Hey guys! The men's team looks like they're on their way to get the title back from FEU this year and the Juniors' naman are on track for their back to back title!

The women's team will be playing their first game on Sunday, 930 am vs UST at the Adamson Gym! Please support them on that day. At least with your prayers if you cant go all the way to Manila... or by posting your good lucks in this forum!

They will be going for their first title EVER this year. If we all ( the whole Ateneo community) support them, the trophy won't be so hard to reach! Plus... this means a shot for a very rare triple championship for basketball(the only school that has done this so far was UST in 1994 or '93. Im not sure)

Go Lady Eagles! smile.gif
gee
You can do it Lady Eagles. I'll try to watch this Sunday. And your game against Adamson(I watched your championship game in the FMC). It would really be nice to have a grand slam this season - mens, womens and juniors.

The lady eagles won their first game today against UST...75-59! Yahoo! Go Girls!!! biggrin.gif

After a shaky and error filled start that saw the Lady Tigers race to a 14 to 6 First Quarter lead, Coach Flores called for a time to make some adjustments.

The Lady Eagles then poured their defense to overtake the Lady Tigers and lead the half by fifteen points. UST tried to make a come back to within 6 in the third quarter but, the Lady Eagles went for the kill. Steal after steal and drive after drive, the Lady Eagles pushed the ball to take a commanding 20 point lead with three minutes to go.

Nothing could seem to go wrong as the shock troopers were sent in. Cathy Tan drilled a three and followed with a drive to send his teammates into a delighted frenzy. With pure killer instinct, the Lady Eagles closed the game at a score of 75 to 59.

We note the extended minutes given to Tioseco who seemed to draw inspiration from a banner in the upper gallery made and hung by a tall and good looking fan. AJ Barracoso also played side by side with Tioseco with the Twin Towers conspiring in rebounds and assists. Macky Herrera announced she was back with good offensive and defensive post plays. Villanueva showed she was not only a shooter but, a speedster as well. She was so fast she left her shoe as she drove strong for the lay-up for an And 1 opportunity. Kudos too for the tempo of Quimpo and the swining play of Caynap. Tanchi and Chua provided the hustle and the body to boot putting in the points with their decent free throws.

It seemed that the starters of the Team played so well that the whole team was able to play. Everybody contributed as Coach Flores shuffled the ladies to give able relief. At any given point in time, there were fresh legs for the Lady Eagles while, on the other hand, two Lady Tigresses fell down from cramps.

Watch out boys. The Ladies are here and they have so much spunk and heart that they are able to take command of a game and finish it with a ferocious instinct.

another bad start, but great recovery by the team. FANTASTIC GAME BY CASSY! that certain someone in the stands should bring that banner every game... wink.gif
SwEeTSiXtEeN
I heard they played 5(UST) on 4(ADMU) for about 50 secs and yet that stretch was where cathy tan scored 5 straight points! laugh.gif

Sa sobrang ingay daw ng crowd walang nakapansin na Ateneo fielded in 4 players lang at that time!

ONE BIG FIGHT!
joescoundrel
That banner has taken on the mythic proportions of Japheth Aguilar's miraculous appendix! blink.gif

So what was the stat line? I think the great Cassandra had 15 points and 10 boards to go with a couple of blocks. I didn't quite notice because there were unruly fans where the banner was hanging. wink.gif
miss d
cas had 16 pts and 11 rebounds biggrin.gif

chua had a double-double as well, 14 and 11. villanueva had 11 points, despite the flying shoe. laugh.gif

the infamous banner is here - ateneo posts twin victories against ust laugh.gif
joescoundrel
And now that we've settled down from the euphoria of our opening day victory, time for a few game notes:

1) Cassandra had a great stat line (streamer or not) but she still gets pinballed in the post. Gas and I talk a lot about big man (in this case big woman) moves, and I think he'd agree with me when I say Cass needs to use her hips and her butt more. Using the hips and the butt helps lower the center of gravity, thus helping keep position in the post better. Lisa Leslie is very successful with this even against bigger players like Lauren Jackson and Tina Thompson. Cassy missed some good looks primarily because she kept getting pinballed by smaller but stronger players like Salazar and Del Rosario. She really should take a page from AJ's book. Speaking of which...

2) AJ Barracoso has got to be the best damn post player in the UAAP now, even in the men's division. If she were as tall as Ken she'd be f---ing illegal! This young lady's OWNS that left box area, and she moves easily from box to box. And that jumpshot is sweeter than an angel's kiss. I am certain she will make Cassandra and Macky Herrera better players practising with them every day. Looking to continue the Ateneo tradition of Woman Rookie of the Year? Look no further.

3) Villanueva, Grajales, Quimpo and Caynap could form an exhibition team, especially Quimpo (Katrina ba first name niya?) She was flummoxing defenders with that behind-the-back dribble, something an Ateneo point guard hasn't done that often in a game since Jun Reyes was PG for the 87/88 championship team. If Chris Tiu had their moxie he'd make people go "Yeo-who ...?"

4) Biggest kudos of all to Chua who schooled the UST Tigresses in what being a real tiger off the boards is really all about. She must have had at least five offensive boards against bigger players. UST had no solution for her. And when she needed a blow, Caroline Tanchi comes in to keep the rebounding pressure on.

On the whole I'd say the Ladies need to work some more on their defense, too many lay-ups given up, especially in the first half. We had to play catch-up in the first quarter because we couldn't seem to solve the drive and draw plays of UST. If Cassandra hadn't gotten those point-blankers that 14-6 lead could've easily turned into double digits. The press works, so does the halfcourt trap, but there are some seams in that defense that are too easily exploited by athletic (or just plain brave) slashers. Our great freethrow shooting was also an asset, so kudos to the shooting coach.

Good as Ken Barracoso is, I remember seeing a comment by an insider to the Ateneo basketball program mention in a thread that he looks prettier next to sister AJ. tongue.gif If Ken had the same foundation as AJ, he will solve Ateneo's problem in the 4 spot.

AJ would not be illegal if she had the height of Ken and played the post. She probably would not be playing for Ateneo because she can easily be recruited by a division I school from the States. Remember former UConn star Abrasimova from Russia.

The ROY this year will be contested by Dimaporo of LaSalle and AJ. In the interview in Teamatenista.com, Macky Herrera deferred to AJ concerning the ROY. Sayang si Dimaporo, she could have been part of the lady eagles but since she plays the same spot as Quimpo, she will not get the playing time in Ateneo compared to LaSalle. I wonder if Dimaporo's decision to play for LaSalle was before or after she learned Saki de los Reyes from Cebu was going to play for Ateneo. Kaso, Saki decided to remain in Cebu.

Other teams are worried about the height advantage of Ateneo. LaSalle coach Mon Jose mentioned that their team has to go big to negate the manpower advantage of Ateneo with it's revolving twin tower set-up.

Go lady eagles.
true.blue
Do we use the same cheers in the women's competition? Or is it B-L-U-E, E-A-G-L-E, Blue Eagle, Blue Eagle, the Queen? wink.gif

What about calling them Blue Ea-girls? Sobra na. Tulog na.
SwEeTSiXtEeN
I don't think they use different cheers for the women's games tongue.gif but that's a good idea!Hehe! tongue.gif

AJ vs Dimaporo for rookie of the year? I think AJ has the advantage in that. Well, it boils down to consistency through-out the season so let's see... Kaya watch the games! This Sunday, DLSU vs. ADMU! Go Lady Eagles!

DLSU ADMU game on Sunday - where and what time?
BLUE HORSE
True.blue,

I guess I was not the only one who wondered if the Blue Eagle spelling cheer was used in the womens game and if there was any adjustments to it. Hindi yata magandang pakinggan ang "blue eagle queen". I can just see the other schools laughing and accusing our players as "binabae". The players of Ateneo can never be accuse of being "amazons" and I am not refering to the UE team. Heh heh heh ... . tongue.gif

Gee,

According to ubelt, the game is on Sunday, July 26, 2004 at 9:30 AM to be played in Adamson.

There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with a bunch of single guys getting up before noon on a Sunday just to catch a ball game, even if it is a women's league. But then again, its always fun coming from an all-nighter, groggy from sleepiness and booze, and having nothing but the standard 8-aspirin breakfast. If THAT doesn't put you in the right mood to cheer your guts out nothing on God's blue earth will. wink.gif Them Lady Archers are gonna be in for it...

But since it is a Sunday, you can continue your cheering when you get home:

Hey guys! The Lady Eagles beat the DLSU Lady Archers today in a game of character! 54-52 was the final count as Tin Chua scored on a basket off a good defensive play by the Lady Eagles... I think it was Stephanie Villanueva who got the steal for us!

Congrats Girls! Keep it up!
grlfrk
CONGRATS LADY EAGLES!!! GODSPEED PO!.. smile.gif
joescoundrel
We blew a 13-point 4th quarter lead and LaSalle even managed to lead 52-51 with 35 seconds in the game. Thank God for Tin Chua and Steph Villanueva who would not let us let that game slip away. Those two have cast iron cojones and they willed us to the win!

Cassandra Tioseco had 15 points, 13 boards and 5 blocks, her second straight double-double game. Keep it up young lady, you're making us all proud! Rookie of the Year last year, MVP this year? Hmm... smile.gif She was diving for looseballs, wrestling for possession and (gasp) sticking elbows off rebounds! I just loved the way LaSalle's Prado was swinging elbows and shoving Cassandra away all game. Pucha, ikaw ba naman supalpalin ng tatlong beses kung hindi ka mapikon, bwar-har-har!

Speaking of MVP, Kat Quimpo should be a "Game Girl" like the PBA's Game Boys. I'll never stop saying it: Not since Jun Reyes has an Ateneo point guard displayed that flashy ballhandling, court generalship, overall moxie and leadership. Ms. Quimpo, please take a bow.

If AJ Barracoso doesn't win Rookie of the Year - she held the middle when Cass cramped up - Chamique Holdsclaw must have been recruited by another team.

LaSalle's Dimaporo, Huelar and Galan were instrumental in bringing them back into the game with good D and opportunistic scoring off drives and slashes. If one or two of their in-and-out shots had gone in-and-in we might've lost by at least six.

Tougher D would help a lot though, especially in helping us keep a lead. Our defense was severely tested when LaSalle erased the double digit lead and Manosca sank a trey for that 52-51 lead. I noticed this is probably the fourth real game I've seen where the opposition was literally taking it into the gut of the defense, on drives, cuts and slashes. We can't let opponents have those opportunities, especially not the likes of Adamson and FEU; it'll be an Eagle slaughter.

And them guys with the Cassy banner were there again. wink.gif
miss d
it's gotta be the banner! wink.gif

yeah, we squandered another big lead, but the vets saved us in the last 30 secs. big round of applause for villanueva and chua *clap clap clap* biggrin.gif

yes i'm biased, but i really do believe that quimpo is the best damn point guard in the league! last year, the kid finished second to cassy in the ROY race, and - get this - finished second for the pg slot in the mythical 5. she lost to eventual mvp dorothy torres. so far though, her stats are down from last year. let's see if her scoring picks up. it was fun seeing her match up against aminah dimaporo. aminah and kat are good friends, and were even together the day before the game for a tv shoot. smile.gif

bye sila next week, so next game is on august 8 vs feu, 1130 araneta coliseum. i hope i see the banner somewhere in the big dome! biggrin.gif

After watching 2 1/2 victories(late ako sa juniors game because of the women's game biggrin.gif ) and a couple of the sweetest brewskies , let me share my observations.

For the seniors, I have no doubt in my heart that we will still attain our goals, they showed it today sans Magnum and Larry (my heart bleeds for Larry). Whatever Coach Sandy is telling those guys, keep it up, its be working.

The seniors and women's games were strikingly similar, both teams were losing important players in the crucial moments of the game but both team kept playing their hearts out and they both won despite the absence of some of their starters.

JoeS

Cassy is the main woman for the Lady Eagles in the paint, AJ Barracoso may have the sweetest moves but it is Cassy who brings in the blue collar attitude that wins games. Too much have been said about AJ but despite her natural talent, she still has to bring in the double-double games that Cassy has provided for the Lady Eagles in the last two games.

As for the defense, I felt that they defended well, there were moments in the second and third quarter were they were held scoreless, but the girls from Taft couldn't really break out because most of their shots were all distorted and twisted, not because of the twin towers but by the way our girls defended as a team. I noticed how they would double team all the penetrations and that really gave the Archers fits. The only glaring thing that I noticed in the game were the lapses in defense occured in the crucial moments.

The other thing is the consistency of how they break the press. there were times when they would break the DLSU press just by passing and sometimes by dribbling. Our girls just have to be careful next time.

Congrats to the Lady Eagles, you made us proud. Next time, please end the game early, I was about to leave the game when we were ahead by 11 but I had to stay when we squandered the lead. tongue.gif

Hay salamat! That means I have one weekend off to drink myself silly until daydreak! wink.gif

As for Kat Quimpo, she's just a SOPHOMORE!? blink.gif She took Ami Dimaporo to school all game long. Heck, she took the entire UST backcourt to school last time.

Lost in the glitz of the best big woman-little woman tandem in the UAAP (Kat and Cass; sounds like a Mafia hit team, or is it an Anime hit team, ah basta wink.gif ) is the outstanding play of the best combo-guard in the UAAP: D-Cay Caynap! Goodness gracious, when Kat Quimpo takes a breather this dynamo makes opposing coaches wince and moan; you could see it from where I was and that's quite a distance! Not to mention she can outwrestle opposing guards who try to take them out in a fullcourt press.

Caynap does what she's told, does what the coaches tell her to do, follows the gameplan and just plain wreaks havoc on opponents with drives, jumpers and great ball distribution. And to think she's a natural 2-guard. Hmm... dapat siguro mag-seminar sa kanya si Miggy Solitaria...

Hmmm. . . .

That banner better be present in all the games of the Lady Eagles. If you believe in luck, so too with the guys holding the banner. rolleyes.gif

The problem is, the big dome is . . . . simply . . . . BIG. You guys better make sure you get good seats so that the banner, and you, can still be noticed by the Lady Eagles!

Just don't make too much a fool of yourselves with your obvious fanboy antics. Tutal, napansin na kayo ni Cassy Tioseco. Pati 'yung Dad niya, pinapansin din kayo. unsure.gif

By the way, two jerks in the stands were giving Falcons forward RICHARD ALONZO big shout outs during the Ateneo-Lasalle game while Alonzo was watching from one of the dorm windows looking into the court. At first Alonzo just kind of waved and smiled sheepishly, until the two jerks pointed out it was the Lasalle Women's Team that was playing; the Falcons beat the DLRT men's team the day previous. THAT got a huge grin from the good Mr. Alonzo! biggrin.gif

Any game thoughts or scouting reports about the FEU Lady Tams? I know they beat LaSalle too, and also by two or three lang. I know they have their own quality frontline, with good size and skills, just don't know if they included any of the, ahem, other girls I saw practising in their R Papa gym over the summer. Most of the ones trying out were guards and forwards. Because if they did, Stephanie Villanueva, Tin Chua, D-Cay, Kat Quimpo and Cheryll Ngo have their work cut out for them.

There was one player they were trying out in the summer who looked about 5'6" but can handle almost as well as Kat, same agility and ambidexterity with the ball. Mas magaling na point guard si Kat pero grabe athletic abilities nung FEU try-out, dunno if she made their lineup though. Kaya ni Chua sa poste ito, medyo mahirap kung galing labas at ok ang drive, like a taller Huelar (the LaSalle girl).

I expect our frontline will more than hold their own though. Just watch out for those nakaw plays especially dump passes to lurking forwards sa baseline, diyan madalas naka-score ang kalaban (UST more so than Lasalle). And AJ and Macky, quit shoving Cassandra into blocking position into the middle when a slasher drives in all of a sudden for godsakes. Kaya natatawagan ng ticky-tack fouls ang sentro niyo e. If the perimeter defense got beaten huwag niyo ng habulin, bawian niyo na lang sa kabila, sa poste. Good help defense involves quick rotation, not from-behind catch-up grabbing and flailing. And if you must foul, chop down hard para walang and-1, simplehan niyo na nga lang para hindi flagrant or deliberate ang tawag. Chop with spread fingers while keeping the thumb tucked in, from the inside going outward (as if executing a snap salute like the Romans) and target the area between the base of the thumb and the pulse line, bandang ibaba ng wrist.

Speaking of tawag, our coaching staff and team management need to clear things up with the Zebras. Calls have been off the first two games. The UE coach said basically the same thing when I saw him in the UERM campus. Those fools in grey had at least a dozen highly suspect calls on Cassandra against Lasalle, against Kat and D-Cay against UST. We have to fix down what they are gonna call and what they will let go. Otherwise we'll be scrambling if any of our key players gets in foul trouble.
joescoundrel
And speaking of injuries!

I certainly hope our Ladies are getting regular physicals after games, whether or not they seem none the worse for wear. This whole Larry Fonacier episode is making me paranoid.

Miss D and I once had a PM exchange about training and such, and only then did I realize what kind of regimen our players go through. I thought that kind of physical abuse only happened in my beloved Air Force Flying School. With all that training one would think that bodies would be stronger and better able to handle the rigors of athletic competition.

However, the contrary seems to be happening. Magnum, Zach, Chris, Bugs and now Larry, weren't in major collisions, didn't figure in bad spills, and were bascially just doing their thing oncourt when a little slip here, a little slide there, and they get an ACL injury. So I'm thinking, maybe we're training a little TOO hard? After all, the human body can only take so many miles of running, so many pounds-per-square-inch pressure of jumping, so many pounds of lifting, and so many angles of twists and turns during drills and training. Exercise and fitness are one thing, but competitive athletic training is something else.

Maybe there isn't much left in the tank anymore after training? The body needs time to recover, to rest. And maybe our doctors and trainers should also do a comprehensive physical on our players.

Kaya nga ang suggestion ko, along with a strength and conditioning coach and a doctor, dapat may "Gulang Coach" din ang players. Ang hindi mo kaya sa lakas at bilis makukuha sa utakan, guaranteed. Mon Fernandez was skinny and got easily shoved about by bigger players like Abe King, Manny Victorino and Ricky Relosa. So how the heck did he wind up a 4-time PBA MVP? How did he get so many rebounds? Abet Guidaben was bigger, stronger and a better jumper, but Fernandez won twice as many MVPs as Guidaben. Kareem Abdul Jabbar was skinny as a reed but he's a 6-time NBA MVP. To think he reached strongmen like Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Daryl Dawkins, Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, Charles Barkely and Mark Eaton.

And the classic Ateneo example: Danny Francisco. How the hell a kid 6-foot-6 and only 175 lbs soaking wet could put the fear of God into strapping big men like Jerry Codinera, Benjie Paras, Guido Babilonia and Jack Tanuan is incredible, especially considering these guya outweighed him by at least 30 pounds.

The truth about an ACL injury is that it can happen when you least expect it. I read in some books that you can get it even while you are walking. The only prevention for this is to strengthen the muscles that support the ligaments that support the knee. Maybe that is why our athletes have rigorous and explosive activities to make their bodies stronger. Take plyometric exercises for example, it improves vertical leap, explosiveness and quickness, but you can just imagine what ti does to the knees.

a perfect exmple of the unpredictabilty of ACL injuries is the case of Catonjos, the guy who played for UST and Tanduay. The guy came early to practice, did some shoot arounds for warm ups. Cantonjos was picking up a basketball when he felt a pop in his knee, and that was it,ACL.

yup! That's right...that's why PTs refer to the ACL injury as "an accident"...it just happens...

Speaking of injuries...Danica Caynap is now nursing a sprained ankle. Let's all pray that she gets well in time for their game vs. FEU.
miss d
i'm sure she will be. she skipped today's tuneup game vs the rp team and luckily, the team doesn't have a game this week. there's enough time for her injury to heal. wink.gif

Miss D or any of the team watchers, does anyone know how the women's games turned out yesterday? I heard the Lady Archers upset a highly favored UP team from one of my Homeys, wala nga lang details. Who played well for the Archers and Lady maroons, scores, etc. Hindi ako nagagawi sa ibang sites at sumasakit ulo ko sa usapan nila. Paki-share na lang dito kung may balita.

DLSU Over UP, 58-55 ( I don't think UP is highly favored this year though - they were not part of many pre-season final 4 predictions)
UST over UE, 69-47
ADU over FEU, 58-48

Well, we blew a 16 point lead in the first half to lose in OT to the Lady Tams 63-55. First of, congratulations to the Lady Tams, who showed heart, resilience and poise down the stretch. We will surely meet again on our way to the Finals.

We led 29-10 at the half.

We then scored all of NINE points in the third, as FEU evened up 38-38.

Then we needed my new Ladies hero Danica Caynap to sink two pressure-packed free throws to send the game into OT at 46-all.

We allowed FEU to score 63 POINTS after only 19 in the first half!

While our defense held for the most part and our halfcourt game was executed good enough, it came down to free throws in the end. I think we flubbed somethng like seven or eight straight free throws while FEU sank something like 10 of 11 in the dying minute of OT. Shit happens, what can I say. That Number 12 girl of FEU was totally unconscious from the line.

I've a bone to pick with Coach Flores's decision to stick with Katrina, D-Cay, Pipay, Tin and Cassy from like midway in the fourth all the way to OT, with cameo apearances by AJ from time to time. That resulted in exhausted Lady Eagles, lalo si Katrina, who was practically handing the ball into the traps of FEU. Pipay and Tin couldn't quite find their stride in OT either, hingal na sila e. D-Cay and Cassy weren't involved enough in the offense in OT to make any difference, rather funny considering they were the ones who built up the big lead in the first half.

You lot better be at Adamson on Thursday because we will be in hostile territory and I'm in fighting mood.

i think the team needs to work on its ballhandling when it is pressed. we also had a big lead against la salle and we lost that lead.
and of course free throws win ball games!
the men's team is showing the way:
hard work, one game at a time, and heart, heart and heart...
