lets all pray for the lady eagles! hoep they make it!
ai!caramba!
I overheard the athletic director of Adamson speaking to Jun Capistrano after the Saturday loss. He told Jun Capistrano that he is planning to sell tickets for the 3rd game at P50.00. That means fans can get a patron seat for that amount.

Sounds fishy, I think that the Adamson guy is trying to make tickets affordable so that a lot of rowdy Adamson fans can get get near the playing area to cheer for their team. They had a hard time cheering at the Araneta Coliseum because most of them were located at the upper box sections.

I suggest that we all go to the game early so that we can get the best seats.

Breaks of the game in the end, nothing more and nothing less. We had a chance to take the crown home right then and there but it was a bad bounce away. Game 3 is ours! I think Tin Chua will lay 30 points and 20 boards on the Falcons.

One really important suggestion though: I think it would help the cause greatly if the team could have at least one 3-hour practice session at Makati Coliseum. There are plenty of dead spots and weird bounces off the rims and glass there. Ask any PBL player and they'll tell you its a pain in the ass unless you get to check it out.

I know the rims there are never set properly, sometimes they're too tight, sometimes they're too soft. Its nearly impossible getting a good shooter's bounce on those rims. I think they were made more to withstand slamdunking, since that seems to be all the rage in the PBL. That's bad news for shooters who need a feel for the rims and glass.

Players like AJ, Cassy, Aileen, Kat and Pipay should have no problems because they aren't dependent on friendly bounces to get their shots. Medium-range shooters like Tin, D-Cay, Caroline and Che need to get a little familiar with the nuances of the Makati or they'll grope for shots.

In any event, as long as the defense holds we should be able to win it all. We had a high 67 points in Game 1 and a low 46 in Game 2. I don't think the Adamson D was that good, so it was simply a bad shooting game for us, and that will sometimes happen even to the best of players. Merenciana Arayi hasn't been playing well for instance, and she's MVP. Gadian, Bombeo and Jaleco however have stepped up and produced.

Our transition D will be the ultimate key to success. If we can jam their transition attack like we have a good chance of beating the Lady Falcons, it was proven in Games 1 and 2. Kabado Adamson like hell, kaya dapat relentless, merciless, attack basketball tayo in Game 3.
Code Blue
Great effort from the Lady Eagles especially coming from 5 points down with around a minute to go.

One message for Tin Chua: Shake off Game 2... we need you badly in this winner-take-all game. You were primarily responsible for our comeback so don't worry too much about the eventual outcome.

I felt so bad seeing you with the towel over your head after the game. Ateneo's 6th man is, was, and will always be behind you so go for it in Game 3. While we have more celebrated players I feel you are the key as you do so much for the team. Just play your usual game and I guarantee we'll be singing the alma mater in victory!

And it comes down to this, the last game of the Season, winning time.

Since the Women's basketball season opened, in the sweltering Adamson Gym, many eyes have been opened, many minds have been changed.

Women's basketball has always had to take a backseat to the hype factory that is the Men's tournament, where all the TV coverage, major sponsors and throngs of fans go.

Unbeknownst to many, the Lady Eagles have quietly become THE premiere force of women's basketball in the country. Sorry, Adamson, but even with your championship record you wouldn't hold a candle to those "larong kikay" women wearing Mary's Blue and White.

How about your starting small forward coming off just a couple hours sleep in the Final 4 encounter against Lasalle to nail key treys for the pull-away victory?

How about a tough bench player nearly taking away the Round 1 game away from you on a tough undergoal layup?

How about the best woman power forward in the league coming within God's bounce to almost give Ateneo its first ever Women's basketball crown?

How about the unheralded recruit coming into her own as a one-woman fastbreak in Round 2?

How about the best damn team defense in the league wreaking havoc on what used to be surefire plays for other teams?

How about five straight rookies of the year?

How about the fact that each and every one of the Lady Eagles is also an A-1 student?

How about that lanky center who looks like she couldn't lift a Margarita pitcher off the table dumping double-doubles on opponents each and every game? Oh, did I mention the half-dozen or so shots she keeps returning to sender?

How about the diminutive starting point guard who could conduct ballhandling clinics singlehandedly?

How about the fact that win or lose Ateneo truly loves our Lady Eagles?

The euphoria of victory may be fleeting, but glory is forever. When you take to that court tomorrow Ladies, glory is yours for the taking. Sieze it!

Over the summer I saw one game, ONE, pitting the Lady Eagles against this Adamson squad. It was the FMC Finals at Beda Gym and we lost a heartbreaker by only two points after coming back from a double-digit deficit. I wasn't very impressed with our Ladies then, it seemed we still ahd quite a ways to go against the powerhouse teams, especially Adamson.

The their season began without the attendant fanfair of the Men's tournament, and they beat UST by 16, a most auspicious start to their campaign. They'd eventually go on to a 9-3 record, behind only Adamson's 11-1.

But something was different. There was no more swagger to Adamson's pose, no more cockiness in their game. Adamson's limited bench was exposed, unlike Ateneo's newfound flexibility and depth, often getting top quality minutes from up to 11 players. Teams were wondering how to matchup against the athleticism and hustle of Ateneo.

The dreaded Lasalle press had become just another geometry exercise for the Lady Eagles. The once soft center spot was now manned by the Triple Towers. The point guard position was in the hands of the flashiest sentinel in the league. And there were so many interchangeable parts coming off the bench it was impossible to tell who the 2,3 and 4 was at any given time. Power forwards were taking three-pointers, guards were posting up, opponents were running into all sorts of trouble on defense with quick darting hands and even quicker feet.

And now its the big dance, all the hard work goes into this one game, for the UAAP Season 67 Women's basketball championship. Only 40 minutes stand between Ateneo and its first ever women's basketball championship. Adamson is quaking in its San Marcelino boots.

I heard the same too.

And to think that they were going to classes and turning in their papers and staying up late.

Dean Rosales already told them that they would be given a little leeway in the submission of their papers but the girls just kept on going to class and doing their academic workload. They could not believe it until a memo was issued. Heck, even their teachers did not believe it. They all thought only the Men's Team had that kind of leeway.

Oh well, talk about heart . . . and mind.

Go Lady Eagles, ONE BIG FIGHT!

More often than not, there are no Blue Babble cheerleaders, there are no bass drums pounding in their entrance. There are no cheering galleries filled to the rafters, neither are there TV cameras prowling around.

Meet our unsung heroes: The Ateneo Lady Eagles.

They do wear the same blue and white jerseys, the same "Ateneo Basketball" warmers, and the same Ateneo varsity jackets. Some of them sport white headbands, and some have the floorburn marks as a testament to the kind of ball players they are, just like their male counterparts

//

It is Thursday, two days away from game three of the finals. The Lady Eagles took game one proving that they deserved to be in the finals. Then they lost to Adamson in game two, paving the way for the winner-take-all game that would occur in two days.

The time is 8:30 in the morning. As I alight from my car, the sound of short screeches fill the air - rubber shoes burning against the hardwood. This will be my first time to see women basketball players in practice. I am excited. I walk up to the Moro basketball court hauling my gear and am greeted by the sight of fourteen ladies burning their asses off in practice. I grab a monobloc chair and sit, thinking to myself "This will be fun."

The ladies are in a scrimmage against each other; offensive patterns are being perfected. Intensity is the operative term of the hour. There is little talk, only dribbling and shooting. There is an unseen connection between all of them, awesome.

One would expect women to play subdued basketball, but not them. They take the leather strong to the hoop. They rebound like Rich Alvarez, and they chase loose balls like insane maniacs.

I wasn't mindful of the thirty minutes that have gone by. Suddenly, Coach John comes up to me and says "Ikaw ba yung photographer?" And I quickly answer with "Yes sir."

"Hintayin lang natin sila." Coach says, pointing to the girls practicing their free-throws.

"Sure Coach, no prob." I reply.

I set my tripod up while the girls went and changed into their blue uniform. Later and as they are lined up in a group pose, I tell them jokingly that I am their photographer and that they will be in the cover of FHM. A handful of them giggle, but the prevailing mood is battle.

A couple of serious group shots were in order, yet I wanted something with angas. I gave them a scenario, their faces turned grim, and a couple of them threw closed fists in the air. Now we're talkin'.

Up next, it was time to be wacky, and so they were. I had them pose ala Marina at centrcourt, complete with feet up in the air. Now I began to see their feminine side, I joked.

After I had emptied a 512MB CF card on them, it was time to pack up. They were looking at the pics on my camera's tiny LCD display and you could see their smiles as they saw their pictures.

As I said goodye to Coach, he said "No, kain tayo." But I declined saying "Coach, may shoot pa ako." It was a surreal experience. Driving off, I told myself "Welcome to Ateneo Women's Basketball."

Pics coming soon.

Going 9-3 in a season where everyone predicted you'd be a barely .500 team...

Stamping your class on a league that puts a premium on physical play...

Erasing the "larong mayaman, larong kikay" tags off yourselves...

Pushing the defending champions to three games in the Finals...

Keeping up with the demands of an Ateneo education...

Graduating on time...

Coming back for one more push next year...

We will rise up, we will return, we will take the crown that has eluded us for far too long.

Congratulations to a well-fought Season 67 campaign Lady Eagles. You make all of us proud to be Ateneans.
