hi! just wanted to ask your opinion on the said matter...i am planning to buy a laptop nga kaya lang i don't really know what brand or model i should get...ive a friend who advised me to get a Centrino daw kasi it's better than pentium 4 daw. problem is, medyo mahal pa cya ngayon kasi bago palang...it also depends with the brand. there's a taiwanese (?) brand, ECS na mura lang. meron na cyang service center dito so, kung magkaroon man ng problem, mapapa-ayos na cya agad. pero syempre mas ok kung hindi mo cya kakailanganin ipaayos, dba?! mahal naman masyado ang ibm thinkpad, and apple mahirap gamitin kasi iba ung programs...

i am kinda confused now whether to focus on the brand of the laptop or the specs...ano ba medyo balanced na hindi super mahal?

i would really appreciate it if you could enlighten me regarding my dilemma! thanks in advance! laugh.gif

well, questions first:

are you a student? what will be the primary use of your laptop? what applications will you use?

what is your budget range? what is "super mahal" to you?

regarding centrino vs p4, centrino is basically a "powered down" version of the p4 that's lighter on the batteries, which is essential in a mobile device like a laptop. also, most centrinos come with a built-in wireless lan, which you can use with the loyola campus network. finally, centrinos generate less heat, which can be kinder to the other parts of your laptop thereby extending its useful life. all that in exchange for a higher price tag of course.

google is your friend in ur search for a good laptop, if you're not averse to reading. try typing "laptop buyer guide" as a search string. smile.gif

Acer is also a good brand. I've had mine for almost a year now and it's still in tip top shape. Acer also has a service center in Otis I think. wink.gif

Get a Mac. It won't "hang" all the stuff that you need come built-in with the system and it's just a joy to use. You may need a few days getting used to it but other than that, you'd be amazed at the intuition of this machine.

If you can't afford to get one then go for Toshiba laptops. I've had Toshiba laptops that are over 6 years old and I've never had to bring them to the repairman.

Don't get those ECS desknotes. They are really desktop computers disguised as laptops. If you notice, modern desktop cpu's are put into huge casings for space and to easily dissipate the heat buildup from using these systems. Imagine putting these same boards in a compressed package with nothing more than an extra fan for it. If you're planning on using one in a temperate area of the country (Baguio or Sagada), it's much too risky using pc's like these in a humid, tropical environment.

mac notebooks (iBook and PowerBook) are the coolest looking notebooks ever. they ooze with style. i just can't get used to the one-button mouse, being a long-time PC user.

i'm quite happy with my work-provided IBM Thinkpad. the trackpoint device is great.

get a mac. i want a PowerBook.. cool.gif sobrang cool ng design. and it's very, very fast!! kaso ang mahal!!!! sad.gif

ehehehe i'm just mac-fixated that I made my laptop look like a mac.. complete with the menu bar on top, an iTunes, and the scrolling icons that enlarge when you roll ur mouse over it wink.gif

i want a mac but can't afford.. buhay handouts, how did u made that scrolling effect? gusto ko nun mac effect..

anyway, asus notebooks are very nice.. one of the cheapest brands pro the best naman sa quality (the motherboard!).. ibm thinkpad is also nice (the brand!).. ecs are the worst (pinakamura nga pero sirain naman daw)..

^ I think I came across that prog already. If I'm remembering it right, it's called MobyDock.

It's called ObjectDock. tongue.gif
go to StarDock and you'll find pretty useful shell enhancements.. objectdock is freeware, but the other enhancements, you have to buy it. don't worry, may free version sila.

Want to own a Mac but all you have is a PeeCeee?  Just download the following and make your M$ Windoooooze 2000 or XPee look and feel like a Mac OS X.  Be warned that you will need at least a Pentium 4 or an Athlon XP and 256MB to make things tolerable. With XPee you can actually even change the logon and start-up screens to make it look like Mac OS X.

 Web sites:

Download:

Window Blinds - Download Mac OS X themes to make your Windows Explorer look like Finder.

Object Bar - Download Aqua Bar to make your taskbar look like Finder Menu bar.

Object Dock - Download Mac OS X icons to replicate your Mac OS X Dock.

Icon Packager - Download Mac OS X icons to change your icons.
