It was a great day for football in field number 1 just across the Loyola Center.
Our very own Ateneo Blue Eagles defeated the DLSU

Green Archers 3-2 to start its title retention bid in UAAP 67.
I hear we have a good team and the elements are there for a fruitful campaign.
To anyone of you familiar with the players and other teams, please join in the discussion.
GO ATENEO ONE BIG FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our Men's Football team kicked off the season with a scintillating win over La Salle at our college field today, 3-2.
At first, it seemed like it was going to be a high scoring affair for five minutes into the game, Ateneo scored on a header. The Green Team responded three minutes later with their own header and took the lead minutes later off a misplay by our goalkeeper. Despite our team being the defending champs, they are by no means pushovers. But La Salle is said to have a really good team, bringing in the best players from the La Salle school system. But we equalized before the half ended.
Close to the game's final moments, Mickey Ingles got the best of a La Salle defender and ultimately the goalkeeper with some nifty footwork before kicking in the goal into an empty net.
Yahoo!!!
Congrats, team blue! Keep up the great work guys!
See ya all on either Wednesday or Thursday when we play UE sa college field.

i got to see the game. it was good exciting match although i'm a bit disappointed that we didn't thrash la salle the way we did last year. we could have lost if not for la salle's lousy keeper. the poor guy cost them two goals.
aside from mickey, another player who had a great game was roger lastimado. his well palced cross in the first half enabled them to tie the game at 2-2.

Great come from behind win by Ateneo against UP this afternoon.
It was a tale of 2 different halves. Ateneo was tentative the whole first half and UP took the lead with a goal by national team player Kel Alvarez off an uncharecteristic defensive blunder by the otherwise steady back four.
Ateneo came out blazing to start the 2nd half but UP held off every attack. UP pulled everyone behind the ball and it looked like we were never going to score. Ateneo, however, continued to pressure the UP defense which finally led to a goal by sub Aris Bocalan after a golamouth scramble. Ateneo could have easily shut down and settled for a 1-1 draw but they continued to press. The winning goal came from a seemingly harmless throw-in play at the halfway line on the left side. 2 quick passes to the reverse side saw Mickey Ingles finish off the Maroons.
JP Merida was outstanding the whole game and aside from the blunder that led to the UP goal, the defense, anchored by Ozaeta was rock steady.
Come out and watch this great team, they are the reigning champions.

The funny thing about that loss to FEU today is that both times, the defense made a mistake that FEU was able to exploit by the sheerest of dumb luck. Moreso for the game-winning goal wherein a defender failed to hustle down to meet the ball which a Tamaraw striker blasted with about two minutes left in the game.
Sayang kasi we kept them on their heels with repeated attacks that we couldn't convert.
Wake up call indeed. They let this one slip away. No time for complacency, boys. Singing the alma mater said it all - disappointment was written on all over their faces.
Let's Go Ateneo!

Bad loss, but it may help us win the championship in the end. It's good that they lost now because FEU exposed Ateneo's weaknesses. One of our strengths in offense--overlapping right and left backs--is also our most glaring weakness in defense. A quick counter attack exposes Villon and Ozaeta, our center banks, almost always leaving them in odd-man situations (3 vs 2). One of the midfielders has to come back to help, usually that is what JP Merida does so well but he was out injured.

your right. if we are going to utilize wingback, we should have a defensive midfielder handy in such counter-attacks. that's what FEU did, intercept, then longball it to the other half.
mickey ingles being taken out so early was i think also a factor. if he's gonna play for just a short time, might as well use him as a super-sub.

I think one more win or 2 draws should assure us of the twice to beat advantage. With 3 points separating the remaining 5 teams, the race for the 2nd finalist is still wide open.
jancarlo
Feb 8 2005, 04:53 PM
uhm nope i think...kasi there are 3 games left for each team... so, even if la salle or ust wins all of those 3, we will still have that twice-to-beat advantage, however that's IF, pero i think not, our next games are UST and DLSU the ones whom they say "the back to back stopper", anyway, WE STILL BELEVE!
i'm sure of the twice-to-beat, we don't have a problem there anymore even though we lose all those 3 last games...pero it's impossible tlga if they can win those 3 games...
I HOPE FOR A BACK TO BACK!

With 3 wins, UST would end up at 18 points (3 points per win/ 1 pt per draw). If we lose 3, we'd be stuck at 16. That's why I said we need at least one win or 2 draws. If we both end up at 18 points (the only way possible is if we lose against UST and draw the other 2 games and UST wins all 3) then UST would get the 2 to beat because of a better win-loss record head-to-head (I'm assuming that's the tiebreaker). We need one more draw to be a sure finalist.

Feb 9 2005, 08:17 AM
In the game against UE, our center backs were still exposed due to the space vacated by the attacking wing backs, UE just wasn't able to capitalize. JP Merida was back and he provides some stability in midfield. He reminds me of Patrick Vieira of Arsenal or Dunga of Brazil '94, the ball-winning midfield general who can make plays with pinpoint passing.
jancarlo
Feb 9 2005, 04:49 PM
one thing's for sure, DLSU or UST will really try to get that second place spot to increase their tally of the general championship title, so, i think UST's hungrier than DLSU but still, "bilog ang bola", hindi natin alam if UST or DLSU...anyway, UP will be in the finals if they beat all their opponents in the coming games, which is FEU (Thurs, 3 PM), UST (Sun, 3 PM) and ADMU (Wed, 1 PM)

Feb 10 2005, 06:03 PM
results of today's games:
UE def. DLSU - 3-2
FEU def. UP - 2-0
ADMU draws with UST
current standings:
ADMU - 5 - 2 - 1 = 17 points
UST - 1 - 7 - 0 = 10 points
FEU - 2 - 4 - 2 = 10 points
UE - 2 - 3 - 3 = 9 points
DLSU - 2 - 2 - 4 = 8 points
UP - 1 - 4 - 3 = 7 points
Ateneo automatically gets the twice-to-beat advantage, because if UST or FEU wins all of their next 2 games, it will just sum up to 16 points.

Nice game kanina, Team! Congrats for that twice-to-beat advantage.
Thought that UST made a mistake with their game plan at the start of the second half. With Ateneo desperate to score the equalizer, UST pulled back all their players, strikers and midfielders included, to protect their goal. What they should have done was to keep the pressure up on Ateneo by going on the offense much like the way they did after scoring the first goal of the game. Instead Ateneo became doubly aggressive mid-way during the second half.
But then again, we should have won the game had the ref awarded a penalty kick to Roger Lastimado for that takedown inside the box -- yes, it was inside the box.
Hope we successfully defend the crown!

Time to scout people!
PS
and improve that defense! just noticed that most of the time, there was no right back, especially in the first half. if mickey g. would be there, he'd be more to the center, covering up for #8 Villon who goes forward to help in the attack, leaving the right side vulnerable.

Agree about the defence, except that Villon and Ozaeta are the stay behind backs--and they do a stalwart job. It's Perez or Siojo on the right and Santos on the left who do the attacking on the wings. They should either lessen their forays up front or learn to get back faster to contain the counter-attacks.

i agree that villon and ozaeta's level of skill is superb. it takes more than skill, though, to defend against odd-man situations. one needs luck.
