Hey guys, please watch
Blue Repertory's THE WIZ.It's a whole new take on the story of
The Wizard Of Oz, a
ghetto-inspired musical from the costumes to the language down to the intricately interwoven
Gospel | funk | ballad | honky tonk songs, dance numbers, and instrumentals that are sure to keep you grooving along.
THE WIZ is sure to suspend the audience's disbelief as
Bea Garcia is transformed into
Dorothy and gets blown by the tornado into the land of Oz, where she meets
the scarecrow, lion, and tin man.Sobrang galing talaga. Nood kayo. I don't usually plug plays or musicals here, but this is really worth watching.
Sept 10, 11, 17, 18, 7pm at the Rizal Mini Theater.Tickets available at the RMT.

TANGHALANG ATENEO
27th Repertory Season
A Season in Flight
Tanghalang Ateneo's 27th Repertory Season deal with people in flight – the term “flight” having two meanings: first as “the act or instance of running away” and second as “an imaginative or unrestrained exercise or display,” a flight of the imagination, so to speak. Both of these meanings apply to each production. People in this season's plays flee from an oppressive condition, but they also construct their own utopia, a vision of a world far better than their present state. This vision or dream, this imagined world, motivates their escape from oppression, and allows them to transcend the suffering of the present.
Mist, the first play scheduled for July, lays out the philosophical framework of the season's productions. A stage adaptation of Miguel de Unamuno’s masterful philosophical novel, Mist focuses on the struggles of Augusto Perez, a pampered son, who seeks solace from earthly despair by escaping from the confines of a fiction world to visit his creator, the author of the novel, to find out how to craft a meaningful existence. The surreal leap to the author's world is Augusto's utopian dream and Unamuno's metaphor for the human capacity to transcend oppression. A world premiere production!
Bienvenido Noriega Jr.’s Bayan-bayanan, a modern classic of Filipino drama, follows in September 2005. The play focuses on a group of Filipino immigrants in Europe, the precursors of contemporary overseas contract workers. Far from home, separated from family, regarded as second class citizens, and impelled to stay abroad to earn for families back home, the Filipino immigrants create their own vision of home – bayan-bayanan instead of bahay-bahayan – to ward off the loneliness and alienation felt in a foreign land.
Come November 2005, Tanghalang Ateneo’s new recruits display their own version of flight in Nasaan si Kaliwete?, a translation and adaptation of a famous ensemble piece of American drama written during the Great Depression. In this version, a union of tricycle drivers meet to act on the possibility of staging a strike. Within this frame of a meeting emerge poignant vignettes of how some of these drivers fled from their oppressive situations at home or work and joined a union that promises better wages and job conditions for all.
The season’s finale in January 2006 confronts another masterpiece of fiction, Of Mice and Men, a novel and a play written by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, Two close and unlikely friends, George and Lennie, run away from the law and find themselves working as migrant farmers in a California ranch. Struggling over the daily demands of work and interpersonal relationships, notably with the wife of the boss' son, the two nevertheless find solace in a dream to own their own farm. That dream is threatened, however, when murder charges are heaped upon Lennie, and put the friendship on the line.
Should friendship ties be broken to keep the utopian dream alive? Should we prick the bubble of a dream, illusory it may be, if that dream is the sole refuge of a collective life? Must the lives of people in flight always be bitter and painful? What can societies do to ease the fragmentation brought about by the flight of its people?
Seek some answers in Tanghalang Ateneo’s Season in Flight. The plays delight and disturb, entertain and provoke, and offer an intimacy of performance unfelt in movies or television.
