Gabby Lopez (ABS CBN Chairman and Owner) is not an alumnus of ateneo.
BerdengEbak
Gabby Lopez is a graduate of Ateneo grade school and high school. He went to Harvard for college. He's a diehard Atenean and supporter of the Blue Eagles. His kids are studying in the Ateneo as well.

hahhaahahaaa......

mr. gabby Lopez is not as smart as his lolo who was educated in UP Law. none of the gabby's uncle passed the UPCAT.

Gabby studied grade 2 in ateneo but continued his studies in the US. while he was there, he enrolled in an ordinary public high school. he graduated high school in the bottom of the whole class.

it is not also true that he studied in Harvard. his SAT scores didn't even reach one thousand. He is believed to have an i.q. of less than 70. He is only good for a third-tier Jesuit-run college. He applied to Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford and Pepperdine. (the balls!) But he was turned down to all the schools he applied to. he didn't bother to apply to any ivy-league uni because he already knew he doesn't stand a chance getting admitted. he first studied in a community college in California and eventually graduated from U of San Francisco. USF is actually a school for those who just want to have a diploma. i think you know what i mean by this.

how does anyone becomes an alumnus of ateneo?

KadiriPagMaroon,

I know it really hurts to be an Ateneo reject. I pity you and I understand how it must really hurt for you. Hope you get over it. There's still hope for you even if you didn't make the cut as an Atenean. Just keep praying and work hard. UP is not bad as a backup. Many of those who didn't make it in Ateneo end up in UP and still manage to succeed in life.... at least some of them. Hope you'll end up as one.

Peace.

Nakakatawa talaga kayo. HAHAHA!!! The small make believe world of the Ateneans. Kaya di umaasenso ang Pilipinas. If graduates of the most prestigious university of the country (iyan ha, papuri iyan sa inyo.. to show how objective I am) have a pathetic we-are-the-greatest-university-in-the-universe-mentality.

Grow up. See the world. USF (third tier Jesuit-run college ba kamo, KadiripagBlue?) is better known than the Ateneo de Manila outside the Philippines.

Apparently, it's Ateneo's turn.

At least LaSalle is consistent. After all, the DLSAA rules do not require a former La Salle student to graduate or earne a degree from La Salle to be eligible to join the DLSAA. Pero ang AAA, dapat daw grumaduate. Pero pag naging presidente, aankinin na ng mga Atenista. O kaya pag mayaman...

Mahirap talaga magmalinis!!!

your statement is a fallacy because you assume that better known means better. ateneans outnumber usf college grads in higher ranking graduate schools like harvard law and wharton business and in hiring into selective international companies like mckinsey & co. ateneans outnumber college grads from more obviously famous universities like michigan and notre dame even if it has a smaller population. i can't say the same for students in that school along the LRT tracks. baka kahit sa 1000th tier sister school tulad ng manhattan college at LS-phillie lampaso pa rin. hahaha!

Lopez III, Eugenio ( Gabby ) - GS'66, HS70. As found in the 2000 Ateneo Directory.

In the AAA By Laws - Two years of studying at the Ateneo is enough to be a member of the Ateneo Alumni Association. Whoever said that one must graduate to be an Ateneo alum is misinformed.

AAA Board Member, 1996- 2001.

Gabby Lopez is indeed from AHS.

Friends of mine from that era (late 60's, early 70's) remember Gabby Lopez as this "tisoy" kid walking around the AHS corridors. Then, it was a big deal to be "tisoy" and in AHS because most "tisoys" went to other schools like La Salle and San Beda. Ateneo then was the bastion of "los indios bravos." So, I don't know where the story about him graduating from the bottom of the class in some US public high school is coming from.

I have no knowledge about him flunking the UPCAT (Parenthetically, it must be asked whether there was an UPCAT already in 1970). In all probability, given the turbulence of the times (remember that the First Quarter Storm already took place in January 1970) and his family's strained relationship with Marcos, Gabby may have been shipped off to the US straight away and skipped college in Manila altogether. At any rate, this is all speculation. Back to the record.

After Ateneo, Gabby went on to Bowdoin College (that's pronounced as "Bow-d'n"). It's located in Brunswick, Maine and is a pretty good but small northeastern liberal arts college with a solid academic reputation. Bowdoin is one of those good schools in the US New England region that's not too well known back in Manila -- just like Amherst, Babson, Bentley, Smith, Brandeis and other small schools around the "Athens of America." So, it's not true that he graduated from USF, which is not a bad academic institution as insinuated. USF probably even has better library, laboratory, computing and academic resources than most Philippine universities. So, I'd be a little more careful about tagging it as a below par or substandard institution.

I don't know anything about his alleged SAT scores and will not pretend to know anything about that. All I can say is that, based on my own experience, these scores are confidential and are released only to the person taking the exam and the schools to whom he has authorized release. If there's public way of getting someone's SAT scores, I'd like to know.

After Bowdoin, he followed his grandfather's and father's footsteps and attended Harvard. He actually went to Harvard Business School where he got a post-graduate degree.

As for Gabby's grandfather, I suppose we are talking about Eugenio "Ening" Lopez, Sr., right? While it is true that he went to UP Law and then to Harvard, he also graduated from the Ateneo (either from the high school or with an A.A.).

Just setting the record straight.

Good to see somebody with an appreciation for those small holistically-oriented liberal arts colleges. Ateneo was like that not too long ago but has since taken the path of becoming a quasi-large university like BC and Georgetown while keeping some of its liberal arts roots. When I hear "liberal arts college" the one I remember most is Barnard where the Columbia boys try to pick up chicks. tongue.gif

It is not uncommon for very affluent Pinoy families to send their bright kids to study in these institutions where admission is very competitive. Cory Cojuanco Aquino attended Mount St. Vincent, Leticia Ramos-Shahani attended Wellesley and most recently, Cris Villonco of the Sigueon Reyna family enrolled in Sarah Lawrence.

Of course, one of the better-known prominent but small institutions is the College of the Holy Cross run by the Jesuit fathers.
BLUE HORSE
Rabbaddal,

Looking at the New England schools mentioned by Maverick, I also noticed the slight concerning Holy Cross. But once I saw the author of the next thread, I knew the correction would come from you. laugh.gif

About those liberal arts schools, I would not include Babson which is known more for their B school.

The Liberal Arts schools in the East were better known as the schools of the 7 sisters. Radcliffe used to be part of the group until it was absorbed by Harvard. The boys from Penn according to my former classmates who attended Wharton went hunting in Bryn Mawr.

Who did Cris Villonco marry among the Siguion Reyna boys? The eldest boy was Leonardo or Dody who attended UP for college and law. The younger brother is Carlos who studied film at NYU. Malas niya if he married my former classmate, Dody. Heh heh heh . tongue.gif

Blue Horse,

I included Babson in my enumeration of New England colleges that are not too well-known in Manila but did not mention that it is a liberal arts college. I agree that it is more of a business school just like Bentley, which I also included in my list of New England schools. I intentionally left out Holy Cross from that list since, from where I stand, it seems like a large enough institution. Anyway, if you think that's a small New England college, then I have no objection.

I don't know which Cris Villonco is being referred to here by Rabbaddal. My guess is that it's Cris Villonco the young entertainer who is the daughter of Opap Villonco, a partner with the Siquion-Reyna law firm. I hope that this particular Cris Villonco is still unmarried. biggrin.gif

Cheers!

BLUE HORSE,

Tama si Maverick about Cris Villonco. She's the entertainer and young daughter of Atty. Opap Villonco. And for the good news of the single guys out there, she's young and unmarried. biggrin.gif

They can catch her around Manhattan where she lives or by going upstate to posh Bronxville, NY (not the Bronx) where she is either a sophomore or junior college student at Sarah Lawrence College. Lapit lang yan. 20 mins away by Metro North from Manhattan.
Maverick
Hmmmm....Rabbadal, you wouldn't happen to have the Metro North timetable to Bronxville on you, would you? biggrin.gif
BLUE HORSE
Last I heard, Dodi Siguion Reyna was still single but he can't be involved with Cris Villonco. She is old enough to be his own daughter. Then again, that reason did not stop Dodi's uncle in the past. Heh heh heh. ohmy.gif You guys can call it the sickness that afflicts the male members of the Ponce Enrile clan. tongue.gif

Rabbaddal, malayo masyado ang Malibu. She lives in Manhattan and isn't that the same island where your office is located? All you need is a token for the subway but NYC subway does not have a frequent user plan! biggrin.gif

The girls of Bryn Mawr are something to behold, intellectually. Just like their Wellesley counterparts, everyone of them seems to be a captain of this and that club or team. I'm not sure if the Penn boys would like to go hunting over there only to become "under-d-saya" later on.

Barnard girls, on the other hand, tend to be more docile and less assertive. They work better as team players and don't insist on being the boss. That's why they make easy prey for the Columbia boys.

Anyway, just to add to the OT discussion, some of the better liberal arts colleges are outside of New England or even the US East Coast. Out west, there is a clump of outstanding liberal arts schools w/ in 2 miles of each other in the city of Claremont, located in the middle of the California desert - Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Scripps, Harvey Mudd and Pitzer. Scripps is an all-chick...este...female college. Because there is no large top-rank university nearby (the nearest being UCLA, USC, Loyola and Occidental - all of them 2+ hours away), there's not that much male competition for the Scripps girls.

Down south in Dixieland, there's the small Jesuit-run Spring Hill College near the Alabama coast.
