Well, not exactly. I recall it was a defensive rotation. The girl who went down was driving into the lane from the top of the key, tao siya ni Cassandra. Cassandra didn't get to her right away after a screen and an aborted UST pick-and-roll. Nag-reset ang UST ng offense nila. When the girl went for another drive Cassandra slid into her path looking to get a block but Cassandra was angled wrong so she wound up hipchecking the UST girl. Muhang alangan ang bagsak nung UST girl, she was literally writhing in pain and looked glassy-eyed and groggy when she was helped to her feet. The good thing was that she was able to walk on her own. But when she got to their bench she looked like she was having episodes of nausea and dizziness, she even threw up. Grabeng tumba 'yon.
I'm sure hindi sinadya ni Cassandra 'yun, she isn't the Gene Alabanza, Ryan Pamintuan or Wesley Gonzalez type na love na love makipagbangayan. Ang masaya niyan kung si Joe Lipa coach nila, "Eveyone is entitled to one HARD foul!"

Joe,
The seating alignment sa school bus was 3 people sat on the left side and 2 on the right side then they put the middle seat. Sardinas talaga. When Jimmy seats on the rights side, the second person is actually occupying part of the middle seat na. Good thing that I did not share a seat with Jimmy since my little brother shared the seat with me.
Pre, nakabawi si Jimmy. When we used to play him, todo sahod namin sa kanya when fighting for a rebound. Kaso , when he falls on us, kami ang nasasaktan. Sometimes, when we go for rebounds and we know we won't get it, we just make sure to swipe his arms or try to knock the ball away from him when he comes down with it. When he gets his rebounding position, talo talaga kami.

Horse, tanong lang. How come Jimmy and his brothers are all tall AND wide, but Cassy is long and skinny? Her mom isn't long and skinny, neither is the sister who watches the games. Although I had a math teacher in Grade 3, Ms. Katherine Tioseco who was exactly like Cassy, long and skinny. She was easily 6-feet tall, kasi mas matangkad pa siya sa mga Garde 7 na varsity players namin even in flats, and those guys were in the 5'9" or 5'10" range.

Joe,
I don't know the answer though a batchmate of mine told me that the younger sister of Jimmy was also tall and skinny when she attended school in Ateneo. I will not be surprise if your former math teacher is the younger sister of Jim. She would have graduated from Ateneo in the late 70's.
Now that you mention it, I do remember Jim having a younger brother riding the bus with him. Never saw the brother play sports, only Jim. Joke then was that Jimmy decided to come home after finding out that his batchmates became star players first in AHS and then ADMU. Dati, si Chito Narvasa and maybe Pons Valdez ang sinasanto ni Jimmy sa court. Then others like Maling Estrella, Poch Estella, Sandy Calangi, Boy Ramos and the Faylona twins, Ricky and Love also became stars.

All we know is that they lost by 6 points to the Adamson Falcons. We also heard that Tin Chua played great.
Don't worry, we still have the twice to beat advantage. Had we won against Adamson, we woul have to play an extra game just to determine who will be seeded first.

i had heard we had lost but had no details.
i know coach john and the girls will win their final four match - against la salle?
a friend and i try to watch the lady eagles from time to time, buy we usually just end up watching the first quarter before having to rush to the seniors game.
so we have the men's, women's and juniors in the final four. aside from the sbp and passarelle champions both against la salle. not bad for the season...

If the 5 spot of the lady eagles are manned by the 3 headed monsters, they could have had their own version among the point guards in Quimpo, Grajales and Suki de los Reyes. LaSalle also recruited her and coach Mon Jose was disappointed when they first learned she had decided to play for Ateneo. Ask your friend, DRey, for the complete story. Na homesick daw kaya bumalik sa Cebu.
My sources told me that Ateneo also tried to recruit Gloriani and Dimaporo. They just decided that they wanted to go to Taft. The lady eagles where more than happy to sign Barracoso, Herrera, and Grajales. Ang sabi ng isang writer for LaSalle, Ateneo won the recruiting battle in ladies basketball the past 2 years. Prior to last year, coach Flores signed Tioseco, Ngo and the top player of Zobel, Quimpo. I think there was another player signed but I can't remember her name right now. Sayang din the player from Miriam who has decided so far not to play for the lady eagles.

Cackler told me the game is this Saturday 11am at Adamson Gym. It'll be Ateneo vs Lasalle; we have the twice-to-beat protection.
Unless the Lady Archers go berserk from three-point land this game should be all over but the shouting. We have to watch that perimeter because that is what has kept Lasalle going in this tournament. Their fastbreak and their defense has come undone at times but they've been able to fall back on the shooting of Manosca, Alon-alon and even Galan throughout the season. I am very confident however that we can matchup with them so long as we keep controlling the boards the way we have against them so far. They have no solution for Cassandra and AJ in the middle. Aileen is still a one-woman fastbreak and we have toughness across the board with Tin, Pipay, D-Cay and Che. Give 'em hell Ladies!

I checked it out again and the game is at 9:30, Adamson Gym.
It will be La Salle-Ateneo all over again. As usual, the La Salle side will fill the gallery, bring their drums and their PEP Squad. On our part, we wil have three people cheering against their 300 hundred. La Salle will try to repeat what their Men's Team did to us. Our girls are good but things are stacked against us for this Saturday.
A couple of weeks ago, the games of La Salle were rescheduled because it was their exam week. This week and next is the exam week of our girls. Games will still be played as scheduled. Some of our girls, like Pipay Villanueva in the Adamson game, will come to play with only two hours sleep. The Lady Archers, on the other hand, will come from a three week sem break. Our girls will come tired and puyat but they will give it their all.
This is because, in the sports history of Ateneo Womens ball (definitely longer than 14 years), this is our first chance to be in the Finals. We beat La Salle on Saturday and the Lady Eagles, are in the Finals. That would be history in itself. Adamson is expected to beat UP for the other Finals slot. However, UP is a rough team and Adamson will have a hard time. If we beat the Lady Archers this Saturday, we will have a legitimate chance of beating Adamson in the Finals and becoming the Women's Champions for the first time in Ateneo history.
This Saturady's game is history in the making. Our girls will play with tired embattled bodies but with indomitable spirit. They badly need us to keep this spirit burning for the full four quarters.
We hope to see you there in this historic game.

History in the making, that's what our Ladies are guinning for: Ateneo's first ever UAAP Women's Basketball Championship against the defending champion and long-time nemesis the Adamson Lady Falcons.
Adamson will rely on Tess Gadian and Mercy Arayi to deliver for them, and truth be told these two are probably the best women ballers in the coutnry today, with good size, great athleticism and superb skills. They finished 1-2 in the MVP balloting for the Women, just to give you an idea of their quality as ballers.
Our Ladies however are the better TEAM. Not a single one of our players was even on the Women's Mythical 5, not for lack of talent but rather because of the balance of our team. While we have a standard rotation, any one of the Lady Eagles could get called off to play and be absolutely ready. Coach John Flores and his staff have done an amazing job this season, bringing out the best in what many so-called experts labeled as an underachieving team. We've got the size, athleticism and talent to go toe-to-toe with Adamson.
Game1 of the Women's Finals is tomorrow Thursday at 2pm at the Big Dome. Nood tayo mga katoto, and see history unfold before your eyes!

joescoundrel
Sep 29 2004, 12:40 PM
Sangre,
The great Cassandra was just a few points shy of being in the Top 5 in terms of statistical points. The Mythical 5 of the Women's Tournament featured the Top 5 statistical leaders i.e. Adamson's Arayi and Gadian, Lasalle's Prado, UP's Cruz and UST's Arcigal. Like I said, we have such a balanced team that even without a single topnotcher in any statistical category we are still in the Finals. If the MVP reckoning were done in Round 1 Cassy would've run away with it for sure with her double-double and 4 blocks averages, but with the slowed down grind of play-off ball deeper into the Season, individual stats naturally tended to go down.
This wasn't bad news for us at all because a lot of our other Ladies stepped up in Round 2 i.e. Aileen Grajales (idol ni Cackler), Caroline Tanchi (imagine a former ROY is the seventh or eight man off our bench!), AJ Barracoso (our fourth straight ROY), Cheryll "The Destroyer" Ngo, and Theresa Sy. There is no other team in the Ladies division with our depth. We have a Starting 5 and a SECOND 5!
Basta manood na lang kayo ng mga laro, I guarantee you'll love it!

Joe,
I believe the lady eagles have won the last 5 ROY in Erika Dy, Tin Chua, Caroline Tanchi, Cassy Tioseco and AJ Barracoso.
By the way, ang galing mong manghula at papalitan mo na si madame Auring or your threats worked.

You said that AJ will win when others like me expected AJ's Miriam teammate Fatima Tolentino to win the ROY. Mas babad si Tolentino and she piled up scoring points and rebounds all season long. I think AJ had a better average given the minutes she played and rocked with her block shots. Do you think AJ will now be more popular with the UP parents since she won the ROY?

Bwahahaha!
For the game against Adamson, Gadian and the guards of Adamson will physically pressure Quimpo all game long. Adamson can not allow the lady eagles to run up and down the court given Ateneo's height advantage or allow any of the 3 headed monsters to dominate the shaded area. Given that, I expect Grajales, Ngo and Tanchi to play a big role.
Good luck lady eagles.

bluestork:
Aillen GRAJALES (#12), our favorite Ilonga, made 11 points and 2 rebounds in 15 minutes of action, all in the second half.
She is fondly referred to as the one woman fastbreak because, literally, no one could keep up with her on the break.
Kudos, however, should also go to Tin Chua who kept on egging her teammates on. Tin played 34 minutes making 11 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Special mention will also go to Kat Quimpo who, lacking in sleep, still managed to topscore for the Team. Our twin towers also made their presence felt even with the bigger Adamson frontline. Both Cassy and AJ made 8 points and a total of 14 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Of course, the Coach deserves the most praise for coming up with a balanced team. While Adamson lorded it over the boards and practically all departments, the starting five of Adamson produced 57 points while their bench contributed only 7 points. On the other hand, the starting five of the Lady Eagles made 35 points while the bench made 32. Talk about balance not only in minutes played but also in points made. It was also a defensive gem for the Coach to shutdown Adamson's Arayi in the third quarter to pile up the lead and momentum that sustained the Lady Eagles in the fourth canto.
Better things are yet to come.

Congrats to the Lady Eagles!
They really played a superb game defeating the stronger Adamson team. The Adamson team had better players in almost all positions but our Lady Eagles were able to win through teamwork.
That Grajales (#12) is really good. Fearless and willing to take the big shot. I hope she comes up big this Saturday. Special mention to Carolyn Tanchi for her defense on Arayi ( the MVP ).
I would also like to thank the FEU crowd for cheering for us. They actually joined us in our "Go Ateneo" and "Get that Ball" cheer. Despite what happened in Game 1 with the fan-throwing incident, I would like to remember the FEU crowd which acted so graciously in last year's finals.

Congratulations Ladies! Girl Power!... hehe... reminded me of the Men's Team during their Championship Run!... hope the ending of the story will also be the same.

I would like to commend...
Tin Chua for her "Kayod Kalabaw" type of attitude! Your hustle kept us alive! Keep it up!... That's true heart!... Reminds me of Rich...without the butterfingers! (hehe, sorry Rich)
Carolyn Tanchi for her leadership and her Lioness Heart!... A girl version of Chris Tiu, Marco Benitez and Brother Paul. (But in my opinion, Carolyn has that extra something that makes her stand out from her male counterparts... i think its her Leadership and her Never-Say-Die-Attitude)
Aileen Grajales also for her fighting heart... She reminded me of Bajjie in the First Half... but come 2nd half... she's proven that she has a better shot selection and is a better finisher than Bajjie. hehe. (Sorry Bajjie)
Kat Quimpo and DCay for their shooting accuracy and court-presence (their such a thing?)... both of them can beat Ranier Sison in a Three-point shootout!... When they're in the zone... They're in the Zone!
Cheryll Ngo... for those precious baskets (FT and FG)... her efforts surely deserve recognition especially in close games like this one... a missed free throw or lay up could have lost it for us.
Cassy Tioseco for simply not forcing her shots even if she knows that she has to carry a part of the scoring load for the team... she has better shot selection over her male counterpart... Bugs Bugia.
And to AJ Barracoso... for filling in for Cassy, when the latter was in foul trouble... she played like she wasn't a rookie at all.
So on Saturday.... Continue to play for the love of the Game!...
PUSOOOO! IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!... sponsor naman natin sila e. hehe.

Champion na tayo bukas, we'll win it by a low of seven to a high of 14 points. Adamson just realized how mortal they are against a hard hustling team, kind of like Detroit's win over LA, the Shaq and Kobe tandem of Lady Falcons Merenciana Arayi and Mat Gadian tried to carry the fight themselves against the 40 minutes of hell ball of Coach John Flores.
But we must be alert for the adjustments the Falcons are sure to make. They won't be surprised with Aileen anymore and I'm sure the defenses will tighten up accordingly. Cassy was giving the Adamson frontline fits, more so AJ, with their tough rebounding and defense.
Adamson's Bombeo and Yanez however continue to be pains in the neck, as they hounded Katrina and D-Cay relentlessly. Too bad for them our starting backcourt wanted that win far more than they did. Adamson has realized its mortality and will definitely be playing much, much tougher in Game 2.
