Ateneo pretty much relinquished their crown to DLSU today. Although they had already lost to UST earlier in the week, Ateneo still had a chance to retain their championship if they beat La Salle this afternoon, but it was not to be. Obanana overcame a sprained ankle and defeated Ateneo #1 and last year's MVP, Irene Chiu in a tough match. Michelle Guerrero then demolished Andrea Go and the Chan sisters eked out a 3 game win against Chiu and Aurora Co.
Even though they lost, the Ateneo Lady shuttlers showed true class. Irene Chiu is one hell of a class act. She started the match as heavy underdog to the Philippines' 2nd ranked ladies player, Obanana. Chiu quickly raced to a 5-0 lead when all of a sudden Obanana pulled up lame with a sprained ankle. In my mind, she was setting up a convenient scenario on which to blame a possible upset loss to Chiu. Yeah, she really did sprain her ankle, and it took great courage for her to continue to play on much less win the match but it sure seemed like she was over acting the injury a bit. For Chiu it was a no-win situation. If she had won, people would have simply attributed it to Obanana's injury. Through it all, Chiu displayed poise and true sportsmanship. While Obanana grunted and shrieked and openly celebrated every won rally, Chiu just simply played. She was a breath of fresh air in this "raise the roof" atmosphere that constantly pervades the sports world nowadays. Mac Cardona and LA Tenorio could sure learn a lesson in sportsmanship from Ms. Chiu.
