Sisig? Anyone say sisig?

From this ex-afficionadio's pre-high cholesterol count point of view, a couple of sisig "must-trys" are the old reliable Trellis' and Dencio's (tostado) versions.

Trellis is still there along Kalayaan Avenue, right behind the Quezon City Hall. Last time I went, sisig now costs P90.00. However, the portions are still very generous.

Dencio's has been bought by the pulblicly listed arm of the Pancake House conglomorate (owned by the Lorenzo family, I think).

Now for some other random thought, though the burger in Araneta is quite good, the distinction for the best burger I ever ate in the Cubao area still belongs to Jack's restaurant. It was formerly located at the corner of EDSA and P. Tuazon (where the Sea Oil gas station now stands). How good was it? Think Brothers Burger being served in the early 80s.

Finally, I bet the current generation hasn't eaten in good old Ma Mon Luk. Word to the wise, out of sheer nostalgia, I went to their only surviving branch along Quezon Avenue last year, the food's terrible now! However, you feel like you stepped into the twilight zone with the old ceiling fans, antique tile flooring and autographed pictures of all the 70s movie stars who patronized the joint back then.

Eagle Eyes, Aysee is really just a hole in the wall type of resto. Even with the probability of getting hepa, i just can't resist this little resto. I usually ask for some boiling water and then i soak the utensils there before i use them.

Hey Giant! I miss Trellis! We used to eat here when we had long breaks in college. The lechon kawali with sauce is also good.

Tostado sisig in Dencio's? SARAP! But i have eaten in several different branches and sometimes, the taste is really no longer consistent. After the DLRT game last sunday, we ate in Dencio's in Araneta. Nyek, the sizzling squid had absolutely no taste. Had to give it a super-generous drizzling of Knorr.

Giant, just let me know when you want to sample the roadside appeal of Aysee. Sama ako. biggrin.gif

Ma Mon Luk! I didn't know it's still alive! My family and I used to eat there when they still had that branch along EDSA. Whatever happened to Ma Mon Luk? I heard the owners had some kind of dispute kaya nagsara yung mga branches nila.

yeah i still remember that old jack's restaurant. was right beside what became club dredd in the late 90's (or was the club dredd facility part of the old jack's?) hehe those were the days when ali mall was still the "in" mall to be in wink.gif

i remember there was a ma mon luk along aurora boulevard near the area of those old theaters (remar, coronet, diamond, etc.). i have no idea if that eatery is still there. damn creepy place.

Trellis' version will always be classic for me. It reminds me of college and our beer guzzling days of yore. The sisig goes well with their burong hipon that goes with eggplant (and chopped onions yata.)

Dencio's is another story. I hear it has just been acquired by a large food conglomerate (Jollibee foods?) so I dunno' if it still has the same QC. Anyway, ask for their sisig "tostado"- it went really well with their garlic rice and fried tofu with sesame seed sprinkles. Yummy! Sayang, wala na yung isang Dencio, yung Mariano, madali paki-usapan yun pag special request.

As for the Sisig with egg of Allblue, that I'll have to try. (Naalala ko tuloy si Danny Vanni, "SARSI with egg" naman yun, hehehe)

Dencio's good but Congo Grill sisig is better.

Ma Mon Luk.... how can i forget this place?!

It was the type of restaurant where you'd get to see the exact opposite of restaurant hygiene.

When you asked for a glass of water, it iwould be completely normal to see the waiter's fingers touching the inside of the glass. It was actually worse when the glass was already filled with water and the fingernails were dipping into the liquid. (softdrinks na lang po manong!)

I also used to think that fat & sweaty cooks wearing sandos were only a product of philippine cinema, but Ma Mon Luk cubao branch proved me wrong. (kaya pala sumasarap ang siopao pag siya ang lumalamas)

Also, the wanton soup/mami was really great. However, the smell was a complete turnoff. Imagine boiling your sweaty football socks along with the broth. That's how bad it smelled. (but it tasted good!)

there are two establishments there, the one with the orignal idea of setting up a sidewalk drinking place is called the meatshop, then the liquor store beside it copied the idea a few weeks later.

beer is ice cold and cheap, the last time i was there, they sold it at 19 bucks. food is good, they first started with barbeques, then moved on to inihaw na pusit and tilapia.

it is frequented by people from ateneo, up and foreign students. parking is a bit of a hassle when the place is packed.

Chicken boy is directly across those two establishments.

Commercial lang ha - beer there is P15, lower pa if you drink non-smb brands.

ARANETA BURGERS: hehe. i told you so. panalo lalo pag dinagdagan mo yung mayo at ketsup. wait. yun pala ang hindi ko nagawa nung last game. di ako nakabili ng burger. nanlibre kasi ng pizza yung syota ng brod ko. syet, kaya siguro nasira yung cosmic balance.

AYSEE: i don't know guys... pero last time i visited the place, sumakit batok ko (baka tumatanda na talaga). at di na sya kasingsarap nung dati. pero ayokong kumain doon pag game. dati kasi, nung college, sa tuwing doon kami kumakain pag may game... laging talo.

TRELLIS: hehe. champion talaga. swerte nga at sa UP ako ngayon nagpo-post grad studies. lapit sa trellis. lapit din sa pre-school na pinagtuturuan ng girlfriend ko. kaya napapadalas ako rito. suggestion: TRY THE TOKWA'T BABOY. champion. SUKA PA LANG ULAM NA!

MA MON LUK: another advantage of studying in UP. lapit sa quezon av branch. madalas din kami doon kumain ng UP classmates ko (anim kami sa barkada--- 3 kaming atenista). ang alam ko ay may branch pa ito sa may quiapo. malapit sa raon. dito kami tsumitsibog pag namimili kami ng dvd sa quiapo.

CONGO: so far, the best sisig for me.

Okay dito. May TV kaya nakakapanood kami ng games in between classes pag may Thursday game. Try it…

I ate lunch at Trellis yesterday for the first time in four or five years. Sorry to disagree with you, bluewing, but I think Trellis' sisig is still the best. biggrin.gif

About Bartolo's, is that the popular hole-in-the-wall joint owned by some Beta Sigmans?

And I'd like to add myself to the growing number of satisfied Araneta burger customers in this site. And sarap talaga. Sayang, most of the remaining elimination games will be held at Philsports.
Sangre Azul
Trellis - great sisig, good portions others fares yummy as well. The price is still reasonable. A plus, they've renovated the comfort rooms so it's clean and well maintained. A must try - crumbled apple pie (with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!!!) throw the diet away and splurge on this number. Worth it talaga!!! happy.gif

Chicken Boy Inasal at Xavieville ave. - despite the location, they serve good food for the price that's less than a P100. Full meal na yon!!! Don't forget to ask for the Chicken oil that you drizzle on your rice. And the special salt... If you can't stand eating by the roadside, they also have spaces inside (para safe lungs mo from all the cars passing...) [hey, i'm not being partial since place is owmed by my good friend -- ok naman talaga!] rolleyes.gif

Ambrosia's -- wonder if they still have another branch elsewhere??? They had the best roasted calf! Way better than the other one ___ ano na nga yun? the one they have in NBC tent bazaars come christmas time??? Ambrosia's is way tastier even without sauce. But the sauce, yummmmm, sauce pa lang, ulam na!!! he he

Full house -- it was so sad that this last restaurant of 80's era closed down less than a year ago. Loved their chicken fillet with cheese sauce. Brought my kids over there one weekend last year and they were hooked. So whenever we were in the area, we'd swing by for a meal. Wonder if anyone can contact the owners for the recipe... I miss that Chicken fillet sad.gif

There was this other place in the katipunan area just in front of Gate 3 -- they served the best Korean beef back in the late 80's POTLUCK ata name of the place...

Finally took a look at what was going on here and I was surprised it turned into a food column.

If there's any place I miss in Manila, it's this place that calls itself "the original Ma family restaurant." It's the original Ma Mon Luk resto. It's called Ma Su Ki (also popularly known among the older generation and Chinoys as Ma Kong) and it's located in Salazar Street in the belly of Chinatown. That place was great. My Sunday evening ritual was to go there and order their big bowl of mami (sa laki, parang pang-hilamos), siopao (so round and huge, a naughty friend of mine once compared it to a certain public figure's breasts) and siomai. They had this sweet secret sauce that you poured on everything and it was pure heaven. The broth did have a weird smell. Forget cachichas, this thing was something else. My girlfriend (then) said it smelled of urine and refused to eat it. I said, love me, love my food. We're friends now.

But, that stuff was great! I actually hand-carried a few of their siopaos with me when I went to the States. Only one is left and it's been sitting in the back of my freezer since I got here last year. Am actually scared to eat it because that would be the end of my supply -- and because, God knows how it tastes now.

Thanks for keeping me updated on the food scene. Nothing like food to make you miss home.

Mang Jimmy's... home of the original tapamix... rice-all-you-can.

Wonderboynastyman's notes on the mang Jimmy Experience:

Mang jimmy is a retired philippine navy cook. He started the restaurant in 1995 (my freshman year in UP) and he only had 3 lawanit tables. At first, the story about an eatery with eat all you can rice and the legendary mixed tapa circulated like an urban legend until our yano clasmate was kind enough to draw us a map (yes, a map!). I think we were among the first ateneans to ever set foot on mang jimmy soil (lupa talaga yung sahig niya).

The original tapa mix serving cost 50 pesos and could feed 2 to 3 persons. Add that to the endless supply of rice plus the very affordable coke litro from the nearby tindahan and you had college boys with enough baon money to spend at gulod and sarah's.

By the second sem of 95, our AHS 95 classmates were indoctrinated on the art of fine dining, mang-jimmy-style.

And just in case you were thinking, the food was that greasy from the very start.

My wife and I went back to the eatery along Maginhawa in UP Village that serves its famed burritos and I finally saw Bartolo's. Turns out we were talking about two different places. The place owned by Beta Sigmans is further down the road near Equitable Bank.

I'm sure you also know about the burritos place since it's just a stone's throw away from Bartolo's. Masarap pa rin ang burritos nila although I was surprised to see the price is now P48. When I first ate there ten or so years ago a burrito could be had for less than P30. Btw, exactly where in UP Village is this Salt of the Earth?

Haven't been to Mang Jimmy's in awhile. Glad to hear the place is alive and well.

Someone asked about the restaurant in front of Gate 3? Yep, that was Potluck. That place actually burned down in 1986 but was rebuilt. I think it finally closed for good in the early '90s. Ken Afford has taken its place.

are we allowed to have a tailgate party at the araneta parking lot? unofficial syempre, parada lang dun tapos magdala ng cooler at inom until gametime....will we be violating any ordinances if we try to do this?

paging any people with araneta connections or yung mga lawyer na rin wink.gif

Madalas naman lawyers are not too familiar with local (city) ordinances so malamang you won't be getting a definite answer anytime soon.

Anyway, I know that QC (where Araneta is situated) has an ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages during daytime - you can see this sa mga 7-11 usually posted sa beer ref. I assume that with an ordinance like this, alcohol consumption sa daytime, lalo na in a rather public setting like a carpark, is likewise prohibited.

Speaking of lawyers, Atenistang lawyer daw ang bagong head ng Sea World.

So the sign says, "Alleged Killer Whale."

It's my lolo's birthday on Saturday. Can I bring a "EAGLES, MAKE MY LOLO'S BIRTHDAY HAPPY!" banner to the game? biggrin.gif

Just a random thought!
