetrante won't be in the V-League, she just decided a few days ago that she will be in RP Team together with Coach Ramil de Jesus.

Why Ateneo did place 7th place? They have a rookie-laden team and yes, they were mostly beaten into a 5-setter game namely, ADU, UP, FEU and UE then if we won all the 5th set of those games then we could have been in the final four with a 10-4 standing. Think of it, Lyceum, Letran, SSC and FEU are the teams which Ateneo CAN and MIGHT beat this coming V-League together with some 1993 RP Team Players. La Salle, UST and PCU are the ones who can challenge Ateneo, but believe me, Ateneo can win once or more of those 6 matches. This coming UAAP, many alumni are expecting to be in the final four since teams like UE and FEU have become weaker. Miracles can still happen like in Basketball, before we were dominating it, then a couple of years we have been in 7th place then came 1998 we improved a lot. Like in Volleyball, in 1980's we also dominated UAAP then came 1995 when our team is stuck in the bottom four. Who know? Maybe after ten years, ADMu can place even just 4th, 3rd or more. Hehe.

And oh, the ones who will play in the V-League are the ones who will play for UAAP and Shakey's V-League. But an addition of Pano for UST might increase their strength although still strong. DLSU is also strong. Hehe. Yes I admit, I have a crush on Illa Santos."

didnt baltao graduate already?
jancarlo
Even though Baltao graduated, she can still play for V-League.
jancarlo
Mary Jean Balse, the MVP of UST is planning to join our team since she studied in Ateneo de Davao and I think played in Ateneo de Manila too. Many players want to join our team. I don't know why. Hehe. smile.gif

What is meant by "guest player" ?
jancarlo
Guest Players are Alumnae. Reinforcements came from other schools.

Guest Players are unlimited to a school's line-up in the V-League. Reinforcement is limited to 2 per school. But, Ateneo's been allowed to have 4 since it's partnering with Philippine Sports Comission Lady Legend Spikers and their coach.

Pag pumasok tayo sa Final Four, pupunta kaya kayo? Hehe...Kaming high school students, for sure maraming pupunta kasi maraming may crush sa players ng La Salle and Ateneo. Hehe.
Blue Ronin
laugh.gif Maybe on weekends. Medyo hectic pag weekdays eh. Although it would help if the games are scheduled primetime in the evening and if it would be held at the BEG. biggrin.gif

so you mean Prochina graduated from Ateneo?
jancarlo
Di ko lam, basta naman nag-aral ka sa Ateneo, Guest Player or Alumna ka na. In the case of Prochina, she graduated from Ateneo de Davao in High School. Yes, Ateneo de Davao is I think the most superior in volleyball in Mindanao. So I don't know if Prochina graduated or not, but she's an alumna.

Keeping the team spirit
by Paula T. Abiog and Mark R. Marte

It is a game loved by everyone. From the crazy fanaticism for Brazilian sensation Leila Barros to the streets around the metro on a sunny afternoon, volleyball has become the most-watched and most-played sport in the country next only to basketball. But for Blue and Lady Spikers team captains Welwynne Ramos (IV AB Eco) and Twinkle Berdan (IV BS Psy), there is more to the sport than seeing foreign volleyball players sashay their way on the playing court.

Starting young. Twinkle got her first taste of the sport at age nine by playing volleyball with her neighbors.

She started to take her game seriously in grade five when she joined her school’s intramurals and eventually made it into the varsity team.

Welwynne, on the other hand, started playing volleyball when he was in grade eight at Brent School.

Both captains joined the Ateneo varsity teams in their first year. “I immediately entered the team because of love of the sport,” Twinkle says.

It’s all in the mind. “Volleyball is easy [becasue] it’s a mind game, too,” says Twinkle when asked why the sport appeals to her. “You don’t need to be a strong spiker to make points, basta mautak ka (as long as you are smart), you can win!” she adds.

For Welwynne, just having a sport to play is already a good thing. “I believe that sports mold one in a certain way. [It helps one] gain confidence and learn how to approach life,” he says.

To keep one’s focus during competitions, both captains say that there are things to keep in mind when playing.

For Twinkle, these are the things that she should remember: “[First,] volleyball is easy, use your mind. [Second,] let go of the mistakes and move on to make points. [Lastly,] have fun. There is no better game than having fun inside,” she says.

On his part, Welwynne believes every set counts, so it’s best to give your best effort right away.

Double-edged sword. Like any other sport, volleyball has its advantages and disadvantages.

Twinkle says that the game as a team sport can be compared to a double-edged sword. “I think a team sport is an advantage but the disadvantage is that because you are not in always in control and in the team you don’t all get along sometimes. That’s hard inside the court. You can’t win if you can’t see them as one inside the court,” she says.

For Welwynne, it is optimism that offers them an advantage against other teams. “[The] team still works hard every training [day] in order to achieve something,” he says.

Twinkle also says that volleyball makes one fit. But like any other sport, it also has its share of injuries. Ankle and knee injuries are frequent in volleyball, because the sport involves a lot of jumping, running, bending, and diving around court. Wrist injuries are common as well because of spiking.

Training and learning. Volleyball looks an easy enough sport to play, but it needs a lot of training for one to be proficient in it.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have busy training schedules, on and off the University Athletic Association of the Philippines season.

With the added load in their schedules, both captains admit to the sacrifices they have to make in order to continue playing.

“[I am] willing to sacrifice M-W-F from 5 to 9 PM and weekends for games for the benefit of the school,” says Welwynne.

“[It’s] challenging but fulfilling,” says Twinkle. “Challenging for I can’t go easy on my academics but fulfilling because despite all these challenges, I am still able to excel both in academics and sports.”

Gluing the team together. As team captains, both Twinkle and Welwynne have the responsibility of keeping the team spirit.

For Welwynne, although he had reservations when he assumed the position, he neverthless tries his best. “On one hand, ayoko maging (I don’t want to be the) team captain kasi wala ako sa (because I wasn’t in the) team last year. I think that a captain is supposed to be the one who knows all the players well. But, I am happy because I know that I have what it takes to motivate and energize my teammates,” he says.

Twinkle, on the other hand, talk to her teammates a lot, encourages them, and tries not to show her frustrations to them. “Feeling ko, ako kasi dapat yung pinakapatient (I feel that I have to be the most patient) and morale booster nila (of the team).”

Indeed, it takes more than just an interest to make someone proficient in volleyball. It is the genuine love of the sport that makes both Twinkle and Welwynne excel in the game.

Shakey’s unveils 3rd V-League on May 14

Shakey’s renews its commitment to help develop women’s volleyball and at the same time provide the country’s top netters a venue where they could further hone their talent and skills as it stages the third Shakey’s V-League on May 14 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym. The organizing Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. (SVMGI), which turned the once dormant game into a lively sport that had the fans clamoring for more after two conferences, has decided to go back to its original six-team roster, confident of sustaining the gains made by the sport in terms of popularity and
acceptance in so short a time. Arch rivals University of Santo Tomas and La Salle,
champions of the first two editions of the league sponsored by leading pizza parlor Shakey’s, head the cast that includes Lyceum, San Sebastian College, Far Eastern University and another school with a rich championship tradition in the sporting world, Ateneo. “We always believe in SVMGI’s vision, which is to push the sport further and bring back the glory days of women’s volleyball,” said Vic Gregorio, Shakey’s Pizza general manager. “Besides, the Shakey’s V-League also becomes a breeding ground of (volleybally) talents.” To ensure a power-packed, highly-charged conference and make it more exciting, all teams will go through a gruelling double-round eliminations and another double-round semifinals leading to the championship round, a best-of-three affair. Two games will be played on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays with highlights of the matches during the elims to be aired the following night of each day from 7-8 p.m. over IBC Channel 13. In the semis and finals, the games will be telecast in their entirety with the first match being aired on the same day while the second match will be aired the following day. The finals will have the second game which is the championship match being shown on the same day while the second which is the battle for third will be aired the following day.
”Just by going through the fans’ response in the first two conferences makes us so proud and inspired to continue staging this event, which we believe is good for Philippine sports,” said SVMGI president Emilio ”Jun” Bernardino. Truly, the event, backed by IBC-13, Jemah Television, Accel, and Mikasa, sparked the revival of women’s volleyball, a sport the Filipinos used to dominate, at least in the regional competitions with the third conference capping the frenzied summer sporting activities all over the country. With members of the national pool seeing action in various teams, the event also serves as part of the RP team’s buildup for the Southeast Asian Games slated Nov. 27-Dec. 5 here.

V-League Opens…Archers Win, Tigers Shocked
By Jan Carlo

Next Games – May 16 - Lyceum Gym:
2 PM – FEU vs. San Sebastian
4 PM – Lyceum vs. Ateneo

The Shakey’s V-League opened Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym with spectators like the ones in the Finals of the Second Conference. Shakey’s made changes for the league like the venue. Iinstead of having Rizal Coliseum only as the venue, they added the Blue Eagle Gym, Lyceum Gym, and the UST Gym as well. As for the uniforms, instead of having very long sleeves, which Balse of UST always folded before, the V-League made the jersey of every player a razorback, which came from the idea of Ateneo, the one they used in the UAAP for years.

Second Conference titlist La Salle Lady Archers pulled off a straight-set victory over newcomer Ateneo Lady Eagles. The Archers had many errors, which made the Eagles come close in the 2nd. and 3rd. sets, but still, Ateneo put up a good fight despite that they are new to the league. The Eagles really were not that jelled and united yet because of 3 reinforcements who are Mic-mic Laborte, Ers Iratay, Monica Aleta, who was missing in the game, and 2 guest players in Amy Guanco and Iris Ortega, compared to La Salle who just lost Mayette Carolino. Maureen Penetrante topscored for DLSU with 16 points while Michelle Laborte scored the same for the Katipunan-based squad. Michelle Carolino, the star player of La Salle was blocked by Ateneo 15 times. With this play, I would say the Ateneo Lady Eagles knew that Carolino is good that’s why she is the one who was tightly guarded and they let Manila Santos and Penetrante attack the open line, which was unguarded.

In the second game, the San Sebastian Lady Stags shocked First Conference champion, the UST Lady Tigresses as scored a come-from-behind victory against one of the league’s favorites. UST outscored SSC in the first set, while SSC got back from a 5-point lead in the 2nd set and had the momentum from the 2nd to the 4th set. Pano, the predicted outbreak maker, missed the action in the 3rd and 4th sets due to a conflict with her coach. Balse, who topscored with 16 markers, was really mad at her teammates due to errors made by Pimentel and Libero dela Fuente. The Stags, being a final four contender, really showed that they deserved to be in the top four. Many spectators in the Blue Eagle Gym were from UST, that’s why they always booed the referee if they thought the violation called was incorrect. Many fans were really upset by this, and this was unexpected.

The scores:
DLSU def. ADMU – 25-18, 25-23, 25-21
SSC def. UST – 10-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-14

Players of the game:
1st Game: Maureen Penetrante
2nd Game: Cherry Rose Macatangay
