what were your favorite books as a child?
Do you still read children's books now?

When I was really really young, I was into Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. When I got a little older, I got into books by Gary Paulsen, Judy Blume, etc. Basta Newberry Winner, I'd read it. Some of my faves were Hatchet, The Jellyfish Season by Mary Downing Hahn and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson (I think).

Right now, I'm reading A Series of Unfortunate Events.

How about you? smile.gif

What book are you on in the Unfortunate Events series?

They can get kinda depressing, don't you think?

But don't say the author doesn't warn you in the beginning about it being depressing. LOL

I've just read til the 5th book, the Austere Academy. It's almost self-torture to continue on the next titles (and the books are kinda expensive don't you think?)

i found it cute when he was doing that in his first book, but when he continued that on his second, third, etc. i found it kinda dull! actually i think its a good way to fill up pages. he he.

reminds me of these "trashy" books like sweet valley, the author sometimes can take up a whole chapter introducing everybody again. . .blond hair, and blue green eyes.

sweet valley: good toilet reading!
beckham
Sweet Valley...haha good toilet reading. i had to repeat that.
The Series of Unfortunate Events are kinda expensive...but they're good reads. If i were an orphan below 10 and come across the book, i wouldnt be depressed. id think that the baudelaire kids have it tougher than i do hehe.

Can't stand the Series of Unfortunate Events. Too depressing. I only had to read the first one, then instant turn off.

Grew up reading Asterix Comics. Does that count? Though I did end up stuck in a quagmire of fantasy novels---Terry Brooks, David Eddings---for around 4 straight years!

Don't get me wrong, fantasy is still definitely my favorite genre...so my fave books are still the Harry Potter series, and authors like Terry Pratchett, and Tamora Pierce. Galing nila, intelligent fantasy for young (and older) people.

saggy baggy elephant.. smile.gif
harry potter
roald dahl books
sweet valley

i forgot...yung BABAR series din galing. hehe ya know...the elephant king... rolleyes.gif
goobydoo
there are other depressing children's stories or fairy tales... like the snow queen, the little mermaid and the little match girl... i think they're all by andersen or something... sa sobrang depressing, di na pambata. hehe smile.gif
miss d
Medyo expensive nga yung Unfortunate Events series... I've only finished until book 2. Still thinking if book 3 is worth buying. What do you guys think?

You're right, at first, it's pretty amusing - how he always defines the words ("which here means..."), how Snickett always reminds us to stop reading the book because it's depressing, etc. I think that's what got me so interested when I read the Bad Beginning. But I'm wondering how long the novelty is gonna last. At any rate, I don't think this is a children's book in the conventional sense. smile.gif

The Series of Unfortunate Events, for me, is not simply "one-of-the-Children's-books." like Harry Potter, the series has tons of symbolisms, parodies, satires and religious stuff. that's why they interest young and old alike.
i betcha havent figured out what's with Count Olaf's "eye". wink.gif AND, the eye comes back in book two...(spoiler! sorry for those who havent read yet)

dati memorize ko pa yung "green eggs and ham"! biggrin.gif heheh..
beckham
do you want to have some green eggs and ham?
i will not, could not, would not, have green eggs and ham.
not in a car, not in a train...hahahaha
now, if only i can have the same memory for my academics...hahaha biggrin.gif

it makes a quaint read. especially coz the text in the book are written in neat "young" script. even more quaint if read in Brunhoff's original French. wink.gif

I liked Babar growing up. Even the cartoon version, when the I Channel on Sky still existed.

Growing up, we had this little Babar book on how Babar discovers Santa Claus and how he brings the Santa tradition back to his kingdom. Super senti-type book, when you think about it.

I didn't like being teased about BEING Babar, though. Kamukha ko daw. Argh!

Wow... Bridge to Terabithia! I remember reading that when I was younger then looking for the book in my high school library and in the bookstores, but never finding it again! I don't remember the story much, but I remember really liking it!

The other children stories that I remember liking were The Island of the Blue Dolphin, and my tito's and tita's collection of Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Dana Girls, Robin Keane, etc., and I loved reading things about the unexplained mysteries! (UFO's, bermuda triangle, ghost ships, etc.)

I vaguely remember about the Adarna stories. I guess it was a childrens book. I used to read lots of fantasy books when I was a kid. smile.gif

Isang book na sobrang inkinatuwa ko dati e yung kay Curious George, yung matsing palaging napapasok sa gulo.... May complete set ako nun dati tas binenta ng nanay ko sa garage sale namin. Iyak na iyak ako nun.....
