Sidelight?
How about irate UP supporters getting in Coach Flores' face during a timeout when he approached the referees? Those guys were really getting down and dirty with their language, tunog squatter na nga e. Amazingly, after the game those same hecklers were scampering out of the Adamson Gym when they saw the Ateneo supporters hanging out outside as well. F---ing idiots. Hindi siguro ma-take hanggang ngayon na AJ Barracoso matriculated in Ateneo.
BTW, my bad on the sched, apparently the Lady Archers asked for a rescheduling of their matchup with the Lady Eagles due to their Finals; we are facing FEU instead this Thursday at 9:30am. Gee, figure that, Lasallite athletes who actually take their exams seriously. You GO Lady Archers!

Joe,
We are talking about the lady archers and not the green archers! Kita mo, they will play their game against Adamson on Thursday as scheduled regardless of the finals. Come to think of it, Franz knows that Adamson have a number of people facing disciplinary actions kaya tinuloy ang game.
As I posted in the other site, the father of one of the players from UP is an insider to the UP basketball program. JP Paz is responsible for the VAAS program in UPIS being the captain of the '70 team. He used to play for AGS before transfering to UPIS because the mother was a principal of the school. Mainit ang dugo sa mga Atenista because his classmates would give him a hard time when both teams would meet. Bulok nuon ang AHS team but mas bulok ang UPIS.

according to some Ateneo old timers watching the game, the guy who started the commotion is an Ateneo alum named Butch Marco, his daughter also plays for UP. The Paz guy who confronted the coach is the younger or older brother of JP Paz.

66-59 victory for the Lady Eagles over a flummoxed FEU!
After a first half that looked ready to turn into a Round 2 repeat for the Lady Tams, Caroline Tanchi and Cheryll "The Destroyer" Ngo put the clamps on Veloso, Faustino, Adriano and Madridanio (tama ba?) to pull our Ladies back into the game. Cassandra Tioseco scored the go-ahead basket on a nifty assist from Kat Quimpo and the Lady Eagles never looked back. Unlike the Round 1 game, our Ladies were nearly flawless from the freethrow line down the stretch.
Kudos to our other bench players for stepping up, especially Aileen Grajales for her fearless slashing and shooting and (forgot her first name) Sy for her rebounding and tough D. And to those who think converted 2-guards don't make good point guards, two words: DANICA CAYNAP.
And could Tin Chua please show the power forwards on the men's team what a "drop step" looks like and how to do it during games?
Kudos to Coach John Flores and his staff, whose own hard work seem to be overlooked with the hoopla in the Men's division.

Lady Eagles walloped the UE Amazons 65-48 behind the inspired play of our bench. After Cassandra had five or six straight totally uncontested baskets off drop steps she and the rest of the regulars rested most of the game. UE's Cabral must have scored something like 40 points, being the only real scoring option on their team. When all 4'9" of her grabbed a power rebound even Ateneo supporters oohed and aahed.

Akala ko payoff to stop bringing the banner or to stop coming to the games altogether because we're so rowdy. Bwar-har-har!
Seriously though, I didn't bring the banner with me during the UE game because I left it in the car and my mom used it that same morning.
Of course this was UE so banner or no banner the outcome was more or less secure.

Carrot,
The DLRT Pep couldn't believe I was outshouting the lot of them, literally tumatahimik.
Horse,
What can I say, some things are more importnat than work!
To the Rest of the Faithful,
It was a game of spurts. Lasalle took an opening of 7-0 to start the game then we tied it 18-all in the first Q. In the second we smacked them around 34-28. In the third Galan and alon-along went on a tear to give Lasalle the lead at 47-39. (We only scored five third Q points because of the Lasalle press) Then Caroline Tanchi went nuts and brought the team back practically on her own including the go-ahead trey with 1:53 to go. Kat Quimpo ran the offense in her usual superb manner, leading to that great finishing kick.
Aileen Grajales has become rather adept as a one-woman press break. Tin Chua has become the most underrated forward in the league. When are opponents ever going to figure out that these two now DEMAND DOUBLE TEAMS!?
D-Cay's game was stymied by fouls, two of which appeared to be exhale fouls, i.e. she exhaled in the direction of her defensive assignment so the ref whistled her for it.
Cheryll Ngo continues to be my Destroyer. She seems to be the only one on that team that approaches basketball as a distant cousin of rugby. It would have been priceless to ask Cruz and Que of Lasalle if they would send my Destroyer a card for the Holidays, har-har.
And please, could we watch a game one time? Seriously, all those drop steps and pivots we're wishing to see from an Ateneo player, we'll see them here. Tin Chua and AJ Barracoso will show us.
"Beat Ateneo!" daw sabi nung Pep nila. When will they ever learn ...

Is it true that the ladies have "twice-to-beat" advantage already?
joescoundrel
Sep 9 2004, 10:47 AM
Canmaker,
They need one more win just to be sure. I am not absolutely sure of the standings now although I am sure na two losses pa lang sila. Adamson still leads with only one loss. To be on the safe side of a twice-to-beat they need to win at least nine games.
cackler
Sep 9 2004, 11:37 AM
Joe/Can:
Twice-to-beat na with only two games to go for most teams. Adamson (1 loss) and Ateneo (2 loses) are too far ahead in the standings because FEU, La Salle and UP are crowded for the last finals spot with identical 5 loses each. We can actually lose our two remaining games against UST and Adamson and still retain the twice-to-beat advantage.
At the rate things stand, one of the three (FEU, DLSU, UP) will be knocked out and we have the luxury of losing to Adamson in our final elims game to choose who we want to exercise our twice-to-beat over.
If we win over Adamson, I am not sure if we still have to go on a playoff to determine who will be first in the seeding. This may well be a waste of energy. However, Coach John may want to keep the winning attitude.
On a side note, it looks like our very own Tin Chua, Cassy Tioseco, and AJ Barracoso have been invited to join the National Women's Basketball Team. Wow!

Miss D, Cackler and Joe,
Does any of you think that AJ will have a chance to win this years ROY? The way I see it, it is a 3 way fight between Cabral of UE, Tolentino of UP and AJ. The former 2 have the advantage of getting consistent minutes from the very start while AJ has to share the minutes at both 4-5. If Ateneo wins the championship, I am sure Barracoso could care less if she lost the ROY.
There is a three way tie for the last 2 final four seats. Honestly, who do you want to make the final 4 and who do you think will make it? My personal view is that it will be green against blue in the semi's and blue all over in the finals. Adamson and Ateneo are a rung ahead of the other teams and it is payback time against Adamson.
If I may paraphrase a post of Miss D in another fora concerning UP, I do not think the lady eagles will invite the lady maroons for afternoon tea any time soon and vice versa.

After scoring only 27 first half points our Lady Eagles walloped UST 73-63, remaining solidly in second place behind defending champion Adamson. Ateneo and Adamson now have the two twice-to-beat incentives in the Women's tournament.
FEU, UP and Lasalle are still in a tight contest to see who will join Ateneo and Adamson in the Final 4.
Aileen Grajales, apparently one of Mother Goose's fave girls, I believe topscored for us (didn't get the official stats). Pipay Villanueva, Tin Chua, Kat Quimpo and the great Cassandra Tioseco also had great games. If someone has the official statistical points count please post it here. I think Cassandra is in good position to get MVP this year.
Coach John Flores' emotional and inspiring halftime speech in the dugout apparently worked wonders for the Ladies as they practically conducted a layup drill to start the second half.
Cackler and I wish to express our most heartfelt gratitude to Mrs Alice Tioseco for inviting us to lunch. Kudos to Mrs Tanchi for her wonderful cooking ond overall gracious hospitality. And I'll be damned if Cassandra isn't really 6'1". 5'11" my fat arse! That young lady was in flipflops and her head looked ready to scrape the living room ceiling!
Speaking of the coaches, it was very nostalgic hearing about that All Glamor Philips team on Coach Joe Lipa in the PABL days of 1986. To those who remember them, glamor boys Dodong Postanes, Aris Franco, Epoy Jalmasco, Dennis Carbonilla and company were truly in a league of their own not just as ballers but for their matinee idol good looks. Thanks to the coaches for reminding me, it was quite a trip down memory lane.
BTW Cassandra took down one of the tough UST forwards (forgot the name) and that unfortunate young lady never returned to the game. Now THAT is the kind of tough I just love in a game! Keep it up young lady!

Joe,
I think the 3 headed monster of the lady eagles are all 6 footers with Tioseco being the tallest. I read their comments in Teamateneo where none wanted to be identified as six footers. Being a six foot Pinay was freaky to Macky Herrera.
So, Cassy inherited some of the angas of her dad, Jimmy. Good for her! Jimmy Tioseco was literally the biggest kid in AGS during our time. I do not know what the disposition of Gian Chiu but Jimmy did not back down from anybody. A couple of my batchmates tasted the Tioseco wrath in the rock gardens in grade school. Are his arms still short?

That gives you an idea of what alaska others yelled at him.
Jimmy does not know me but we were once busmates in school when they used to own a house on Quezon Blvd not far from Bohol Ave.. Nobody wanted to sit beside him because he literally occupied the whole seat. Bwahahaha. He would know my cousins very well, they were batchmates through high school. True blue and I were ahead of him in school.

Horse,
I think Cassandra is the only legit 6-footer among them. AJ and Macky actually look on the upside of 5'11" pero 'di pa naman legit na six feet tall.
Cassandra was probably as much surprised to see how much damage she did to that other girl as I was to see it all. Cackler and I were yelling at the coaches to take Cassandra out afterwards. Sabi ko "Sigurado gagantihan 'yan!" Man, that other girl was even throwing up at the side of the UST bench. THAT was one heck of a hit!
Another Cassandra anecdote: When she got whistled for a foul she went, "Aw ref! It was all ball!" The ref just kinda looked at her funny. Cackler and I had a ball with that one! Ingglisin ba naman daw si Manong Ref.
