1) Michael Jordan on the Knicks (the Playoffs 1992)
- Jordan drives from the left side of the court. John Starks and Charles Oakley try to trap him by the baseline. Mike retreats with the two Knicks following him back out. Only to their horror, His Airness wheels back on a nifty spin then elevates over Patrick Ewing to posterize him for the nth time. Ewing has time and again consented to play a huge part on Jordan’s highlight reel. Gotta love him.
2) Grant Hill on Alonzo Mourning
- In a heated (pun intended) game between the Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat, Zo roughs up the Air Apparent in one play that pisses the holy crap out of the normally timid Hill. Next time down the block, Hill takes off from about 13 feet to jam one down Mourning’s throat complete with a staredown that by today’s standards will merit a T. What is it with these G-Town centers who just love to make cameo appearances in posters?
3) Scottie Pippen on Patrick Ewing (the Playoffs 1994)
- After getting blasted by his coach, teammates, and the media for taking himself out of the game in the dying seconds of Game 3 against the hated Knicks with the Bulls down 2-1 in the semis, Pippen was ready to take his frustrations out on the hardcourt. After stealing a lazy pass from Knicks guard Derek Harper, Supafly rockets towards the basket with only the Big Fella between him and a tied series. Pip cocks his arm and takes off for a violent and-one that sends the United Center in a frenzy.
4) Vince Carter on Frederic Weisz (2000 Olympics)
- France’s 7-foot behemoth plucks down a weak-ass brick and tosses it upcourt to a teammate. Air Canada was hanging around the neighborhood just in case an opportunity presented itself. Lo and behold, Weisz returns the favor by throwing a weak-ass outlet that Carter easily picks off that is outright thievery! With no teammate in sight for a two-on-one, Vinsanity decides to take matters into his own hands and --- Sacre Bleu! --tomahawks the Frenchman into one of the Olympics’ most indelible images.
5) Dominique Wilkins on Larry Bird
- You’d think that after facing the Hawks at least four times a year, Larry Legend would know better than to try to stop Nique on the break. The Human Highlight Reel is gearing up for what looks like to be another monstrous jam but Bird deigns to block the shot. Big mistake. Nique cocks the ball, brings it down to his knees and throws down a vicious two handed windmill that sends Bird skidding down the baseline on his butt as #21 makes his way to the free throw line for a bonus.
6) Paolo Bugia vs the UE Red Warriors (2001 elims)
- Straying around the left side of rainbow arc, Ateneo’s lanky beanpole takes a kick out, yet instead of pulling up for a line drive jumper, Bugs drives down the lane and it’s hammer time over UE’s troika of the Saint, Paul Artadi and their lanky center whose name I forget at the moment who flail hopelessly away at maybe the best dunk of the 2001 UAAP season.

1. Kevin Johnson (Phoenix Suns) on Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets)
- You've probably seen this in one of those Converse React Juice commercials. KJ blows by his defender/s and drives straight to the basket where The Dream is waiting. No fancy cross-overs, no fakes, no decoy cutters... KJ jumps straight-up, Hakeem does the same but is a millisecond slower. KJ's left shoulder comes into contact with Hakeem's chest, KJ stuffs the ball with his right hand. I almost bought a converse sneaker that day.
2. Joe Smith (Golden State Warriors) on Dikembe Mutombo (Atlanta Hawks)
- Warriors fan here. This happens during a year when the league bans Mutombo from doing his "finger waving" taunt. This also a year when one 6-9 rookie from Maryland is made the number 1 pick by the perennial Pacific Division cellar dwellers. During one offensive rebound play, Smith grabs the ball with two hands and jumps for a two-handed jam. Mutombo, waiting under the basket, raises both hands as well but jumps a very late. Smith jams the ball so hard that it hits mutombo smack on the head. As soon as Smith's Nikes hit the wood, he waves his own finger right in front of Mutombo's fat lips. He get's a T for taunting but it was all worth it.
3. Stromile Swift (Memphis Grizzlies) on Yao Ming (Houston Rockets)
- Just saw this in one of those Solar TV commercials. Stro-Down-Throw-Down meets the Great Wall of China.

Remember Billy Ray Bates' moonshot?
Ginebra had made the off-season splash by signing former Redmanizer Super-import Billy Ray Bates and bringing back scoring machine Michael Hackett. But still, they had their hands full against a Manila Beer squad that essentially had only a very good starting five that was nonetheless a power house: ex-Phi Slamma Jamma brother Michael Young, the speedy Harold Keeling, Abet Guidaben, Yoyoy Villamin and Atoy Co.
In Game 1 of the Conference Finals, Ginebra was trailing all throughout when they staged a furious rally down the stretch. Needing one last defensive stop, Ginebra got it and Bates collared the ball. On this night, he wasn't going to pass the ball with the last seconds of the game ticking away. Past the free throw line, Superman took off and over Abet Guidaben, who Bates recalled, tried to go for the moon but instead saw the stars as he rammed in a thunderous dunk down the throat of Manila Beer's franchise player. The game winning stuff got them over the hump to win the title for a championship-starved Gin's team.

That was Game 2 of the 1993 Eastern Semis at the Garden. Knicks had the homecourt advantage and went up 2-0.

Guys, if you use KaZaA, or any other P2P program, type in "James White" and download some stuff on him. The guy's the best dunker you've never heard of. Honestly, after seeing what he can do, the guy's the best dunker I'VE ever seen, bar none.

how bout the showdown between 'Nique and MJ in the slam dunk competition;
or the mad hops that was the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest. (feat... T-Mac, Continental Air or formerly known as Air Canada, and Stevie Franchise);
or that illest dunk by J-Rich on the 2003 dunkfest.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs North Carolina State Wolfpack ACC just the other day.
Tar Heel back-up PG Ray Felton throws an alley-oop to super frosh Marvin Williams. The pass is actually a little way off. For added difficulty, Williams jumps a little too late. The rock is about to sail out of bounds past his head when he reaches behind with his two hands, scoops the ball and in one fell swoop, slams in home.
Then it's bedlam at the Dean Dome.

By the way, there is a wall-sized poster at Madison Square Garden of Starks' dunk. It covers a whole section near the Knicks' dugout.

Since y'all are in the NBA, lemme put in a few local dunks:
1) Ruben Dela Rosa's tomahawk slam in traffic (Manila Metrostars vs Pasig-Rizal Pirates, MBA eliminations 2000) Ruben Dela Rosa gets the ball in the high post at their right quarter court. He puts on a crossover dribble, takes off on his right side then cocks the ball back and tomahawks it in on his left side flying over and above something like four defenders. (I don't exactly recall if it was Pasig, might've been one of the Southern teams)
2) JC Intal And 1's Arwind Santos (Addict Mobile vs Magnolia, Letran Gym, 2nd round Elims 2005) JC Intal gets the rebound and makes like he's going for a coast-to-coast ride. Some 12 feet from the ring he takes off and Arwind Santos looks to stop him. Just when everyone thinks it'll be just Arwind trying to stop JC with a foul, Jc just seems to keep going higher and throws down a vicious one over a hapless Arwind. The ref blows a foul on the UAAP MVP and Intal takes a bonus freethrow.
3) Noli Locsin rebounds a missed freethrow and slams it over Alvin Patrimonio (Anejo vs Purefoods, All-Filipino Finals, 1996) Vince Hizon misses the second of a take-2 and Noli Locsin soars high above everyone else in the lane to seize the offensive board. He comes down with the ball and slams it home over a stunned Alvin Patrimonio.
4) Japeth Aguilar goes coast-to-coast against the Perpetual Help Altas (MICABA Elims vs UPHR at EAC Gym 2004) Japeth Aguilar takes down a rebound and finds his teammates covered. He decides to bring the ball down himself, as the Altas continue to cover the other Eagles. By the time they realize their error its too late, Japeth has gone airborne about 14 feet from the basket. The next moment even the referee drops his whistle even as the entire Perpetual coaching staff groans as Japeth posterizes the Altas.

Ethanboy,
yes, you can tour Madison Square Garden and see what it has to offer. That life-sized Starks shot is incredible. They normally give those tours before game time or non-game days or when there isn't anything going on in that house same (if that does happen). Like the Wachovia Center or old Core States Complex where I did go, you can see those retired Sixers jerseys and stuff.
An old classmate of mine had the chance to go to the old Boston Garden and see all those banners upfront. He felt his knees buckle as soon as he stepped onto the parquet.
I get that feeling each time I go to Yankee Stadium. See that quote by General Douglas MacArthur by the tunnel. Monument Park, centerfield at Yankee Stadium --the most famous real estate in American sports history. Wow.

In Jun Limpot's final year with the Green Archers (hmm. dapat Benilde siya. bwahaha), there was this one game where he went up against the plenty tough Adamson Falcons with Marlou Aquino, EJ Fiehl, and Kenneth Duremdes in their line-up. The game was played at Loyola and had all the ferocity of a rugby match.
Marlou and Jun took turns dunking on each other in one slam fest. The dunk of the game came when an enraged Limpot (who was nearly decapitated by an EJ Fiehl forearm in an earlier play) rose up against the two skyscrapers to posterize them with a thunderous one-hander.
With that play, the Archers pulled away to win the game.

I would love to see the inside of the Yankees' locker room (but of course, not while they're in there *blush*). I hear there is a plaque on the wall that features a quote from Joe DiMaggio: "I thank God every day for making me a Yankee."

[/off-topic] Back to the dunks.
Don't forget 7 January 2005 - Japeth dunking in traffic during the Home & Away game against FEU. No. 11, aka the Betches' Choice, was standing his ground, no doubt ready to send the skinny kid flying, but our boy took to the air before that could happen and No. 11 was left cowering under the basket and hoping that the ball wouldn't bonk him on the head. Harharhar.

i remember seeing a red bull/san miguel game where a seemingly possessed rico villanueva threw down a vicious tomahawk over the outstretched arms of san miguel's import art long. but the fun didn't end there. after the dunk, rico points at the import and gives him an earful...

damn, and to think he was still a rookie then...
a dunk i would have wanted to see but never did get to...during the closing minutes of an admu/pcu game (i think it was from the university games tournament), rich alvarez runs the entire length of the court for a fastbreak. at the end of the court stood just one defender - pcu's bad boy leo gaspi. since the game was beyond reach already (admu was leading by a big margin), rich probably thought he could create a dunk worthy of countless replays, with gaspi just letting him go. with large strides, rich approaches the goal. as he nears it, he jumps off 7 or 8 feet from the basket and attempts to make a 360-degree dunk. with rich halfway through the turn and in mid-air, gorilla gaspi runs after him and hacks him hard on the arm, pissing off rich bigtime. oh well, would have been a really nice slam...

Eagle Eyes,
Was in that game against PCU during the Bantay Bata league. Actually, Rich was undercut by Gaspi. A lot of Ateneans nearly stormed the PCU bench with some supporters going right for the bench. An embarrased Jimmy Mariano, Dolphins Coach, was visibly irked by the actions of his player and yanked him out immediately before things could get out of hand.
Had that gone in, that would have been something, right? 360 screw dunk. hoo-hah!

one dunk you probably didn't see, because there were only around 30 of us in the Ateneo "gallery" that day -
Ateneo vs. NU, 2nd round elims, 1991 or 92 season, in a nearly empty Loyola Center. the Blue Eagles were listless while the bulldogs, who paraded players with names like parapara, losloso and lampitoc, were entirely focused on scoring an upset. we were a one-man team behind Velvet Touch Ticzon in those days and in this game the King Eagle was running amuck as usual. he kept playing the passing lanes for interceptions and picking the pockets of the NU guards. on one play, he was geared for yet another breakaway layup and after yet another steal. only this time, he leaped high into the air, twisted 180 degrees, and did a 2-handed reverse jam which stunned everyone in the gym. that play provided the highlight for what was otherwise a dreary game, which we won.
that was a saturday afternoon, after CMT. anyone else here who remembers that game and that play?

Kinda cool seeing Josh Smith go retro on his windmill dunk. And he got a 50 to boot! There ya go.
And that stuff with an assist from K-Mart -- yeah!!!!
But don't you think Amare's vicious slam off a better assist from Steve Nash is the bomb!
Nice to see some creativity back in the dunk contest.

I miss the power slams of the Tower of Power Benjie Paras. This guy was dunking on imports before anyone else, and doing it in traffic. I remember a dunk he had against Fil-Sham Sonny Alvarado, in 1999 during his second MVP season. He got an offensive rebound, pumpfaked Alvarado out of his shorts, and then slammed home a thunderous one-hander.

dunks that woke me up while watching the game/s
1. Tracy Mcgrady on Shawn Bradley, 05 playoffs, houston-dallas
- as the ball was swung to the left corner, just in front of the rockets bench, t-mac seemed poised to take a three. all of a sudden he decides to take it strong to the hoop, over the 7'6 bradley for an and 1 that mike james enjoyed so much he rolled around laughing in appreciation
2. dwyane wade, rookie season, 04 playoffs versus indiana
- can't remember what game in the series that was, but all i remember is a driving dwyane wade slamming it over jermaine o'neal followed by the roar of the miami crowd. unfortunately they lost the series
3. lebron james, regular season, versus miami heat 04-05
- now this was SICK. the only thing between king james and the hoop was miami point guard damon jones. jones tried to jump with lebron, but cleveland's number 23 cocked the ball back and literally jumped over a cowering jones for a monster slam. damon's friends actually called him up after the game laughing, asking him if he was fine.
now there's a thought...
*dream slam
4. japeth aguilar takes "the ninja" to slam school
- now this was SICK. the only thing between ateneo's japeth aguilar and the hoop was dlsu guard joseph yeo. yeo tried to jump with aguilar, but ateneo's number 20 cocked the ball back and literally jumped over a cowering yeo for a monster slam. yeo's friends actually called him up after the game laughing, asking him if he was fine.
