Sisig? Anyone say sisig?
From this ex-afficionadio's pre-high cholesterol count point of view, a couple of sisig "must-trys" are the old reliable Trellis' and Dencio's (tostado) versions.
Trellis is still there along Kalayaan Avenue, right behind the Quezon City Hall. Last time I went, sisig now costs P90.00. However, the portions are still very generous.
Dencio's has been bought by the pulblicly listed arm of the Pancake House conglomorate (owned by the Lorenzo family, I think).
Now for some other random thought, though the burger in Araneta is quite good, the distinction for the best burger I ever ate in the Cubao area still belongs to Jack's restaurant. It was formerly located at the corner of EDSA and P. Tuazon (where the Sea Oil gas station now stands). How good was it? Think Brothers Burger being served in the early 80s.
Finally, I bet the current generation hasn't eaten in good old Ma Mon Luk. Word to the wise, out of sheer nostalgia, I went to their only surviving branch along Quezon Avenue last year, the food's terrible now! However, you feel like you stepped into the twilight zone with the old ceiling fans, antique tile flooring and autographed pictures of all the 70s movie stars who patronized the joint back then.
Ma Mon Luk.... how can i forget this place?!
It was the type of restaurant where you'd get to see the exact opposite of restaurant hygiene.
When you asked for a glass of water, it iwould be completely normal to see the waiter's fingers touching the inside of the glass. It was actually worse when the glass was already filled with water and the fingernails were dipping into the liquid. (softdrinks na lang po manong!)
I also used to think that fat & sweaty cooks wearing sandos were only a product of philippine cinema, but Ma Mon Luk cubao branch proved me wrong. (kaya pala sumasarap ang siopao pag siya ang lumalamas)
Also, the wanton soup/mami was really great. However, the smell was a complete turnoff. Imagine boiling your sweaty football socks along with the broth. That's how bad it smelled. (but it tasted good!)
